Jareds Essay

Due to Kafkas past with his own father, Kafkas story and theme were based off of what his younger life might have been. The story was heavily influenced by his past problems with acceptance. Because of his past experience with his father Kafka used metaphors, symbolism, and foreshadowing to skillfully maintain and show the main theme in his story The Metamorphosis.By using Metaphors, Kafka brought across evidence to show the theme or add meaning to the story. Near the end of the story, he added an unusual thing for his purposes their daughter got up first and stretched her young body This quote has a greater meaning to it that connects to the theme of acceptance, was she stretching because she was tired? Or maybe its because she finally got over her brothers death? The interpretation of the quote could go many ways, but points to the theme of acceptance all the same.Kafka also tends to use symbolism to bring across his point of view, and to further make the theme clear towards the reader. This quote But the very next one, literally forced its way into Gregors back This could symbolize Kafkas own relationship with his father, such as a fight or an argument, the apple could symbolize hate, due to its red color, and Gregors back could mean he was hated behind his own back, or maybe it means that he was backstabbed with hate, and that either way, it stuck to him, gnawing at his very body, he couldnt accept that his own father had done that act of violence. The next literary device Kafka uses to show the theme clearly is foreshadowing. In the very beginning, Kafka uses his choice of words to show what would happen later in the story, it was no dream, his room, a regular human room, only a little on the small size the fact that Kafka placed this in the beginning has a great meaning toward the story and how it will progress, since it said regular human, as if he werent human himself, like in the past tense, you can infer that he is either not human, or soon wont be, Thus foreshadowing the events to come.

The usage of Metaphor, symbolism, and foreshadowing and the examples chosen that was inside the story. Allows Kafka to skillfully show the true theme in the story The Metamorphosis.
