Energy Project
Purpose:
To build a “system” that will “cook” food using energy transfer in the form of convection.
Challenge:
To build the most efficient, functional solar oven to “cook” a
marshmallow
RequirementsAll solar ovens must meet the following design modifications:1. An internal elevated cooking surface2. An elevated thermometer to collect temperature data for
10 minutes at a time (it cannot touch sides, bottom or top of oven)
3. You must change at least one thing between trials. You will be running at least 3 trials.
4. Unique designs and materials recommended5. Teacher will provide the heat source (sun: 100W light
bulb)6. A standard height for heat source will be provide by
teacher. (10cm)7. Teacher will provide the thermometer to measure
temperature inside oven.
Grade Criteria (90pts)Project grade will be determined by group and individual
grades
Group grade (50pts)Each group will create a Final plan that must include:• Written procedure in paragraph form (NO personal
pronouns)• Drawings or pictures• List of group member• List of materials• Neat and No spelling errors
Grade Criteria (cont…)
Individual Grade (50pts.)• Each person must provide a preliminary plan that
includes: written instructions (NO personal pronouns, in paragraph form) and with pictures
• A data table with two trials and temperature measured every minute for 20 minutes and observation recorded
• A graph with all temperature data• All post lab questions answered in complete
sentences• Neat with NO spelling errors

Daily Grade Points Earned
Cleaned the work area and worked until told to clean up.
5 points
Did not clean up or was not working the entire time.

Performance Criteria
15 pts. Temp is within 90% of best
All criteria met
12 pts. Temp is within 75% of best
9 pts. Temp is within 50% of best
6 pts. Temp is within 25% of best
3 pts. Temp is within 10% of best
0 pts. Temp is less than 10% of best
Not all criterion are met
Oven Lab Conclusion Questions:
1. List the modification you made to your oven and explain why you did each.
2. Which modification had the greatest impact on the increase in temperature within your oven? Why?
3. What modification do you wish you had done? (If you could redo this project what would you do differently?)
4. If you had 2 identical ovens but oven #1 was 5 times larger than oven #1, which one would be the most efficient? And Why?
Conclusion Questions cont….
5. What type of energy is coming from the light?
6. What type of energy (electromagnetic radiation) is cooking your marshmallow?
