Sometimes a verb may be two words or compound. Get ready to find out what make up these two-word verbs and how they are used.

This module will teach you how to use two-word verbs in sentences.

- What do we call these words? o These words are called two-word verbs.

- How are these verbs formed?

A two-word verb is formed by putting together a simple or main verb and one or more number of participles, like prepositions. It looks like a phrase but as a phrase, it functions as one word. Therefore, it is taken as a single unit.

Here are some more two-word verbs and their meanings. Study them.

Put on means to wear. Put on your sweater. It’s getting cold.

Put off means to cancel or postpone. Father put off his trip to Zamboanga due to bad weather.

Get on means to board or ride in/on. Please get on the plane forty five minutes before take off.

Get off means to alight. To get to the airport, take a bus and get off at the town market. Take a jeepney straight to the airport entrance.

Look up means to give due respect; to find or search. I look up to my elder sister as my mother. Can you list down more of these two-word verbs? Find their meanings, too and use them in your own sentences.

Remember: A two-word verb is formed by putting together a simple or main verb and one or a number of participles, like prepositions. It looks like a phrase but it functions as one word. Therefore, it is taken as a single unit.
