description

This is a project I did for Iowa State, the task was to design a product for disabled seniors to help them live independently. I chose to create an IOS app that will help deaf seniors communicate with family and friends that do not understand sign language. This describes the project in detail and explains my process.

ENABLEITTarget AudiencePrimaryElderly Adults that are Deaf or Hearing Impaired, Ages 60-75

SecondaryChildren and Grandchildren [Ages Vary]

ObjectiveSeniors that suffer with hearing impairment and deafness can have a very difficult time communicating with neighbors, children grandchildren or other family members. This can make independent living quite difficult. My goal was to create an application to assist these individuals with independent living and communication. inTouch offers deaf elderly citizens a way to communicate with those that do not speak or understand sign language. This application will help these citizens go shopping, talk to neighbors and doctors and live independently.

Product DescriptioninTouch is an IOS application that allows the hearing impaired to communicate with those who do not speak or understand sign language. With this application users have text-to-speech functionality for speaking to others, it also offers speech-to-text for listening. This app features these functions in an easy-to-follow messaging interface keeping the whole conversation visible. inTouch is styled using warm, high contrast colors and large text for better readability and visibility. This application also helps users read small text by magnifying areas on the backlit screen, the light may also be used in dark spaces.

LogoExploration

I felt that an ear should be present in this logo to represent communication and sound. I went through a few different iterations of the ear and based on feedback I adjusted the sound waves coming from the ear.

The matrices helped me choose the best background for the application icon. I decided to go with a simple gradient from top to bottom to keep the logo visible.

BrandExploration

I wanted inTouch to have a personal feel and represent sound and communication so I chose to add an ear with sound waves. The font is easy to read at small sizes and creates a nice flow from the “h” to the inside of the ear. The ear fit well into the copy so I decided to use it as the primary symbol. The copy itself can be used as a secondary symbol and the ear graphic can be used in other areas.

Warm colors work well for this logo as the target audience may have difficulties viewing cooler colors. I went with a brick red color to bring in contrast against the bright backgrounds used inside the interface.
