THE PARTS OF SPEECH
Parts of speech are the fundamental building blocks of traditional grammar.
There are eight parts of speech :1. Noun
2. Pronoun3. Adjective
4. Verb5. Adverb
6. Preposition7. Conjunction8. interjection

WHAT IS A NOUN ?
The words which name persons, places, things, creatures and ideas.
Examples : Salina is a teacher. I have table and several chairs.. we would like to visit Cameron
Highlands Christmas Day is an annual holiday celebrated on December 25 3
TYPES OF NOUNS Nouns which name specific people or places
are Proper nouns. Nouns which name ordinary persons and
things are Common nouns. Nouns which name intangible(untouchable)
things is Abstract nouns Nouns which are countable are Countable
nouns Nouns which are uncountable are Uncountable
nouns Nouns which refer to groups are Collective
nouns Nouns which refer to masculine and feminine
terms are Noun gender

PROPER NOUNS
They always begin with capital letters like Cameron Highlands
Many of them consist of more than one word like Queen Mary
They may refer to the days in week, months and festivals like February or Tuesday

COMMON NOUNS
Like have you all received a copy of the agenda ?
Or all classes are coed and are taught by both male and female teachers.

ABSTRACT NOUNS
Like when inflation rises, so do bankruptcies.
Or I cant thank you enough for your kindness.
You can form abstract nouns from many words like

COUNTABLE AND UNCOUNTABLE NOUNS
Like there were two men and three women in each of the cars.

COLLECTIVE NOUNS
Like The village hall is maintained by an army of volunteers.
Or There are always gangs of kids hanging around the shopping mall.

NOUN GENDER
Masculine gender like : I could hear a dog barking. A cock crowed as morning approached. Jack Nicholson is my favorite actor.
Feminine gender like : The hens nested in a fridge Meryl Streep has won 2 Oscars as the
best actress in two different movies.

HOW TO MAKE PLURAL NOUNS ?
By adding –s to the singular nouns. (like roofs)
By adding -es to the singular nouns (like buses)
By adding –ies to the singular nouns (like cities)
By adding –ves to the singular nouns (like wives)

POSSESSIVE NOUNS
The possessive case is formed by adding –’s to nouns which do not end with an –s, as in
the following examples :The sky’s color is changing
The possessive case can also be formed by adding an –s’ to nouns which end with an –s,
as in the following examples.The babies’ nursery had twelve beds.
