Facts about EnglandGreat Britain is the official name given to the two kingdoms of England and Scotland, and the principality of Wales. It is an island lying off the western coast of Europe, comprising the

main territory of the United Kingdom

1

2England - The capital is London.

Scotland - The capital is Edinburgh . Wales - The capital is Cardiff.

3Great Britain is made up of Scotland, England and Wales, where as Britain

is just England and Wales. The name Britain goes back to Roman times when they called England and Wales "Britannia" (or "Britannia Major", to distinguished from "Britannia Minor", ie Brittany in France). The Roman

province of Britannia only covered the areas of modern England and Wales. The area of modern Scotland was never finally conquered.

However, it is important to note here that Britain has not existed in the true sense since the Roman times. Wales became a separate country in its own right, and then became a principality of England, which it still is today. The

Union in 1707 joined Scotland and England and Wales to create Great britain

Big ben

Big Ben is the nickname for the great bell of the clock at the north end of the Palace of Westminster in London, and often

extended to refer to the clock and the clock tower. The tower is now officially called the Elizabeth Tower, after being renamed in 2012 (from "Clock Tower") to celebrate the Diamond Jubilee of Elizabeth II. The tower holds the largest four-faced chiming clock in the world and is the third-tallest free-standing clock tower. The tower was completed in 1858 and had its 150th

anniversary on 31 May 2009,during which celebratory events took place. The tower has become one of the most prominent

symbols of the United Kingdom and is often in the establishing shot of films set in London.
