As one of the top performing Sixth Form Colleges in the country, we have a consistent record of academic achievement with a 98.3% A-Level pass rate (100% in 27 subjects) and appearing in the list of Top 20 Sixth Form Colleges in the UK.

We are the largest provider of STEM subjects outside of Cambridge and also held the title of top sporting college in the whole of the eastern region for 8 years in a row.

Our students continue to succeed at levels well above the national rates and students completing their A-Levels are performing higher than the national rates for Sixth Form Colleges which is a fantastic achievement. Our AS students and BTECs achieve excellence too and the progress our students make from GCSE to the time they leave EN puts the college in the top 25% for value added in the country.

Success and unrivalled choice – Our A-level pass rate is 98.3% (100% in 27 subjects) and almost all of our students make it to their chosen destinations after leaving EN. Many go on to university, others will pursue apprenticeships, further training or full time employment. Whatever their aspiration, EN can help them achieve it.

A modern campus – In recent years, over £8 million has been invested into the EN campus. The Poulson and Gentry buildings offer a modern learning environment for our students. The state of the art Newman building comprises an open access digital design suite, two photographic editing suites with darkroom facilities, a 3 dimensional design studio and workshop and specialist classrooms for graphic design, fine art and textiles. This development takes the college’s visual arts courses even more strongly into the digital age, maintaining its reputation as an outstanding provider of creative arts courses.

Helping you make the right choice... Tutorial support We pride ourselves on the range of individually tailored support and guidance programmes we offer to students to ensure they get the very best service from EN.

Pre Entry

We host a number of pre-entry events to enable you to find out as much as possible about EN and the courses we offer. These include:

• Presentations in schools throughout September to December. We attend Year 11 assemblies, school open evenings and careers events. We also support a number of other events between Year 8 and 10 throughout the year.

• Open Day and Open Evening on Thursday 8 October 2015

• Information Evenings on Thursday 26 November 2015 and Thursday 10 March 2016

• Individual advisory interviews in schools or at college between October 2015 and April 2016

• Taster Day on Friday 24 June 2016

You can also contact the Admissions Team to arrange any additional visits to the College, to find out more about our events or to ask any questions you have.

Throughout this time, we make every effort to support you to make the right decision about your future. We give you the flexibility to change your choice of subjects after your initial advisory interview. Many students do so, for example, after receiving their GCSE results.

The College reserves the right to amend its course offer.

EN’s pastoral system is built around Personal and Senior Tutors and often your Personal Tutor will teach you on one of your courses.

Your Personal and Senior Tutor will:

• Help you to plan for your future including support with university applications

• Monitor your progress and encourage you to achieve your full potential

• Ensure communication between and EN and your parents/carers

The College provides excellent support for students with additional learning needs. Information about our services is available from application through to enrolment and the entire time students are at EN. There is also a Student Welfare Co-ordinator and Student Mentors.

Careers Development Programme Careers Development ProgrammeWe are passionate about preparing students for their futures, whatever their ambition, and our Careers Development Programme enhances the opportunities for our students to progress to university, apprenticeships or directly into employment.

We have established contacts with a multitude of employers, from all of the main employment sectors. Our students can opt to take part in placements within an industry or sector that may interest them. In return, students will need to demonstrate commitment, produce a supporting statement and attend an interview at the prospective placement.

We also encourage our students to get involved in Social Action, which includes volunteering, fund raising and campaigning. Our students have the option of joining the National Citizen Service (NCS) programme, which helps young people build skills for work and life while taking on exciting challenges, making new friends and contributing to their community.

Work Related Learning is an important part of our Career Development Programme. You will see that there are many forms of Work Related Learning (WRL):

• Enterprise education• Work experience• Mentoring• Work shadowing• Careers information• Curriculum linked visits• Workshops• Projects• Mock interviews• Industry days• Practical experience• Part-time work• Tasters• Work simulations

We encourage and support students to seek relevant Work Related Learning during their time at the College so that they develop their employability skills and make informed decisions about their next steps after sixth form.

