1. To develop an understanding of the processes of change and development both in terms of time and space, through which human societies have evolved.

2. To make learners realise that the process of change is continuous and any event or phenomenon or issue cannot be viewed in isolation but in a wider context of time and space.

3. To help learners understand and cherish the values enshrined in the Indian Constitution and to prepare them for their roles and responsibilities as effective citizens of a Democratic society.

4. To facilitate the learners to understand and appreciate the diversity in the land and people of the country with its underlying unity.

5. To help the learners to understand our earth - its interior, environment and natural domains and to help them understand the internal and external forces those are changing our earth. Also, to help the learners to understand the nature of diverse flora and fauna, available on the earth.

6. To familiarize the learners with the factors that have contributes towards making today’s world a global society. Also, to educate them about the diverse cultures those have developed in various parts of the world as an outcome of interaction between human beings and their environment.

7. To help the learners to understand interrelationship of natural and human environment and develop sensitivity towards environment. .
