Exporting Figures from Matlab• It’s a good idea to export images
as vector graphics (e.g. *.pdf):
ü Plots can be scaled without loss of quality
ü Plots can be edited later in a vector graphics editor (Inkscape [freeware]), Illustrator [payware])
ü Keeps file size low
19. September 2019 Rehabilitation Engineering Laboratory | ETH Zurich
Exporting figures from Matlab1) Adjust Font Size:
File à Export Setup
• Under Fonts, enter fixed font size (12-14 pt)
• Click Apply to Figure, then click OK
2) Export Plot: File à Save As or click Export in setup window
• Select file format: PDF
• Name the figure and save it
19. September 2019 Rehabilitation Engineering Laboratory | ETH Zurich
Adjust PDF paper size
1) In Export Setup, input size of the output you want,
e.g. Width: 15 cm, Height: 12 cm. Then click Apply to Figure.
2) Don't close Export Setup window.
Go to File à Print Preview, input same size in the Width and Height options of the paper size à Refresh
3) Click Close in Print Preview window. Go back to the Export Setup window,
click Export, then select PDF format and save it.
Side note to Mac users:
optional export as *.eps, then open in Preview and save as *.pdf
(but you can also save directly to .pdf)
19. September 2019 Rehabilitation Engineering Laboratory | ETH Zurich
… or simply use an export script
• Get current figure size
Quick test:
To save the current Matlab figure as plotXYZ.pdf, type:
figure2pdf(‘plotXYZ’)
Hint: make sure the function path is added in Matlab first!
• Adjust paper size to current figure size
• Export current figure as PDF file

Import Bibliography in LaTeX Report• Save file from BibDesk or JabRef as BibTeX file
(e.g. myreferences.bib).
• The exported bibliography can be included in the report with the command:
\bibliography{myreferences}
• Compile the BibTeX file first, then compile the LaTeX file twice.
• References will appear in the bibliography as soon as they are cited in the report.
• All BibTex items can be listed in the report’s bibliography
(even if they are not cited) by placing the \nocite{ref} command.