The Professional Mentoring Scheme provides individual support from someone who already works in a profession or industry that a student may be interested in joining.

Our industry visits involve a wide range of sectors from energy and engineering, to the food and drink industry.

Many of our students get involved in project work with local businesses and other organisations. This is not only great for their CVs but gives them an opportunity to work to a real brief, liaising with the ‘customer’.

We help students plan for possible progression routes, with an annual Careers Fair, many talks and workshops from visiting speakers, a HE progression information evening and several enterprise events.

This year we held our inaugural apprenticeship information event as an increasing number of our students and their parents are interested in finding out more about this progression pathway.

Student Association Passionate about successThe Student Association is elected by students, for students.

Throughout the year the Student Association works hard to organise events around College, often incorporated into fundraising for various charities.

The Student Association also works hard to improve the College by holding frequent student surveys to try and find what students may want changing, and then do their best to implement these changes. Last year’s events include a 5-a-side football tournament in aid of the Brain Tumour Research Foundation, a Great EN Bake Off in aid of Comic

Relief, a Christmas Quiz and a Political Awareness Day.

The Student Association also encourages the creation of societies within College, this last year we have overseen the creation of a Debating Society, Feminist Society, Card Society and a Programming Society.

The Student Association consists of 8 students. Elected annually, each student within the Association takes up a role such as Treasurer and Communications Officer. We also have two student governors who meet with the board of governors frequently throughout the year.

East Norfolk Sixth Form College’s Board of Governors is made up of 19 volunteer members drawn from the local community who bring their expertise, energy and commitment to support the College in making the right decisions and improving opportunities and outcomes for young people in our area.

Governors have a broad range of collective experience and are gathered from a variety cultural backgrounds. Currently our Board has representatives from business, social work, finance, law, education

and medicine. Some Governors are directly appointed by the Board and others are elected by the College’s staff, students or parents.

Governors play a strategic and oversight role in respect of college life. Our function is to determine strategic policy and to monitor performance and outcomes – essentially Governors act as a “critical friend” to the College’s Senior Management Team. Governors at EN meet regularly as a collective Board and additional meetings of smaller specialist Committees support the Board further. All of our meetings are conducted at the College and minutes of meetings are available on the College website.

The Governors are supported by a qualified, specialist Governance Adviser. If you have any questions regarding governance at EN, or might like to become involved further please do get in touch.

Out & about Getting out of the classroom adds a real-life dimension to our students’ time at EN. We provide the opportunity to attend a wide variety of subject related educational visits to enhance their learning experience. No matter what the subject, there is usually a trip!

The College runs around 100 educational visits every year including Strasbourg, Ypres, the Somme, Switzerland and Amsterdam. Trips to London are a regular feature with visits to the Houses of Parliament, art galleries and museums and hitting the West End

to take in the latest show. Students also attend national and local conferences, competitions and open days.

The annual ski trip takes place during February half term and is pure fun and one of the most popular dates on the College calendar.

In addition, EN students benefit from the numerous guest speakers that are invited to the College. From acclaimed authors, local politicians, university lecturers and former EN students, there is something for everyone to enjoy.

Applying to EN Interviews and Taster Day You already have enough to think about in Year 11 so we want your application to EN to be a stress free process.

The sooner you apply, the sooner we can arrange your interview and confirm your offer of a place to study the subjects you want.

Online applications open on 1 September 2015

Once you have completed all the boxes and submitted your online application, we will send you e-mail confirmation that your form has been received.

Alternatively, you can apply via www.helpyouchoose.org and your school will help you to submit your application.

All applicants will have an interview which will take place in school or at EN.

Once we have received your application we will contact you with a date and time for your interview. You will be asked to bring your predicted GCSE grades with you.

Taster Day will be held on Friday 24 June 2016 and that will be your

chance to find out more detail about the courses you have chosen to study, meet your tutors and fellow classmates and also start to familiarise yourself with the campus.

Enrolment TimelineOctober /December 2015 – Visit the College and find out more about the subjects we offer, meet the tutors and view our facilities.

September 2015/March 2016 – Year 11 students submit their applications to EN via the college website or via Help you Choose.

