Hello and Welcome to the June 2010 issue of EN Magazine.

We have enjoyed a few days of sunshine in the past month and hopefully we will have many more to come.

When the sun comes out people appear to smile a lot more. Hopefully this summer we will all be smiling, after 44 years of hurt, at the 2010 World Cup. We take a look at the 2010 FIFA World Cup set up and the chance of England bringing the trophy home.

The sunshine also makes many of us look at our shape and dread the idea of getting out our summer clothes. We investigate some dieting options available and ways to lose weight and get fit for summer.

In this issue of EN Magazine we are joined by celebrity wedding planners Ant and Dick. They have taken time out of their hectic schedule to share their advice and experience with our readers on making sure the big day is a success.

We hope you enjoy reading this, our 3rd birthday issue of EN Magazine.

Four years ago I had an idea to produce a magazine for the local

area that would positively promote the area, the community, local people and local businesses.

This issue of EN Magazine sees that idea celebrating its 3rd birthday and the 28th issue of the magazine being published.

The last three years have seen ups and downs for EN Magazine. From our early success as a publishing every two months to publishing ten times a year and expanding our circulation to include Potters Bar, Cuffley and Northaw. We have continued through the tough economic times that have affected local business and people, which we hope we will see disappear and prosperity return for all. Throughout all of this EN Magazine has continued to try and stay positive, raising the profile of the area and the community. Promoting local activities and business; from dance classes to pubs, from fish and chip shops to restaurants, from hairdressers to fashion. We also try to give you an insight into what is going on in the area and articles of general interest which we hope you, our readers, enjoy.

At EN Magazine we are always trying to look forward and would like to hear from our readers so we can, through

our editorial, effectively reflect the local community. If you have any thoughts or ideas on the articles and issues that you would like to read about or feel other local people would like than please email us at [email protected] or write to us at EN magazine PO Box 1099 Enfield EN1 9JF.

Most importantly we would like to thank all of the local business that have made EN Magazine possible, by using the pages of the magazine to advertise to our readers. Their support has made it possible for us to deliver EN Magazine to our readers and we would encourage you to support all our advertisers and local businesses.

EN Magazine is now the largest circulated local community magazine in the EN area and we hope to continue to grow over the next few years. We also want to be the favourite magazine of local residents and will continue to try and improve to achieve this aim.

Thank you from all at EN Magazine, whether a reader or advertiser for making EN Magazine a success over the last 3 years.

Capel Manor Gardens is nearing completion

of its latest development project. Opening to the public on Saturday 12 June. ‘The Old Manor House ruin’, is being promoted by innovative Chief Executive of Capel Manor, Steve Dowbiggin OBE, as ‘putting the Manor back into Capel Manor Gardens’. The three-phase development is being constructed to the tune of £400,000 worth of sponsorship support. The final completed development aims to see visitor numbers to the gardens double.

The Old Manor House ruin which recreates the 16th Century Manor House demolished in 1836, will incorporate and be surrounded by sympathetic planting. Senior Gardeners Julie Phipps and Mark Cook, plan to recreate scenes of how things might have looked if this unique Manor House in Bullsmoor Lane, Enfield, had not been lost. Steve Dowbiggin said:

“We are planning to have the third and final phase of the development ready to coincide with visitors to the London Olympics Games in 2012. It will be a signature garden with world class planting that will tell the story of Capel Manor’s history”.

“The gardens are popular with visitors because of their diversity and the inspirational nature of the National Gardening Centre. This new garden makes sense of the whole site by telling the story of the Manor during the 800 years before it became one of Europe’s leading centres for horticultural excellence.”

The main sponsors of the project are Redwood Stone and Anglo Swimming Ponds but much of the funding of Phase I has come from the RSA Trust, News International, Scotts, Cemex, John Woods Nurseries, Beales Roses and Anglo Aquarium Plants.

Hiding behind tall red brick walls on the edge of Hertfordshire and Essex, Capel Manor’s 30 acres of richly planted themed gardens currently attract 60,000 visitors per year including local residents, coach parties, garden enthusiasts and families on a day out. It is anticipated ‘the Old Manor House ruin’ will increase that figure to 120,000 by 2012.

Local public house The Fallow Buck on Clay Hill

has opened an owner friendly bar, where thirsty dogs can take their owners with them for a well-deserved drink after a walk!

Set between the two open spaces of Hillyfields and Whitewebbs there has been a public house on the site since 1760.

