is the company which deals with intaking, treating, storing and sales of potable water for over 3million inhabitants of the Silesia Industry District and partly for the malopolskie
voivodeship.
Górnośląskie Przedsiębiorstwo Wodociągów S.A.
The Silesia Waterworks Plc., Katowice, Coordinator of Silesian Water Cluster
The amount of water we produce per day in our two big plants and nine water treatment stations is nearly 450 thousand cubic meters.
A system of an over 900 km water main network with pipelines diameter of even 2000 mm places us among the biggest waterworks in Europe.
In case of failure or natural disaster we, as the only ones in region, are able to supply water to the opposite end of Upper Silesia.
Nine network reservoirs of total capacity of 374 thousand cubic meters gives us the possibility of fast and flexible response to critical situations.
The reservoirs are not only used as a storage of potable water in case of failure but also stabilize the pressure in the water supply network. Furthermore, we minimize the effects of failures and damages of technical equipment thanks to central control system.
Water for the consumer is a product of the best quality.
In our company water is treated
using modern methods and
processes. Besides classic
coagulation and filtration on sand
filters we also use ozonization and
filtration on activated carbon.
Thanks to it,
our product has the required quality:
physical-chemical, bacteriological
and organoleptic.
System based on inter-reservoir transfers and the use of
the latest technologies of water treatment makes the
possibility of efficient delivery of water with parameters
fulfilling the requirements of the European Union.
All continous production processes need energy Silesian Waterworks PLc. is one of the bigger energy consumer in the
region. Total annual requirement of electric energy is over
110 000 MWh and over 30 000 MWh of thermal energy

Silesian Water Cluster & Silesian
Waterworks PLC. common projects
The new cluster`s iniciative :
Establishment of new eco-enterprise
Eco-Energy Silesia Plc.
Fields of activities of the new cluster`s entrprise:
1. Energy production by the recycling of the savages in the energy renewable
processes.
2. Heat and energy infrastructure management among the whole Silesian
Waterworks Holding using the best achievement techniques.
3. Renewable sources technologies implementation into the Silesian
Waterworks Holding, i.eg. solar and photovoltaic technologies, water and
wind renewable energy technologies.
All activities are undertaken due to the motto:
Nature and Man - friendly co-existence
Potential of surface water as a
source of energy depends on two
main factors: flow rate and difference
of levels. This potential in case of the
Company is rather small because of
little land slope. These resources
may be split into two groups:
Resources provided by water
courses and water reservoirs
Resources provided by main
gravitational water pipelines.
Renewable Energy from the water
Project of construction small hydro plants
Small hydro plants
Silesian Waterworks Plc. took actions to establish small
hydro plants by using enormous resources of flowing water
in the rivers and dams.
The definition of a small hydro project varies but
a generating capacity of up to 5 megawatts (MW).
Silesian Waterworks Plc. has a masterplan to built
10 small hydro plants for total generating capacity to
1,5 MW in the next 2 years

Small hydro plant localized in water treatment plant
Maczki on Biała Przemsza river
First small hydro plant will produce energy using existing weir on the river. For now it is
beeing desined, but the predicted amounts of the energy produced by the plant varies
around 79,56 kW, that gives production of energy at the level of 696,95 MWh/year.
Investment cost is estimated at 3 800 000 PLN (950 000 €), but it is possible to gain co-
funding of 50% of costs from local founding WFOŚiGW in Katowice.

The design concept of this
hydro plant is also based on
energy of flowing water through
the weir. Generating capacity is
about 22,5 kW, which gives
197,14 MWh/year of produced
energy. Investment cost is
estimated at 1 450 000 PLN
(362 500 €), and it is also
possible to apply for 50% co-
funding from WOŚiGW in
Katowice.

The hydro plant is the smallest
one in terms of quantity of
energy produced. Generating
capacity is about 10,3 kW,
which gives 90 MWh/year of
produced energy. Investment
cost is estimated at 2 961 664
PLN, (740 000 €) again
possible co-funding of 50% of
the project budget.
Renewable Energy from the Earth
Geothermal energy- heat pumps
It comprises, inter alia, geopressure energy, energy of dry hot rocks and
geothermal energy accumulated in subterranean waters. Currently, the
Company is using power generated by heat pumps in WTP's Łazy and
Bibiela for its own needs (heating of premises).
Operation of the foregoing WTP's is based on subterranean water
sources. Abyssal water will be used for heating of industrial facilities in
the following divisions of the Company :
• WTP Miedary – is currently using coal-fired boiler
• WTP Zawada – is using gas-fired boiler house
Renewable Energy from the Sun
Solar energy
Technologies of conversion of solar radiation energy using solar collectors
have the best chance of fast development within a short period of time.
Climate conditions demonstrate very uneven distribution of solar radiation
within a year. Therefore, solar energy may be used by the Company in
combination with e.g. heat pumps. Possibilities to use this energy source are
very large because solar collectors may be installed on the roofs of
manufacturing bays, and these objects are usually of large surfaces,
sometimes amounting to few thousand square meters.