October 2015/April 2016 – Students will have their advisory interview to discuss courses and confirm their provisional offer of a place at EN. This will take place in school or at the college. Students should complete their application packs within two weeks of interview to secure their place.

Friday 24 June 2016 – Annual Taster Day. All prospective students attend the college for taster sessions in their chosen subjects to ensure they are confident with their selected subjects.

August 2016 – After GCSE results day, early advice and support is available at the College.

August 2016/September 2016 – Enrolment takes place with a final interview and confirmation of study programme.

Supporting your EN journey...

Each year we provide support for around 300 students with a wide variety of learning needs and disabilities.

We have established strong provision for learners with a wide range of needs including autism, specific learning difficulties, physical and sensory impairments and mental health needs. Our integrated provision covers welfare, pastoral and learning support services.

We work closely with partner schools and other institutions through transition planning between school and college to make sure we are aware of learning support needs as soon as possible so that we develop appropriate plans for students. We are happy to make visits to schools and other institutions to support the transition process.

Once students with identified needs arrive at EN they can be offered a range of distinct support provision within the Additional Learning Support team, in addition to the wider support arrangements within curriculum, pastoral and welfare teams. Examples of the range of support which might be offered are:

• One to one weekly support for study skills, literacy, language and numeracy, specific learning difficulties

A-level Subjects A-levels continue to be the primary qualifications for post-16 study and remain the most popular courses at EN.

Focusing on just a few subjects that you enjoy in greater depth will enable you to develop your knowledge and skills in those areas. Your choices will very often be linked to your career aspirations and relevant to both university and employment destinations.

A-levels are not easy. They are a big step up from GCSE and they are designed to challenge you. To be successful you will need academic ability, to choose the right range of courses and be willing to work hard to achieve success.

Choosing the right courses is key and at EN we will help you decide. Commonly, we recommend that you take subjects you like, that you have a good chance of succeeding in and that will be useful to you in your chosen future career path.

Over two years, you will take AS level in your first year. The AS supports the transition from GCSE to a more advanced level of working and helps prepare you for the full A-level.

Ultimately, your success will also be based on your ability to cope well with exams as all A-levels have them as well as coursework in some subjects.

A-levels are rewarding qualifications that open up a whole range of options for your future. At EN our A-level pass rate is 98.3% so despite the challenge, you can be reassured that you are joining a college with an outstanding track record of success.

| A-Levels

3D Design Business StudiesEdexcel

3D Design is a specialism within the Art and Design team. Students develop skills in design, model making and drawing (both freehand and digital). Following an introductory period students work on personal projects.

The course has a dedicated studio equipped with computers, drawing tables and studio lighting for photographing 3D work. Adjacent to the studio is a well-equipped multi-media workshop for working in metal, wood, plastic, plaster and clay.

Many students have used the course as a stepping stone to degree courses in architecture, product design, engineering, model making, craft and jewellery, gaining entry to some of the most prestigious courses in the country.

OCR

A-Level Biology will give you an exciting insight into the contemporary world of biology. It covers the key concepts of biology, and practical skills are integrated throughout the course.

This combination of academic challenge and practical focus makes the prospect of studying A-level Biology highly appealing. You will learn about the impact of biological research and how it links to everyday life.

You will also learn to apply your knowledge, investigating and solving problems in a range of contexts.

Biology Chemistry

AQA

The aim of the new Business specifications is to take an all-inclusive approach to the subject in order to demonstrate the inter-related nature of individual topics. Students will use business models, theories and techniques to analyse contemporary business issues and situations covering:

• Marketing• Operations• Human resources• Finance

The focus is on how decisions in these four areas can improve business performance.

Developments in digital technology, business ethics and globalisation are covered so students can understand their impact on firms.

The A-Level takes a strategic approach to business. This involves the identification of businesses long-term or overall aims and interests and the means of achieving them through:

• Analysing the strategic position of a business

• Choosing a strategic direction• Strategic methods; how to pursue

strategies• Managing strategic change

Study A-level Chemistry A to find out the answers. A-level Chemistry will give you an exciting insight into the contemporary world of chemistry.

