Focus on Famous Military Leaders: Napoleon Bonaparte I
Background Information: Napoleon Bonaparte I (1769-‐1821): Emperor 1804–14 and 1815; full name Napoleon Bonaparte; known as Napoleon. In 1799, he joined a conspiracy that overthrew the Directory, becoming the supreme ruler of France. He declared himself emperor in 1804 and established an empire stretching from Spain to Poland. After defeats at Trafalgar in 1805 and in Russia in 1812, he abdicated and was exiled to the island of Elba in 1814. He returned to power in 1815, but was defeated at Waterloo and exiled to the island of St. Helena. Napoleon is one of the most well-‐known military leaders of all time. He is known for his ambitious campaign to continuously improve his empire in conquering nation after nation. At one point, he controlled a large part of Europe. In Ender’s Game, the adults compare the children to famous military and political figures (Napoleon, Wellington, Caesar, and Brutus in order to illustrate how unlike children the students are at Battle School. Directions: Below, you will find three quotes from Napoleon about war, battle, and military strategy in general. Napoleon makes these quotes as statements of truths. Choose one of these quotes and demonstrate (explain with evidence) how that quote holds true in Ender’s Game. In other words, if you choose “Never interrupt your enemy when he is making a mistake,” you will need to answer the following question: “how is this true in Ender’s Game so far?” Support your answer with examples of things that happen in the book (specific events).
"There are but two powers in the world, the sword and the mind. In the long run the sword is always beaten
by the mind."
"Never interrupt your enemy when he is making a mistake."
