Who is BSMQ?Business and Skilled Migration Queensland (BSMQ) is the state nominating body for the Queensland Government and a business unit of Trade & Investment Queensland (TIQ). BSMQ assesses and nominates skilled and business applications for Queensland state nominated visas on behalf of the Australian Department of Immigration and Border Protection (DIBP).

How can we help you?The State of Queensland nominates highly skilled migrants with occupations who fill a range of the state’s skilled shortages, in order to help drive economic growth and productivity. Queensland also offers options to international students who have completed a full Master’s or PhD in Queensland. Visas are granted to applicants who have a genuine interest and commitment to living, working and contributing to the Queensland economy, with a view to long-term settlement.

State Nominated Skilled Migration VisasBSMQ offers you three skilled visa subclasses:

1) Skilled Nominated (Permanent) (subclass 190) visa This visa is for nominated skilled workers who wish to live and work in Queensland permanently. It will provide you with five additional points towards your DIBP points test.

2) Skilled Regional (Provisional) (subclass 489) visa This is a provisional visa that allows nominated skilled workers to work and live in regional Queensland for four years, and is a pathway to permanent residency. It will provide you with 10 additional points towards your DIBP points test.

3) Skilled Alumni Pathway – Masters and PhD (Permanent) (subclass 190) visa This visa is for Master's or PhD graduates who have completed 100% of their degree at a Queensland university and who wish to live and work in Queensland permanently. It will provide you with five additional points towards your DIBP points test.

How do I get Queensland state nomination? In order to be eligible for a state nominated visa you must:

score a minimum of at least 60 points (including the additional Queensland state nominated points) on the DIBP points test and meet relevant DIBP visa criteria.

select ‘Queensland’ as your nominated state of choice.

You may be eligible for a state nominated visa if you:

have an occupation on the Queensland Skills Occupation List (QSOL), or

are an alumni who graduated in the last two years from a Queensland university with a Master's or PhD. Students graduating with a Queensland Master’s degree must have an occupation on the QSOL, while PhD graduates must follow the CSOL occupation list.

Next stepsStep 1: Research visa options, criteria and processes on the Department of Immigration and Border Protection (DIBP)website and the BSMQ website. Ensure you meet both DIBP criteria and BSMQ criteria and have all your documentation prepared before you apply.

Step 2: Lodge an Expression of Interest (EOI) through the DIBP SkillSelect database www.border.gov.au/Trav/Work/Skil. Please ensure all information, such as work experience, is included in your EOI. Preference will be given to applicants who select Queensland as their nominating state of choice.

Step 3: BSMQ only assesses EOIs that meet DIBP and BSMQ criteria. You will receive an invitation to lodge an application with BSMQ. You will be requested to provide various documents. Documents are to be uploaded electronically through the Document Portal link provided in your invitation email. We do not accept attachments sent to us by email.

Step 4: When you have received your invitation:

a. Upload required documents

b. Pay a non-refundable application fee to BSMQ in order to finalise your application. Visit www.migration.qld.gov.au for detailed information on fees.

BSMQ will review your application and may request further documentation. Note: you will be given two weeks to finalise your application from the date of invitation. Applications not finalized within this timeframe will be closed and applicants will need to submit a new EOI if they wish to re-seek Queensland nomination.

Step 5: Once your completed BSMQ application is received and approved, you will receive an invitation from DIBP to lodge your visa application.

Step 6: Submit your visa application and documents to DIBP. You will be given 60 days to lodge your visa application with DIBP.

Processing time: A decision on your Queensland nomination will be made within 10 business days of all documents being submitted to BSMQ.