It covers the key concepts of chemistry and practical skills are integrated throughout the course. This combination of academic challenge and practical focus makes the prospect of studying A-level Chemistry highly appealing.

You will learn about chemistry in a range of different contexts and the impact it has on industry and many aspects of everyday life. You will learn to investigate and solve problems in a range of contexts.

Computer Science Drama & Theatre Studies

AQA

You don’t need to have prior knowledge of Computing but this is an academically demanding course.

You will learn through practical application, research and interactive activities how to solve problems using programming.

You should be prepared to spend time learning how to program and developing skills which will be of use in the workplace.

AQA

Creative Writing is a new A-level which enables students to study the craft of writing in a similar way to studying Art, Music or Theatre Studies.

During the course you will read a wide variety of texts, learn about the elements of fiction and non-fiction, experiment with different ways to generate ideas and improve the technical quality of your writing.

Creative Writing Economics

AQA

This is an exciting and challenging course, academically and practically. It helps you to develop strong independent and group working skills and encourages you to be resourceful and inventive.

You’ll explore classical and modern plays and will learn about performance theory through practical exploration of text and evaluative writing. You have to manage your time well and attend some rehearsals after college and at weekends, and make evening theatre visits.

You will work closely with the students in your group and may find that you make your best friends at college in the drama room.

• Ever wondered why things cost what they do?

• Ever thought about the choices you make when you buy a product?

• Ever wondered why there is not enough to go round?

• Ever wondered why some people are richer than others?

Then all this and more is covered in A-level Economics. Economics tries to understand how we try to match the unlimited wants that humans have with the limited resources the earth has.

Economics explores how we can do this efficiently and fairly.

Economics also considers whether we have achieved the right economic solutions to solve that problem. You will get the chance to debate this and to consider alternative policies and ideas.

English Language Environmental StudiesAQA

English Language enables you to develop your interest and enjoyment of English and a deep knowledge of how language works in a wide variety of real-world spoken and written texts. Language is distinct from A-level Literature as, on this course, you will focus mainly on non-fiction texts.

You will also engage creatively with topical issues in language in use. Throughout your studies, you will develop your understanding of all the influences that shape the language we use every day.

AQA

English Literature focuses on analysing poetry, novels and plays. At AS, you will study Othello and a range of pre-1900 poetry, alongside two novels: The Great Gatsby and The Mill on the Floss.

At some point in your life you will come into contact with the English legal system, whether this is to set up a business, write a will, get a divorce or report a crime.

The AS Law course will de-mystify the legal system by introducing you to the people and processes involved, from the role of the police and legal professionals to the ordinary men and women of the jury. You will discover how laws are made by Parliament, Judges and the European Union. At A2 level you will specialise in criminal law, learning how to prosecute and defend a range of offences.

This course involves the scientific study of mind and behaviour, looking at how and why people behave the way they do. You will learn about the different approaches to psychology and some key research studies, as well as developing the skills required to design a small scale psychological research project.

You will also be encouraged to discuss human behaviour and to evaluate the explanations that have been proposed within psychology.

OCR (MEI) - AS only

Quantitative Methods (Maths) is a relatively new AS qualification. It is designed for students who have achieved Grade C or better at GCSE Maths (Higher) and do not want to take the subject at A-Level but do use maths in other subjects and wish to study maths further.

As well as providing an AS qualification in its own right, this course will help support the mathematical components of other AS subjects. It provides students with the mathematical skills to tackle problems in a variety of different real and realistic contexts.

This course offers an exciting opportunity to fuse the study of Philosophy, Ethics and Psychology into one subject. We will examine the issues of euthanasia and the right to die, and explore the arguments surrounding the rights of non-human animals. In the second year, we explore medical ethics in greater depth, including consideration of the moral debate surrounding genetic engineering. We also consider the ethics of war. The final topic involves an in-depth study of issues of life, death and life after death, where we examine the range of beliefs in such things as the afterlife, reincarnation and notions of the spirit world.

