Through the discussions, the proposed draft of the revision of the Declaration came to be clarified. We introduce here some discussion points relating to the proposed draft which was released for public consultation in April 2013, and which will be further discussed and hoped to be finally adopted in October 2013. The aim of the Conference was to gather opinions and inputs from experts and the expert community, particularly those in Asian countries. We hope that 2013 full-fledged revision of the Declaration is achieved before the commemoration of its 50 th anniversary in 2014. The main points discussed during the Conference and during the revision process were the issues of editorial re-construction; compensation for research-related harms; biobank; placebo-controlled trials; resource-poor settings and post-study access; and ethics committees. By collating these discussions, we hope to provide a succinct document for members of the research community in Japan and the world in order to have a better understanding of the 2013 revision of the Declaration and related background discussions. Abstract In this article, we report on the discussions at the World Medical Association’s (WMA) “Expert Conference on the Revision of the Declaration of Helsinki” hosted by the Japan Medical Association (JMA), and held at the Imperial Hotel Tokyo, Tokyo, Japan on February 28 and March 1, 2013. We hope that 2013 full-fledged revision of the Declaration is achieved before the commemoration of its 50th anniversary in 2014.
