LESSON Significant Changes to the 2012 NC Fire Code DOMAIN: COGNITIVE
LEVEL OF LEARNING: KNOWLEDGE, COMPREHENSION
MATERIALS: Overhead projector or laptop computer and multimedia projector; projection screen; North Carolina Administrative Code and Policies 2009 Edition, North Carolina Fire Code 2009 Edition, North Carolina Fire Code 2012 Edition, Significant Changes to the 2012 NC Fire Code Full Power Point Presentation.
MOTIVATION: To educate Code Enforcement Officials on the changes to the 2012 NC Fire Code, as well as provide Continuing Education.
TARGET: Certified North Carolina Code Enforcement Officials, Fire Level I, II or II.
Goal: This class is designed to introduce certified NC fire inspectors to the significant code changes found in the 2012 NC State Fire Code. This Lesson Plan is representative of six hours of continuing education.
SUMMARY: This presentation addresses the significant code changes from the 2006 IFC to the 2009 IFC including North Carolina Amendments. The 2012 NC Fire Code is based on the 2009 IFC. Not all changes are reflected; only those considered significant to a majority of code enforcement officials.

2. Discuss the significant changes to Administration Chapter of the 2012 NC State Fire Code.a. Slide 5: The fire code is applicable to streets and fire
flow requirements in one and two family subdivisions that were established after Jan. 1. 2002. Unless alternate methods and materials are provided for, minimum street widths are 20 feet. Appendices B, C, and D if adopted locally provide additional regulations.
b. Slide 12: For years Class IIIB liquids were not regulated by the fire code. The influx of bio diesel technology has necessitated that Class IIIB liquids be regulated.
c. Slide 30: While the fire code has specific requirements for inspections, the inspection requirements found in Section 107 of the Administrative Code and Policies are also applicable.
d. Slide 34: There are specific general statutes and electrical code requirements that address the disconnection of electric utilities. The electrical inspector should be consulted with and included in the process to disconnect electric utilities.

outpatient surgical procedures after the adoption of the 2012 NC Fire Code would have to comply with these regulations.
b. Slide 38: Cooperative Innovative High School programs include early college and middle college programs. A traditional high school located on a community college campus would still be considered a Group E occupancy.
c. Slide 44: In order to apply the temporary overflow shelter provisions of the code, there has to be a permanent homeless shelter located in the jurisdiction.