Criminology aims to answer a number of key questions in society such as: How do we explain why people commit crime? What makes someone become a serial killer, or abusive to their own families? Knowing about different criminological theories will give you a sharper insight into the kind of thinking used by experts and politicians to explain crime and criminality.

The course provides an understanding of crime and deviance but also gives an insight into the range of related careers. Criminology L3 is equivalent to an AS/A-level.

Institute of Financial Studies

This course enables students to make informed decisions regarding their finances. It will also help you to become a responsible borrower, sensible saver and to have an appreciation of the need for financial planning throughout your life.

In the second year, the Diploma explores the financial services marketplace from the point of view of the provider and considers the methods that providers use in order to satisfy customer needs, wants and aspirations whilst operating competitively and profitably.

Whether you choose to progress to a career in the finance industry or not, the skills developed on this course will stand you in good stead for life.

This BTEC comprises core units that underpin the knowledge and skills that are valued in the engineering sector. One core unit focuses on essential knowledge, and the other core unit focuses on applying essential vocational skills.

It has been developed to:• Give learners the opportunity to

gain a broad understanding and knowledge of the engineering sector

• Give opportunities for learners to achieve a nationally recognised level 1 or level 2 engineering qualification

The Law affects every part of our lives and it is really not difficult to find examples of the law in society. Whether you are learning to drive, starting a part time job, buying something from a shop or joining a club. Law is everywhere. The course provides a sound good introduction to how the criminal and civil courts and process works.

Ever wondered what the difference is between a solicitor and barrister? Have you ever wondered what powers the police have in relation to the arrest, detention and questioning of those suspected of committing a criminal offence? What rights does a suspect have? Ever wondered what happens in the civil and criminal courts or where the law comes from? As you find out the answers to these questions you will have gained a through insight on how the law works.

Edexcel

This is a one year course which has been designed for learners who are working in the community or are looking to do so. It is particularly advantageous for those wishing to join a uniformed organisation and focuses on skills and knowledge that would be beneficial such as teamwork, communications and leadership.

You will become aware of the roles, responsibilities and purpose of different uniformed organisations and have the opportunity to go on a team building trip. The course is equivalent to one GCSE at grade C and above and can lead on to an advanced BTEC Level 3 Extended Diploma in Uniformed Public Services.

In this course you will study how a child develops from conception to age five; explore how children learn through play; find out how to care for new-born babies and toddlers; and discover how to encourage healthy eating habits in children.

Ascentis

This course is equivalent to a GCSE level course. Criminology is the study of criminals, victims and theories explaining

illegal behaviour. You will also look at the social reaction to crime and the effectiveness of anti-crime policies.

Pearson Edexcel

The level 2 BTEC in Information Technology particularly focusses on the use of the internet in today’s society and how we as consumers and creators choose to use it.

You will look at ‘the online world’ and the services and applications that exist online, this includes, databases, looking at communication, drives and document sharing and advertising.

You will look at how users create an ‘internet footprint’ and how you and others make use of the internet and all its functions.

There is also a focus on learning how to stay safe online. The course is suitable for those who already have a keen interest in IT and who are confident working on individual written, practical and online assignments.

This is a new version of the GCSE, and will focus on developing your reading and writing skills. In class, you will practice exam technique, and read a range of texts to develop your analytical skills.

Literacy workshop sessions will target areas you are less confident with, which will also help you with your other subjects.

Edexcel

The course is designed for those who wish to attain a GCSE Maths at grade B or above, usually for progression to Level 3 courses in college.

Similar to Foundation Maths, but with added topics such as:

Trigonometry, Quadratic Equations, Rearranging Formulae, Cumulative frequency and much more!

Film Studies Media Studies

Edexcel

The course is designed to help student obtain the C in Maths GCSE that is required by many employers and further/higher education courses.

Students who show the ability and attitude required can be put in early for the November session of exams.

OCR Gateway

This course is intended for students who have not achieved a C grade or better in any science course. Many careers require a C+ grade pass in a science-based subject and this course gives you an

opportunity to extend your science knowledge and upgrade your GCSE result.

