You can insert citations in footnotes. First, use the appropriate Word command to create the footnote. Then, insert the EndNote citation in the footnote. Word controls the placement and numbering of the footnote, and EndNote formats the citation based on the current style. You must select a style that formats footnotes; for example, Chicago 15th A.

Question: Does EndNote work with footnotes?

It is quirky but it can be done BUT not with APA (no footnotes in APA)

Question: I am entering a document from an organization, say National Association of Social Workers, EndNote abbreviates this organization on the reference page to read Worker, N A o S, which is not correct APA format. Any suggestions?

• Author is National Association of Social Workers [NASW]• EndNote needs to know this is one name, a last name of author• Put a comma after association’s name and EndNote is happy:

National Association of Social Workers,or NASW,

• The reference cite: National Association of Social Workers. (1999).

• First text citation: (National Association of Social Workers NASW, 1999)

• Subsequent text citations:(NASW, 1999)

Question? Citing electronic journal articles

Look for a “persistent URL” or the Digital Object Identifier (DOI)

The APA 6th says “Do not include retrieval dates” if you have a DOI.

If you are using a PDF version of the article, cite as you would a print journal. If the article lists its DOI, add this to the end of the citation.

It is not necessary to include database information (i.e. Wilson or Proquest, etc.)

EndNote Questions 24

Question? When citing a web page, the citation date, may not always be apparent.

Look for an “Updated. . . .” at the bottom of the screen.  Whatever information you have is all you can give, just don’t mention “not there” in the citation. The citation is to help the reader find the information you found. Sometimes you have to craft the citation yourself and that is OK.
