Trocellen Duct

The function of air-conditioning plant is to guarantee the correctexchange of air and the maintenance of the best temperature in orderto ensure our physical and psychic wellbeing in a comfortable envi-ronment.

The air is distributed within a building by means of ducts that needto be suitably insulated in order to avoid heat loss/increase and lowenergy consumption in line with current legislation.

Any condensation that may form on the air ducts also needs to beprevented to minimise energy loss and noise levels due to pumpsand/or fans must be kept to the minimum.

The formation of condensation on the ducts must be avoided at allcost since, as well as compromising the efficiency of the plant, it canalso create the perfect conditions for the proliferation of mold andbacteria and damage the false-ceilings owing to constantly drippingwater. To design the perfect system, you have to calculate the right thick-ness of insulation needed to avoid the formation of condensationand reduce the energy loss in line with legal requirements, bearingin mind the technical performance of the insulating material underthe envisaged working conditions. Below, for example, is an extract of Italian Law n° 10/91 concerningthe insulation of ventilation ducts.

THERMAL INSULATION & SOUNDPROOFING FOR AIR DUCTS

Ordinary Supplement to the (Italian) Gazzetta Ufficiale n° 242 dated 14th October 1993, Annex B

DECREE OF THE PRESIDENT OF THE ITALIAN REPUBLIC 26th August, n° 412.Rules bearing the standards for the design, installation, running andmaintenance of thermal plant for buildings in order to limit energyconsumption, implementing paragraph 4 of Art. 4 of Law n° 10dated 9th January 1991.

INSULATION OF HEAT DISTRIBUTION NETWORKS IN THER-MAL PLANT… they must be insulated with insulating material whose minimumthickness is determined by the data in table 1 below to suit the dia-meter of the pipes (expressed in mm) and the thermal conductivi-ty (λ) of the insulating material (expressed in W/m °C) at the tem-perature of 40 °C.

Table 1

…The hot air ducts used to heat the building during the Winter and runin non-heated rooms must be insulated with an insulating materialwhose min thickness must not be less than that shown in table 1 inthe case of pipes with an outside diameter of 20 - 39 mm.

Noise from air-conditioning plant need to be absorbed and reducedto avoid compromising environmental comfort. This is done bymeans of specific solutions adopted at the design stage.

TROCELLEN DUCT s easily applied to the metal ducts through a pro-cess of pre-adhesion. It significantly reduces wall vibrations and thussatisfies the requirement to keep noise levels down: we have foundthat this system makes for potential reductions in noise levels of rou-ghly 30-40 dB.

for money on the market today.

TROCELLEN DUCT is the new brand-name for a new line of air ductinsulation material.TROCELLEN is a closed cell, chemically cross-linked, polyolefin resinfoam offering high performance in terms of flame retardant protec-tion in the event of fire, plus lasting constant thermal performanceand soundproofing.TROCELLEN DUCT can be coated and adapted to offer a series ofadvantages:

Below is a list of the various types available:TROCELLEN DUCT CL1 (plain)Grey foam, with flame retardant additives for good fire safety: e.g.CL1 (Italy), M1 (France) etc.

TROCELLEN DUCT CL0-2 ALU

Anthracite grey foam, type N, laminated with smooth or embossedaluminium (50 m). Once glued to the inside or outside of the ducts, this product is highly flame resistant, being sandwiched between twonon combustible layers (aluminium). The denomination of this pro-duct complies with current Italian law (Ministerial DecreeDM.26.6.84 and amendments).

TROCELLEN DUCT CL1 ALU

Grey foam, type CL1, laminated with smooth or embossed alumi-nium (50 m).

TROCELLEN DUCT AL CL1

Like type CL1, but lined with embossed scratch-proof metallic PEfilm.

TROCELLEN DUCT AL CL1 REF

Grey foam, type CL1, laminated with a metallic polyester film for aninnovative look. Good thermal reflection and better adhesion of thesealing tape (we recommend using Duplex tape).

TROCELLEN DUCT CL1 ALU-NET

Grey foam, type CL1, laminated with a thin netted aluminium foil. Inaddition to complying with the Italian standard, it is also a “Class 0surface” according to British standard BS 476-Part 6/7 (thickness 13mm).

PRODUCT RANGE

APPLICATION

“AD” rolls (with adhesive) thickness 3-6-8-10 mm: the rolls have adhesive thickness 16-20-24-30 mm: please contact our Technical Office.Hot air heating plant, where temperatures may reach 60-80 °C: we recommend using rolls without adhesive and then spreading thespecific MATIBLOCK glue on both of the surfaces to be joined.

SEALS - TAPES - GLUE

TROCELLEN seals, thickness 3-6 mm.These seals should be used to join metal elements (duct flanges, theedges of refrigeration cell doors and ventilation vents) to guaranteehermetic sealing and vibration damping.Acrylic self-adhesive.Standard size: 15 mm x 6 mm x 10 m.

EPDM seals The material used for this type of sealant is EPDM/other polyolefinresin foam, offering superior compressive strength and excellentspring.Range: Thickness: 3-4-5 mm (10 m long) Thickness: 10-15-19 mm (5 m long) Width: 10-15-20-25-30-40-50-100 mm.

AL/CL1 tapes and Aluminium tapes (adhesive)To guarantee a good aesthetic finish, the product range also containsa series of con AL/CL1 tapes (50 mm wide, <1mm thick, 25 mmlong).Aluminium tapes: Thickness: 15-30-50 μm; Width: 50-75-100 mm; Length: 50 m. Embossed, smooth, smooth netted, Duplex.

INSTALLATION ON VENTILATION DUCTS

(Upon request a relevant DVD is available for the installation guide).

When using adhesive rolls to insulate such ducts, you must bear inmind a few rules to avoid the risk of the insulation peeling off themetal. Do not use on particularly cold metals. The glues used are pressure-sensitive, meaning that you must

apply suitable and an even pressure across the whole surface. The actual pressure applied (roughly 0.2-0.5 kg/cm2 is enough) is

not as crucial as the need to apply the same pressure across thesurface to avoid the formation of air bubbles.

The best way to join the insulation material and the metal is calen-daring ( pressing the two layers together ).

The insulation material must not be stretched: if used for externalinsulation of a duct, the insulation material must not be wrappedaround this, but cut to size for each section (see installation dia-grams).

The metal must be clean, without any traces of oil or dust. Do notuse solvents, but you can use dry cloths or naked flames to cleanthe metal.

Never use self-adhesive materials to insulate ducts installed out-doors: direct sunlight may heat the surfaces and can cause theinsulation material to peel off the metal duct. We recommendusing rolls without adhesive and then the specific MATIBLOCK

glue, spread on both surfaces to be joined.TROCELLEN DUCT IN ROLLS (150 cm wide)

To guarantee correct storage of the adhesive rolls, you must followthe recommendations below: The ideal storage temperature should always be kept within 10 °C- 25 °C. Adhesives are sensitive to jumps in temperature and maylose their adhesive properties (too hot) or become brittle (too cold),leading to the risk of peeling-off after installation. For no reason whatsoever should the adhesive rolls be stored out-doors: humidity, water and sun will seriously alter the behaviour ofthe adhesion. Avoid storing the rolls near windows and doors, where at all pos-sible, for the above reasons. The rolls should not be stored for more than period of storage 60days in warm weather (Spring and Summer) or 30 days in cold wea-ther (Autumn and Winter) before use. The rolls may, however, be exposed to higher or lower temperatu-res for brief periods (a few hours): this should not create problems, provided the exposure is proportional to the temperature limits and,