You will need to complete this GCSE if you intend to pursue a career in teaching.

Maths (Foundation) Science (Core)

WJEC

These days most films on DVD come with a load of extras: how the film was made, deleted scenes and out-takes. If you enjoy the extras as well as watching the film then this might be the course for you. We start in the familiar surroundings of Hollywood before venturing beyond to explore world cinema. Learn from the greats and then create your very own film ideas.

You will look at the language of film, how films are constructed, and who the audiences and institutions are who make them. You will get the opportunity to design marketing materials for films and to study films, directors and actors that you are particularly interested in.

AQA

The media forms a large part of our lives, from the TV and films we watch to the music we listen to, and from computer games to the internet. This course explores a range of media products and gives you the opportunity to create your own, such as film posters and short films.

Throughout the course you will work individually and in groups in order to

understand how a media text has been constructed and who it has been made for.

You will then get the opportunity to create the products yourself. You will plan, film and edit a range of media texts and justify your design choices in written tasks.

Functional Skills is designed to help you gain confidence with your reading, writing and speaking so that you can go onto the English GCSE course. The classes are small, there is lots of help available; the emphasis is on support

with literacy, so we can help you pass other qualifications too. The certificate is taken on computers, and there is lots of time to prepare, plus getting ready for GCSE in one or two years. All the help is individualised.

This course is designed to help develop your mathematical ability along with helping you gain confidence in your mathematics work.

It will help with your basic number work required in other subjects and prepare you for being able to take GCSE maths in the future.

Institute of Financial Studies

This course is designed to help you manage and understand finances. You will learn about the various sources of money including earned income with tax and National Insurance calculations, inheritance benefits and borrowing.

You will also learn how to organise your money through personal budgeting, the use of bank and building society accounts and the concept and consequences of overspending and payment default.

You will look at how business manages money and the relationship between personal money management and business money management.

Tweets of approval A brief guide to GorlestonGorleston-on-Sea, also known as simply Gorleston, is a popular seaside resort and tourist destination positioned to the south of the River Yare which separates it from Great Yarmouth.

Gorleston’s main mark in the history books is that it was the historic centre of the herring fishing industry before becoming a major seaside resort in Edwardian times. Hundreds of fishing boats from the fleet would sail from the harbour.

Gorleston High Street is home to well-known brands and small independent retailers, a popular theatre, the Pavilion, St Andrews church, the renowned Ocean Rooms, golf course and numerous restaurants, pubs and cafés.

Many people will know the town as the location of the James Paget University Hospital.

As a student, at EN you will have the freedom to explore the town for yourself.

Bursaries & Getting here Financial support is available to students through the 16-18 Bursary Fund, which is designed to help support young people who face the greatest barriers to continuing in post-16 education.

The fund has two elements; the Vulnerable Bursary - for vulnerable young people, and the Discretionary Bursary for young people facing financial barriers.

Funds are to be used to help pay for costs related to study, such as the cost of transport, meals, books and equipment. The level of support which the college can offer is dependent on the total funding received and number of applications we receive.

Eligible students will have to sign an agreement before any payments can be made and payments may be withheld if the student does not comply with the conditions listed on the agreement relating to attendance, behaviour and punctuality. Students will be advised during enrolment and induction of the method and conditions of payment.

TransportFor both Norfolk and Suffolk students, transport to the college is currently free or subsidised. Arrangements are dependent on the annual policy of the two County Councils and are subject to annual approval by the EN Governors.

NorfolkIf you live in Norfolk then the college currently pays half of the yearly sum set by Norfolk County Council. For 2015-16 the yearly cost for transport was £495 but students only paid £247 because we paid the other £247.

SuffolkIf you live in Suffolk then the college currently pays half of the yearly sum set by Suffolk County Council. For 2015-16 the yearly cost for transport was £570 but students only paid £285 because we paid the other £285.

If you apply for either of EN’s Bursary Funds and your application is approved then the college will pay all the costs of a bus pass to either Norfolk County Council or Suffolk County Council, so this means you get a completely free bus pass!
