Choose a heading for each paragraph and write the letters on the lines. There are more headings than you will need. There is an example at the beginning.

The British Monarchy

2.0 ___J A Historical HeritageThe United Kingdom has a long history of being ruled by a monarchy; there has been a King or Queen on the throne in England since the 9th century. Today, the Royal Family is an iconic part of British life, and the monarch still plays an important role as head of state, with responsibility for appointing the Prime Minister as well as taking part in many ceremonial duties. The current monarch is Queen Elizabeth II.

2.1 ___Queen Elizabeth II was born Princess Elizabeth Alexandra Mary on April 21nd 1926, in London, England. Elizabeth got to enjoy the first decade of her life with all the advantages of being a royal, without the pressures of being next in line to the throne. Elizabeth and her younger sister Margaret were educated at home by tutors. Academic courses included French, mathematics and history, but they also had dancing, singing and art lessons.

2.2 ___Elizabeth’s life and position changed dramatically in 1936 when her uncle, George V died. Another uncle, Edward, became king, but he was in love with American divorcée Wallis Simpson and had to choose between the Crown and his heart. In the end, Edward chose Wallis Simpson and Elizabeth’s father became King George VI. Elizabeth became next in line.

2.3 ___With the outbreak of World War II in 1939, Elizabeth moved to Windsor Castle, just outside London. From there she made the first of her famous wartime radio broadcasts. In one particular broadcast, the 14-year-old princess, showing her calm and firm personality, told other children who had lost their homes and families, ”that in the end, all will be well; for God will care for us and give us victory and peace.”

2.4 ___At the age of 21, Elizabeth and Philip, son of Prince Andrew of Greece, were married. The couple soon became parents to an heir. Their son, Charles, was born the following year and daughter, Anne, in 1950. Elizabeth’s father, King George VI died in 1952 whilst she was in Africa. Elizabeth rushed home from Kenya and her official coronation took place on June 2nd, 1953, in Westminster Abbey. For the first time ever, the ceremony was broadcast on television, allowing people from across the globe to witness the pomp and spectacle of the event.

2.5 ___When Elizabeth became Queen, Britain still had a substantial empire, with more than 79 overseas territories. However, during the 1950s and 1960s, many of these countries achieved independence and the British Empire evolved into the Commonwealth of Nations. In 2015, Britain had only 14 overseas territories left. Outside of Britain’s land in the Antarctic, the largest remaining British overseas territory is the Falkland Islands. At 4,700 square miles, the islands are a little smaller than Connecticut.

2.6 ___There’s no doubt that the year 1992 was a particularly unpleasant one for Elizabeth and the British Royal Family, as a series of separations, divorces and scandals concerning members of her close family were made public throughout the year. It ended with a fire that destroyed historic sections of Windsor Castle. This led to Elizabeth declaring in a speech that the year had been her “annus horribilis”.

2.7 ___Despite the occasional call to step aside for Prince Charles, Elizabeth has remained steadfastly on the throne. Some of her duties have been passed on to her eldest son, but she still maintains a busy schedule. On February 6th, 2017, the Queen celebrated 65 years on the throne, more than any other British king or queen before her. In London, there were royal gun salutes at Green Park and at the Tower of London to mark the occasion. The Royal Mint also issued eight new commemorative coins in honour of the Queen’s Sapphire Jubilee.

Football World Cup Fever

Every time you turn on the TV, surf the net or check your Facebook, Instagram or Twitter account this summer, you will be confronted by the prospect of a worldwide sporting event: The 21st FIFA World Cup. 3.0 ___A Thirty-two teams are taking part, playing a total of sixty-four matches at twelve venues in eleven Russian cities.

A survey conducted in North America, before the 2010 World Cup, shows just how intense the most extreme football fans can be. Of the 20,000 people who replied, 51 percent stated that they would happily starve themselves for a week to see their team win it all; 40 percent of the respondents would give up dating for a World Cup victory; 3.1 .; 4 percent would give up a body part. Among European nations, these numbers were even more amazing. 3.2

And that’s just the supporters. In some countries, governments have been known to punish national teams that have not performed well. 3.3 Following their 2010 World Cup embarrassment in South Africa, the team was called to an auditorium at the Working People’s Culture Palace, forced onstage, and humiliated for six hours for their poor performance. 3.4

However, there are other storm clouds gathering over the tournament which are of a more political nature. A border conflict with neighbouring Ukraine has led to the West imposing sanctions that have hit the Russian ruble. 3.5 And a weak currency has an effect on trade and employment. Despite these difficulties, work on constructing facilities to host the World Cup is continuing.

But what about those of you who refuse point blank to be sucked into this storm of World Cup fever? There is a whole range of things you can do to take part, but at a respectable distance. 3.6 Cook a dish that comes from the country that is playing: fajitas for Mexico, moussaka for Greece, tapas for Spain and so on. Don’t be disappointed, though, if the screen and not your food takes centre stage!

Down the Rabbit Hole

1 In a farmer’s field in Shropshire, England, a photographer recently made an astonishing discovery. By crawling on his hands and knees down something that, from the surface, looked like

5 a large rabbit hole, Phil Swan unearthed a fantastic network of caves and tunnels apparently constructed by a secret order over 700 years ago. The incredible cave network was hidden less than a metre beneath the field, not far from a busy main road. Mr Swan

10 admitted that he had been searching for the caves, but hadn’t expected to find them at the end of a rabbit hole!

Considering how long the caves have been there, they are in an amazing condition. When Mr Swan

15 entered the caves, the first thing that struck him was the complete silence. The only life he found in the caves were a few spiders. Even the rabbits that had fashioned the entrance tunnel seemed to have left the underground network. The caves

20 themselves were bone dry throughout, seemingly unaffected by the rain falling on the ground above. “It was like entering an underground temple,” Mr Swan remarked. “There are walkways, arches and carvings on the walls and ceilings.”

25 Mr Swan reported that he felt like the character Indiana Jones from the Temple of Doom film series

when he first discovered the underground network; he expected to be attacked by the guardians of the cave or trigger hidden traps at any moment. After

30 taking a series of pictures, Mr Swan exited via the rabbit hole and then contacted the owner of the land where the caves are. The landowner admitted knowing of their location but had remained quiet for fear of being overrun by groups wanting to visit the

35 site. He had sealed the main entrance some years ago.

The caves are thought by some to be the work of followers of the Knights Templars - a mysterious medieval religious order that existed between the

40 12th and 14th centuries. The order was disbanded after its members were disgraced. Ironically, many of the followers of the order were rounded up and imprisoned on a fateful day in October 1307 - Friday 13th. This date, some believe, is the origin

45 for the superstition surrounding the unlucky Friday 13th in Western culture.

However, the truth surrounding the caves may be a little more ordinary and far less romantic. Experts have now dated the underground complex as being

50 only about some 200 hundred years old. It was hollowed out by ancestors of the current landowner as an underground folly.
