Cut costs with energy-efficient lightingLighting is an essential part of your business. In fact, it can account for 40 percent of your building’s electricity costs. So it’s no surprise that switching to high-efficiency options can make a big difference when it comes to your energy bills. Efficient lighting also can help with productivity, quality control, security, safety, and reduced maintenance costs.

Light-emitting diode (LED) bulbs use 85 percent less energy and last about 25 times longer than incandescent bulbs. When shopping for LEDs, look for products that meet the ENERGY STAR® requirements or visit the DesignLights Consortium (DLC) at designlights.org for details on DLC-qualified products.

Otter Tail Telcom in Fergus Falls, Minnesota, replaced warmer-colored fluorescent lamps (left panel below) with LED lamps more closely matching actual daylight (right panel below).

The LED upgrade reduced wattage from 128 watts per fixture to 36 watts per fixture—a 72 percent reduction in energy consumption—and improved light quality in the office area. And Otter Tail Telcom received a $6,300 rebate through our company’s Minnesota Conservation Improvement Program.

move heat instead of creating it. A geothermal heat pump can reduce annual

heating and cooling costs by 70 percent. And an air-source heat pump operates at more than 200 percent efficiency. Receive a rebate for heat pumps labeled as ENERGY STAR® or that show proof of efficiency of meeting or exceeding ENERGY STAR ratings.

Water heatingRebates are available for new electric water-heating installations with proof of a minimum 90 percent efficiency (energy factor of .90 or higher) when

you include them in one of our controlled-service programs. Another option is direct water-heating control through a firm-service rate.

ABU Trailer saves with thermal storageABU Trailer in Dwight, North Dakota, added in-floor hydronic heat when they expanded last year and now will save over $3,300 annually in electric heating costs. Their electric boiler heats the liquid that is circulated under the building in tubing buried in 12 inches of sand. The new thermal-storage heating system also earned ABU Trailer a $4,800 Otter Tail Power Company rebate to help maximize the value of our off-peak programs.

Ways to save with heat pumps, water heating, and thermal storageReady to make energy-efficient updates to your business? Here are a few technologies to consider:

Thermal storageDuring off-peak hours thermal-storage heating systems generate and store heat in sand or specially designed bricks and use it to heat spaces during peak periods. These systems can provide heating for a whole building, a single floor, or an addition.

Thermal-storage cooling systems are well suited to commercial installations and generate ice or cooled water that’s used to cool spaces during peak periods.

Save with off-peak rates that are up to 50 percent less than our standard price per kilowatt-hour. And earn a rebate when you install a thermal-storage system on an off-peak rate.