New landlord Chris Valencia said “ When I took over the pub I noticed a large number of guests sitting outside with their dogs enjoying a drink and I thought why should I not invite them into the pub. The pub already has a separate bar which was under used as most of our customers come into the main bar and restaurant area. We already have a reputation for good quality food from our restaurant and now we will be able to cater for a whole new clientele in the “snug bar” which is totally separate from

the dining area.”

The Fallow Buck is open to dogs, owners and other customers from 12pm to 11pm seven days a week with food available from 12pm to 9pm Monday to Saturday and 12pm to 8pm on Sundays.

“We have already noticed some distinct drinking habits from our new customer base with English breeds seeming to prefer our selection of traditional ales including Wells Bombardier and Adnams Bitters, whereas the more continental breeds chose the lagers. But they all enjoy a bowl of water!” added Chris. “As well as welcoming new four legged customers, we have introduced live music nights once a month and

continue to host regular quiz nights on a Thursday. We will also be showing the World Cup matches in the “snug bar” and will be running special promotions throughout the tournament.”

In its first four months, the

Dugdale Centre in Thomas Hardy House, London Road, has hosted arts events, film workshops, award presentations, sports and dancing displays.

As Enfield’s newest flexible hire venue, it is fulfilling its potential as a premier location for businesses, promotions, conferences, events and exhibitions.

The venue will host Enfield Antiques Collectors Fair and Enfield Arts Circle Autumn Exhibition in September and October.

Prime advertising space with window and TV screen slots is a new feature taking advantage of the centre’s commanding position at the junction of two busy roads.

Tourism Manager, Eleanor Hunter, says, “The glass façade towers over the busy junction allowing advertisements to be easily seen from buses, passing cars and pedestrians.

“This is an exciting addition to the new facilities, excellent transport links and competitive hire rates that make the Dugdale Centre a first class resource for the community and businesses in Enfield.”

Eleanor will soon be developing the Tourist Information Centre (TIC) which

will be based at the Dugdale Centre, with the help of two young graduate recruits who are being funded through a government work scheme.

They will be trained over four weeks and build on their knowledge of London’s museums theatres and major centres, while also focusing on Enfield’s key attractions and undiscovered treasures.

Neil Rousell, co-director for education, children’s services and leisure, said, “The Dugdale Centre is fast becoming a central venue for the whole borough. Its large main space can be arranged for conferences, performances or presentations. It has the latest lighting and audio equipment and its removable 180 tiered seating is ideal for lectures and staged events.

“This is a place to find out about the borough, hold exhibitions and for businesses to meet. It operates in a totally flexible way offering hall and exhibition space for hire in a great central location. With the addition of the TIC and advertising opportunities it is a complete package for information, ideas and events.”

After 22 years helping people to get a good

nights sleep Vic Smiths Beds is expanding.

Having spoken to Vic & the staff, one thing is very clear they all know that looking after their customers is the most important part off their business.

Vic said “Customer service is the main reason that Vic Smith Beds has gone from strength to strength and is now expanding into dining room furniture alongside their bed & bedroom furniture shops in Southgate. We have always sold dining tables and chairs, sofas & sofa beds from catalogues but now we can let our customers see and try them for themselves“

Vic also strongly believes

in buying British when you can. “Nowadays if you want a new bed, you will get great

value for money and quality by buying British! That’s whether you are buying cheap, middle or top hand made beds. British bed factories employ thousands of British workers up and down the country. So buy British when you can and save British jobs.” Vic added.

Being experts in their field Vic Smith Beds, you would expect them to have won awards and they have won many, and their internet site has been nominated for various awards, they are very clear that it is their customers that make them successful.

An exciting new series of on-line

games is being launched by thebestofenfield.

thebestofgames is an online game series that challenges the people of Enfield Borough to compete against one another in four fun events - Hammer Throw, Bus Pull, VIP Q Jump and Trolley Ball! The idea is to find out who is the best player in Enfield Borough with the overall highest scoring player winning a fantastic pool of prizes.

Local businesses are being invited to sponsor the games represented by their own unique avatars.

People from Enfield and all over the UK now have the opportunity to battle against other players in thebestofenfieldgames to

see if they are good enough to beat the top scores.

Graham Pyle, who runs thebestofenfield says; “This is a unique opportunity for great local businesses to promote themselves to people in Enfield in a very different way. Usually online games like this are associated with brand building for multi-national corporations and big businesses but now we can offer the chance for local businesses to feature and be seen by people in a different way. Added to this we have in-game Facebook Connect and Twitter functions so players can invite and challenge friends and colleagues via social media, this should really increase the exposure for the businesses involved.”

