Sustainable energy production has a long tradition in the

Black Forest. For centuries water has powered mills, saw

works and forges. Chopped wood was the main heating

source in every farmhouse and provided the power for craft

production and glassblowing.

We transferred this tradition in our times. Since June 2016

we produce in the EnergieWerk Hofgut Sternen our own

electricity and heat by using local and renewable energy

ressources – our contribution to a sustainable tourism.

OUR OBJECTIVES I Innovation & Uniqueness

Meet current electrical energy - 610.000 kWh, and heat requirements - 700.000 kWh, with local energy production

Use four locally available energy sources: sun, wood, gray water und water from sources for cooling

Employ intelligent control systems – smart grid - to optimize processes and reduce energy requirements

Meaningful innovations are the key to success

Taking into consideration both energy requirements and available resources, facility components

were assembled and combined into a system with effective control and regulation. The

requirement for flexible energy delivery necessitated dynamic activation of individual

components in order to compensate for daily demand peaks or seasonal demand variation.

The EnergieWerk Hofgut Sternen integrates traditional Black Forest energy source, water and

wood, with modern energy technology and intelligent process guidance and control systems.

Valuable synergies both for the environment and for the region

Alleviate the critical state of the regional environment by using gray water (gray water = treated wastewater / discharge from

wastewater treatment plant)*

Reduction of

… foam formation in Löffelbach water

… hygienically unsafe water spray into the air

… overheating of Löffelbach water, threatening the animals and fish living there

… peak gray water inflow - over74 l/s – to 14 l/s (60 l/s is diverted to the hydro power plant)

After mechanization with hydropower, steam engines, mass production and deployment of electronics and IT, we focus on

sustainable operations and actively managing our natural resources. The use of hydropower is one of the most

environmentally friendly methods for generating electricity. Neither air nor water are heated or contaminated with exhaust

gases or pollutants.

EnergieWerk Hofgut Sternen

The EnergieWerk Hofgut Sternen is a pioneering project for the future. For a completely independent energy network we combine traditional energy sources and modern technology (hydro power, heat exchanger, heat pump, wood chip boiler, wood gasifier – CHP unit, heat storage, photovoltaics, cooling system). This is a unique model.

Making knowledge usable, learning from the past and deploying new technology – this is how we develop Hofgut Sternen – The Black Forest Village.
