Invitation to

regional Physical Activity Forum

Click here to book your FREE place. ukactive, Public Health England, the County Sports Partnership Network and the Local Government Association are delighted to invite you to the second stream of Moving More, Living More regional physical activity forum on Friday 13th March at The Studio venue in Birmingham. Addressing physical inactivity is a national priority, and we know from international, national and local work that a strategic, cross-sector approach is required to address this increasing problem. It is critical that this approach is taken to effectively engage with key stakeholders to join up the areas that contribute to, and gain from, improved health and wellbeing through physical activity. If you require any assistance booking please e-mail [email protected]. A formalised agenda with a full list of speakers and workshops will be available in due course.

New Charter to be unveiled to get many more

disabled people active

More sport and physical activity providers will be asked to commit their support to a new Charter, which aims to improve the number of active disabled people. The English Federation of Disability Sport’s Charter for Change will be unveiled by Baroness Tanni Grey-Thompson and Gerry Sutcliffe MP at an important occasion within the Houses of Parliament on Tuesday 24 February. The Charter outlines the key changes needed to ensure many more disabled people can reap the benefits of being active for life. In January, figures released for Sport England’s Active People Survey 8 showed 121,700 fewer disabled people participated in the period October 2013-2014 since the previous recording. However, research shows that most disabled people are not as active as they would like to be and that demand is not being met. EFDS’s Lifestyle Report released in 2013 found that seven in ten disabled people want to increase their physical activity. The Charter sets out what disabled people say they need to make this possible and outlines three asks: 1. Everyone involved in providing sport or physical activity will support disabled people to participate. 2. Disabled people will have the same opportunity as non-disabled people to be active throughout their lives. 3. All communications about sport and physical activity will promote positive public attitudes towards disabled people’s participation. For more information on the Charter and how you can commit your support, visit www.efds.co.uk/charter Follow the hashtag #EFDSCharter on the night.

Deaf Sport Survey

The survey is the first national sport and physical activity survey and as such it is hugely important that as many people who are deaf or hard of hearing know about the survey and complete it. The survey results will benefit CSP`s, NGB`s and other service providers to map and deliver better targeted activities to the deaf community. and hopefully increase the number of deaf inclusive projects funded by both national and local funders.

The deaf community is very fragmented and spread out across a wide range of services. Outside of Deaf Peoples Organisations there is an often hidden communities in most secondary and primary schools though at secondary school level people who are deaf or hard of hearing may be picked up by SEN. Other members of the community access Local Authority Services, most have some form of deaf advisory team and certainly have links to Health and Wellbeing groups.

So it is vitally important that CSP`s use their networks to forward on this information to Schools, HE/FE establishments and local Authorities and also as many community groups as possible. UK Deaf Sport want to work in partnership with CSP`s to ensure the message penetrates as far into local communities as possible.