From Tony Blair stating the importance

of education, education, education, to the present coalition government claiming education is one of their key issues, the education of children is for many parents their highest priority. Much media hype has surrounded the fact that a large number of the new government have had the privilege of a private education but this is not within the budgets of many household incomes.

One option for parents concerned about the education and educational standards that their children are receiving is to supplement their schooling with after school educational clubs and lessons. One such organization offering educational and learning support in the EN area is, Kip McGrath.

Kip McGrath was originally launched 30 years ago in Australia and has grown to have over 680 Kip McGrath Education Centres in 20 countries around the world, offering speciality learning programs, which are designed to help everyone develop their potential: from pre-schoolers to university students.

In Enfield the local Kip

McGrath centre is run by Shaaron Kingston with her team, all experienced Primary or Secondary school teachers in England, with full experience of the National Curriculum requirements. They are fully trained in the Kip McGrath teaching methods and, of course, have undergone CRB checks (police checks).

Before setting up her own Kip McGrath Centre, Shaaron had been a teacher at both Primary (teaching primarily year 6) and Secondary (teaching ICT – Information Communications Technology, Business Studies and English) since 1995.

“The Kip McGrath teaching systems we have in place a mixture of technology (computers) and traditional workbooks and worksheets that have shown dramatic improvements in many of our students” Shaaron told us. ”Earlier this year we moved to larger premises in Enfield Town to cater to the demand for places.”

“Initially we invite both potential students and their parents along to carry out an assessment of the pupil’s current abilities in reading, writing, spelling,

comprehension and maths. We then sit with the parents to discuss the areas that the assessment has highlighted for improvement. From this starting point we are able to “tailor make” a program to improve specifically identified areas. We aim to help target the weakness and to show the pupil where they are improving to help them build confidence.”

The initial assessment is free of charge but thereafter sessions last for 1 hour 20 minutes and cost just £25

“Parents get involved if they have the time to. We speak to them after each session to help them understand where their children need help and where the improvements are. This helps to build relationships between parent and child and is useful for the parents to help and encourage both the attending of the session and the homework that is set”

“Many of our pupils often attend extra sessions for a short period of time, for example in the run up to GCSE exams, SATs or if they are sitting entrance papers (11+). By far, the majority of our clients come from referrals – I would say that most parents refer at least one person to us.”

Capel Manor gets heavy!

Capel Manor is calling all lovers of Heavy Horses

to visit the gardens on Sunday 6th June for their annual Herts Heavy Horse Show and Festival of Leathercrafts.

With breed, harness and vehicle parades the show lets you admire a variety of Heavy Horse breeds including Clydesdales, Suffolks and the famous Shires.

The Shire horse holds the record for the world’s biggest horse; Sampson, foaled in 1846 in Toddington Mills, Bedfordshire, England, stood 21.2½ hands high (i.e. 7 ft 2½ in or 2.20 m at his withers) by the time he was a four year old, when he was re-named Mammoth. His peak weight was estimated at over 3,300 lb (approx 1.5 long tons).

Although you may not see any record breakers, it’s a fantastic opportunity to see these magnificent animals in the flesh and support a once struggling breed. Shire horse numbers fell from well over a million to just a few thousand by the 1960s and the breed was in serious trouble. A small group of dedicated breeders came to the rescue and the Shire is seeing a resurgence in popularity both as a working animal and a riding horse.

Alongside these gentle giants, you’ll find craft and rural stands, arena events and dray rides. Saddlery and leatherwork students from Capel Manor College and other establishments, past and present, will also be competing and displaying their work. In addition the Covent Garden Minuet Company will demonstrate 18th Century dancing and costume – complementing the

Cordwainers Company, who will showcase footwear from this period.

Capel Manor’s Herts Heavy Horse Show and Festival of Leathercrafts, Sunday 6th June at Capel Manor Gardens, 10am – 5pm. Activities start at 11am, rosette presentations take place at 4pm.

Admission fees: Adults £5.50, Concessions £4.50, Children £2.50 (5s and under free), Family Ticket £13.50 (2 adults and up to 3 children).

Your Mayor cordially invites you to visit Capel Manor Gardens on Saturday 12 June – for FREE!

