The Learning FrameworkThe Engineering Career and CapabilityFramework has been developed to offerindustry f lexible delivery modes toenhance skills and knowledge, and theability to implement these in the workplace.

This framework moves away from thetraditional academic taught deliverymodel. Students and their employershave the opportunity to define their ownlearning path within their own businesscontext and environment.

By developing this framework in con-junction with industry and the profes-sional governing bodies we can be sureit enables both businesses and studentsto achieve professional recognition tosupport their development and longterm goals.

The framework concentrates on gradu-ate level learning and developmentthrough provision of post graduate activ-ities and awards.

Science and technology evolve atremarkable speed, and today’s technicalprofessionals need to stay well aheadof the curve. Perhaps you need to gainexpert ise in an emerging f ield l ikemachine vision. Maybe you need tobuild a foundation to take on new chal-lenges in engineering management.Possibly your company needs to evalu-ate current energy alternatives or toadopt Lean practices to optimize yourmanufacturing efficiency. How do youplan to meet these needs? By enrollingin a flexible professional degree deliv-ered in a format to fit your need andthose of your employer.

These Advanced Study Programmesprovide the framework that allows partic-ipants to access the best knowledge ofour time, with the flexibility to createcustom curricula from a spectrum of dis-ciplines or within one core area, to meetindividual or company objectives. A Flexible Learning Framework leading torecognised professional statusFlexible work-based Masters degree programmes provide a new opportunityto learn while earning, making IEng or CEng status achievable for all practis-ing engineers.

These individually programmes tailored to individual requirements integratelearning in the workplace with supervised work-based professional develop-ment.

Experience has shown that work related projects under focussed academicsupervision have a very high completion rate, with major benefits to bothemployees and employers.

Employer Benefits- A flexible and cost effective way of meeting company and employee aspira-tions, without losing engineers from the workplace- A structured learning programme tailored to the needs of the employer.- Results in an increased number of in-company professional qualified engi-neers- Relationship with a university and the potential for knowledge exchangeand collaboration- Well qualified professional engineers provide a significant commercialadvantage. Increasingly, tendering or post tender contract compliancerequires key members of the project to be professional qualified.

Employee Benefits- A workplace pathway to achieving acedemic qualifications, leading to Incor-porated or Chartered status.- Learning and the development of professional competence linked to work-place activities- ‘Learning whilst earning; means no loss of income.- Support and mentoring- Better promotion prospects- Increased job satisfaction

Benefits of IEng or CEng- Internationally recognised qualifications- Enhanced professional status and recognition- Improved career prospects- Greater influence within their organisation and industry- The use of the post-nominals IEng or CEng

Engineers enrolling on the programme agree a ‘learning contract’ with an academicsupervisor and their employer. This sets out an individual programme of learning,as well as development of professional competence. Based around the engineer’swork, it therefore meets the needs of the employer as well.

Industrial Support and Mentoring

Where learning and assessment is to be based around activities in the workplace itis expected that the employer will appoint a mentor to supervise and support thestudent in the workplace. The mentor will also witness the students work and assuch will be involved in the assessment process.

Industrial ProjectA significant part of the MSc is the completion of an industrial based project(nominally 600 hours of work). The project will integrate the taught material anddevelop your ability to engage in an in-depth study of a substantial technical ormanagement problem, relevant to you organisation.

The industrial project is a particularly attractive feature for employers as it providesthe opportunity to deal with a real issue or problem in a very cost effective way. Theproject will have both an industrial and an academic supervisor appointed. On com-pletion of the project, you will be required to attend a viva voice examination whichwill allow you to share your research within your company.

Prepared for Professional ReviewSuccessful completion of the programme results in the award of a Masters degree, while the structured programme means that each individual is well supported inpreparation for the professional review for IEng or CEng qualification. The learningcontract can be tailored to incorporate the requirements of UK Standard for Profes-sional Engineering Competence (UK-SPEC) and and additional requirements ofthe elected institute or accrediting body and/or employer can also be incorporated.

Bespoke Training Pack

The MSc frame work is able to provide abespoke training package to providetraining to meet specific needs of boththe student and employer organisations. This can be anything from short coursesto accredited awards. The training isboth tailor made and flexible with theopportunity for both in-house and dis-tance learning delivery, depending onspecific needs.

In house training is often a a more costeffective option for organisations want-ing to put a group of employees on thesame module.

Current examples of this include deliv-ery of Avionic Systems and Aircraft Sys-tems Technology training to both BAESystems and Airbus UK. We run suc-cessful academically accredited pro-gramme for Rolls-Royce graduate train-ees, with over 60 students enrolled.

Each module can be taken as a stand-alone short course or as part of a qualifi-cation’.

The advantage to the company is thaton site training is usually more costeffective than sending employees awayfor training.

Networking OpportunitiesThe various MSc awards in the frame-work are built from a selection of mod-ules shared across the framework givingstudents the opportunity to network witha mix of students across internationalboundaries and industry sectors.

Professional Accreditation

The MSc in Aerospace is accredited bythe Aeronautical Society and the Insti-tute of Mechanical Engineers. We arecurrently working with the EngineeringCounci l , I Mech E, IET and otheraccreditation bodies to gain approval forthe Professional Engineering MSc andthe Engineering Management MSC.Successful completion of an MSc willcontribute to the academic requirementsfor a Chartered Engineer.

These courses will develop your profes-sional capabilities as an engineer ormanager within the context of your orga-niisation. They also seek to enhanceyour business and technical awareness, helping prepare you for key functionswithin industry.

Paul MorrellMSc Student, Airbus UKI chose the MSc Aerospace Programmebecause the part time and modularnature of the course means I am able totailor my studies to both my personaland company needs. The time requiredto complete the modules is also, for themost part, able to be squeezed into myother commitments. The course has been beneficial to my career in that it has developed a betterunderstanding of the business, my role within it and how I interact with other col-leagues. I now feel more capable of supporting the business as it evolves within themarket place. I have a better understanding of the way the company functions and itslong-term goals. I feel I am more able to support these goal, by tailoring my personalobjectives with the targets of the company.

The mix of taught activities and project work is usually very good, with the taught activ-ities being suitably planned and delivered to provide the tools to then complete theproject work.
