Recent inventions

A British company has invented a mobile lie detector it looks almost exactlylike a mobile phone, but it can immediately detect if a person is telling the truth or not!The police could use them soon to help catch criminals.

Tiger has started selling a robot dog. The cyberpet can walk, sit down and standup. It has got an intelligent sensor that can detect walls and borders and react to

different sounds. It has even got a voice-recognition system so it knows who is speaking.

For only twelve euros you can buy a mini-telescope. Its fifteen centimetres longso you can carry it in your pocket. It looks like a silver pen, but scientists have perfected

the lens so you can see a distance of up to eleven kilometres with absolute clarity.

Nature-lovers use the mini-telescopes to observe animals and birds in their natural

habitat.

Creative Laboratories have designed the ideal present for music lovers. Its a

digital sound reproducer. This small, portable machine can record about 100 hours ofmusic from your computer (thats about 150 CDs!). You can programme it to play the

songs in the order you choose. It costs around 510 euros.

Lacrosse

Lacrosse originated among the Iroquois Indians in America and Canada.

There are two teams with ten (male) or twelve (female) players. The players use sticks with a

net that can catch a ball. They try to score goals. Only the goalkeeper can touch the ball.

Lacrosse became Canadas national game

in 1867.

Football

Football is probably the worlds most popular sport. The modern game of football

originated in Britain in the nineteenth century. Professional football started in 1885.

In 1871 the Football Association in Britain introduced the FA Cup. It is the oldest

football competition in the world.

The first World Cup competition was in 1930. It takes place every four years.

Polo

Polo originated in Persia in ancient times.

The modern game of polo was popular in India in the nineteenth century and British

soldiers in India at that time learned to play it. When they returned home, they brought polo

with them. The first game in Britain was in 1869.

There are two teams of four people on horses. They try to hit a small ball into a goalwith a stick called a mallet.

How are you? I hope everythings OK. Ive had a terrible week. I started using the Internet a bit, as you

suggested. I found this great chatroom and I met this boy called Tom. Hes into computers and computer

games and he thinks that I am too. Now he wants me to send him a photo of myself by e-mail how do you

do that? It turns out he lives in Liverpool too and he wants to meet me at a cybercaf he knows. Andhe

thinks Im seventeen and Ive got blonde hair. I dont know what to do. You know that I dont know anything

about computers and Ive never played one of those games in my life! Im sure if I tell him the truth, hell be

furious or hell think Im really silly. If I send him my photo, hell find out that Im not blonde, but if I dont

send him my photo, he might think Im not interested.

Many people are envious of Jennifer Aniston some because shes got beautiful long, straight,

blonde hair, some because shes a successful actress and some because they like her husband,

Brad Pitt! She was born in 1969 and she became famous when she played the part of Rachel in the

TV series Friends. Jennifer is still acting in the series, although she decided that she wanted to

diversify her career and act in films. Rock Starhas, of course, been a huge success. Its a comedy

about rock music in the 1980s. It was great fun to make, although some of the scenes were verydifficult to do, especially the dance scenes, says Jennifer.

Apparently ennifer knew she was going

to marry Brad Pitt from the moment she

met him! She says they have been extremely happy since they got married in 2000 and she