As part of their ongoing support of the London

Borough of Enfield, Capel Manor Gardens are once again opening their doors and offering free entry to residents of ENFIELD. Simply take with you a utility bill or item with proof of address on to the OPEN DAY on Saturday 12th June and 30 acres of Capel’s colourful and scented gardens are yours to explore… for FREE!

If you have just got your copy of EN Magazine and

are reading this article you may not be aware that this week is Volunteers’ Week from the 1st -7th June.

Volunteers’ Week is an annual event, which celebrates the fantastic contribution that millions of volunteers make across the UK. The week plays a huge part in raising the profile of the millions of people who regularly donate their time and effort, whilst inspiring others to get involved too.

To highlight the volunteers’ important role in society, there is a burst of activity during this week, from the public & private voluntary sectors;

opportunities are offered for all who value volunteers to celebrate with parties and award ceremonies to

give thanks but also highlight the worthwhile work being done, whilst individuals are encouraged to use the time to find out more about volunteering.

Volunteering England is an independent charity and membership organization, committed to supporting, enabling and celebrating volunteering in all its diversity. Members are drawn from the public, private and volunteering sectors including national charities, NHS Trusts, arts & sports’ organizations and local community projects.

Dr. Justin Davis Smith, CEO of Volunteering England has over 20 years experience in

the volunteering movement and cannot overstate enough how important to our society the contribution of volunteers is. “From the most local neighbourhood project to our essential public services, volunteers play a critical role, championing, cajoling, campaigning, collaborating and generally making things work better; improving and enriching the lives of individuals and communities”.

To that end, in 2010, Volunteering England is calling for more adult volunteers to help with children and young people across Britain to take part in organized activities. Without the help of adults, organizations such as Scouts, Girl Guides and St. John’s Ambulance, could not function; grass root football, rugby and cricket games are also almost entirely supported by volunteers, without whom the next generation of sporting talent would remain largely

undiscovered.

Volunteering England wants every child and young person to be able to fulfil their potential and take part in fun, rewarding activities, not rely on false support systems such as gangs, drugs and alcohol addictions but to enable this dream, they need adult volunteers to be inspired and more involved.

If you would like to enthuse and encourage others to reach their goals or learn more about Volunteers’ Week, why not contact Volunteering England today on 020 7520 8965 or visit www.volunteeringengland.org.uk

The Nightingale Community Hospice

Trust offers services to support people in the Borough of Enfield whose lives have been affected by cancer. There are currently about 470 clients, all with individual needs, receiving our help.

The Nightingale does not receive any statutory funding and therefore it is vital that staff costs are kept to a minimum. Only four

members of staff are employed and they are only able to

deliver the services because of the large team of volunteers (currently over 150), who use their skills and abilities in a number of ways. Without volunteers the organisation would not be viable. Services to clients currently have 325 volunteers working hours. If these people were paid as staff earning only the basic minimum wage the wages bill would be £1,885 way beyond the means of a small local charity. Likewise in fundraising

there are currently 425 volunteers willing to give their time, equivalent to a wage bill of £2,520.

Volunteers help in a wide variety of ways, some help with admin in the Client Services or Fundraising office. Others make tea and chat with clients and carers at the Drop-in sessions, provide transport or befriend people in their own homes. Fundraising events are always very busy and need lots of helpers, also many pairs of hands are necessary to prepare and distribute the Newsletter and other advertising material which helps us to promote the services we provide and the events we run.

The Nightingale’s latest exciting development has been the opening of their first Charity Shop at 188 Baker Street, Enfield. Here again the shop will rely on volunteers to work alongside the shop

manager. 36 volunteers are needed to staff the shop each week and to support this very exciting venture.

Volunteers are a vital part of our organisation. Could you spare any time to help this excellent local charity? If you are interested in volunteering to help the Nightingale in any way, please contact Mary Rose on 020 8366 9674.

HELP URGENTLY NEEDED!!Can you help the

Nightingale to make our Summer Fair a great success? We are urgently in need of raffle prizes, bottles of alcohol, tombola prizes, in fact any items that we can use to help maximise the income from our Summer Fair. Can you help us to support local people who are living with cancer? Any donations you can make will be really appreciated. These families are inspirational – be inspiredA thought provoking statement? Yes. In these challenging times, as many of us tighten our belts and day-to-day living costs continue to increase, charities like Noah’s Ark Children’s Hospice who are currently working with over 90 families of life-limited children in the communities of South Hertfordshire and North London,

could suffer as a result. You have only to read the national press to learn that a reduction in regular giving and donations is having an affect on the work of small charities.

