What is APA?

The American Psychological Association (APA)

provides a method for source documentation that isused in most social sciences courses. The socialsciences place emphasis on the date a work wascreated, so most APA citation involves recording the

date of a particular work in the physical text. Thedate is usually placed immediately after the author’s

name in the “References” page at the end of an

essay.

Essays following the APA style of formattingtypically include a title page, abstract, main body, and references.

8/13/2019 Eng 101 Quiz4Review APA

http://slidepdf.com/reader/full/eng-101-quiz4review-apa 26/29

Formatting Differences APA uses a title page. The title page contains the title of

the paper, the author’s name, and the institutionalaffiliation. On the title page, the essay’s title should be

centered in the upper half of the page. The title shouldbe no more than 12 words in length and should notcontain abbreviations. The title may take up one or twolines. Beneath the title, type the author’s name: first

name, middle initial, and last name. Beneath theauthor’s name, type the institutional affiliation, which

should indicate the location where the author conducted

the research.

Formatting Differences (cont.)

The page header at the top of every page contains

the “TITLE OF YOUR PAPER” on the left hand side inall capital letters. This page header is usually a

shortened version of the essay’s title and cannot

exceed 50 characters including spacing and

punctuation.

Citation Differences

The last page is titled “References” not “Works

Cited.” It is centered at the top of the page. Do notbold, underline, or use quotation marks.

Only the first word of a title is capitalized. Also

capitalize the first word after a dash or colon. Do notitalicize, underline, or put quotes around the titles of

shorter works such as journal articles or essays in

edited collections.

Books: author name, publication year, work title,

publication city, and publisher
