Influence of English language Proto English-These dialects had most of the typical

West Germanic features, including a significant amount of grammatical inflection.

Old English-Old English was first written using a runic script called the futhorc, but this was replaced by a version of the Latin alphabet introduced by Irish missionaries in the 9th century.

Middle English-Middle English is the form of English spoken roughly from the time of the Norman Conquest in 1066 until the end of the 15th century.

Modern English-The first authoritative and full featured English dictionary, the Dictionary of the English Language, was published by Samuel Johnson in 1755. To a high degree, the dictionary standardised both English spelling and word usage. Meanwhile, grammar texts by Lowth, Murray, Priestly, and others attempted to prescribe standard usage even further.

can not be denied and ignored since English is the most common language spoken everywhere. 4.Developments in English language :

Language is an essential tool for learning. Oral language development in English differs from

acquiring academic English, and involves using English within different contexts for different purposes.

As a result, you should foster children's learning and development through both direct and indirect teaching of language in a rich, stimulating environment.

Bases of English teaching : Teachers should: Encourage students to bring

their ideas, background knowledge, and experiences into class learning activities. Be responsive and accepting listeners when students are talking. Nurture an accepting, risk free environment where students will feel comfortable. Language is not practiced or acquired when students are afraid to use it. Allow students to express themselves without fear of censure – either by adults or by fellow students.

The general goals of English language arts across grades are: to develop students English language abilities as a function of their thinking abilities to promote personal and social development by extending students knowledge and use of the English language to encourage enjoyment of and proficiency in speaking, listening, reading, and writing in English.

5. Indian English :

Indian English is any of the forms of English characteristic of the Indian subcontinent.

English has slowly become one of the lingua fracas of the Indian subcontinent (including Pakistan, Bangladesh, Nepal, Sri Lanka), and is the language of their cultural and political elites, offering significant economic, political, and social advantage to fluent speakers.

English language public instruction began in India in the 1830s during the rule of the East India Company (India was then, and is today, one of the most linguistically diverse regions of the world[15]). In 1837, English replaced Persian as the official language of the Company. Lord Macaulay played a major role in introducing English and western concepts to education in India.

Though English is one of two official languages of the Union Government of India, only a few hundred thousand Indians have English as their first language. According to the 2005 India Human Development Survey, of the 41,554 surveyed households reported that 72 percent of men (29,918) did not speak any English, 28 percent (11,635) spoke at least some English, and 5 percent (2,077, roughly 17.9% of those who spoke at least some English) spoke fluent English.

Among women, the corresponding percentages were 83 percent (34,489) speaking no English, 17 percent (7,064) speaking at least some English, and 3 percent (1,246, roughly 17.6% of those who spoke at least some English) speaking English fluently.