Whilst it is difficult to predict what will happen in the coming year, or when the economy might return to pre-recession levels, the focus underpinning the service development at Noah’s Ark continues to be about helping

more families, more often.

Funding from Children In Need and other grants and trusts arrives in instalments throughout the year, but it is not enough without extra donations, which come in the form of regular giving and one-off donations

from individuals and corporate supporters. With the continued generosity of its supporters, Noah’s Ark has been able to make a significant difference to many families they support through Respite Play and the Family

Support Volunteers Scheme.

The value of all this support cannot be underestimated and expanding its capacity is a priority for the charity in 2010.

There are many examples of how giving can make a difference. To illustrate this, a donation of £25 could help a life-limited child receive an hour of loving time from a respite nursery nurse or play specialist; £100 could go towards creating a long lasting precious memory for a family with a life-limited child; £750 could provide five days of care from a respite nursery nurse; £1,500 could provide a purpose built trike for a life-limited child and £10,000 could cover the cost of family fun days and volunteer training for one year. Diane Parry added, “The repercussion of giving to a smaller charity like Noah’s Ark can have a major impact – adding life to days

where we cannot add days to life”.

Noah’s Ark’s fundamental belief is that a children’s hospice service has to be one which is flexible and which truly responds to the needs of the children and families. Now more so than ever, this approach is reflected in the charity’s approach to its work with individual and corporate supporters. By keeping an open mind, and adapting to the changing needs and situations of its supporters, Noah’s Ark is confident it can continue to provide its services for local families, whilst constantly focusing and reviewing these against the level of

financial support it receives.

It is for this reason that the charity is asking individuals and the business community in the EN area to think twice before considering a reduction or cessation in voluntary giving. “The repercussions of a significant drop in donations could be huge for a small, local charity such as Noah’s Ark. There are an estimated 350

life-limited children and their families living in our area. A regular gift to Noah’s Ark helps to sustain a much needed service for those who do not have the gift of time. We need to provide the help now”, Fundraising

Development Manager, Diane Parry said.

“Our families are amazing, full of courage and stamina, and we believe in helping them to make every precious moment count. We will always argue that just because a life is limited, it shouldn’t limit the

right to a quality of life”.

We are all lead to believe that a

recessionary market is a bad thing and that we should all be thankful for the job we have and put every effort into keeping it. A recessionary market, like every other market is simply a time of change that in turn brings about a host of opportunities for those who are tuned in.

The trouble with the plethora of negative media associated with any kind of downturn is that people start believing that it’s true which can lead to a general lack of confidence that just prolongs the period of change. My advice to anyone finding themselves at a crossroads in their lives is, skill up and try something new!

What makes you happy?

Before putting all of your energies into protecting a job or business that you already have, try asking yourself, are you actually doing what you really want to do? What kind of people or enterprise do you want to be involved with now and/or in five years time? Where and what sparks your energy levels to rise and what drags it down? Review your life and your work within that context. Where are you most satisfied and where are you unsettled and unhappy?

Try being completely honest with yourself and you will find that there is always a way to improve things. Too frequently our lives take turns

that we didn’t expect and we find ourselves years later in a well-paid job doing something that we never intended to do. Look back at your original aspirations and talents and see if there is anything that you could resurrect.

If things are particularly difficult because your skills or the products you sell don’t seem to be as marketable as they once were, look to see how you could adapt your core activities and skill base to attract new, complimentary and emerging markets. For example, if you sell conservatories you might like to also sell windows, doors, guttering or solar panels. The core activity is similar, you simply require a period of learning and adaptation.

Be realistic about your finances. Money is so often a hurdle to overcome, so really try to evaluate whether you gain value from every penny you currently spend. Check whether you have the space to explore new territories, sabbaticals

or training that may affect your income or actually cost you money. Where can you make changes to reduce overheads to provide more space to explore? Are there government grants or assistance available? Where are you unwilling or unable to negotiate on giving something up?

Be open to a change in your life

When you are feeling under pressure it can be difficult to embrace new experiences and relationships and yet this is so often the key to a new opportunity. Try to treat every new telephone conversation, dinner party and kids’ soccer match as an opportunity to meet someone who may help you change your life for the better. Trust that every opportunity has meaning, even though you may not know what it is right now. These opportunities will enable you to meet new people, entertain different ideas and develop new skills or use existing ones in a new context.

If you are one of the many people who left their textbooks at their last point of full time education vowing never to return – think again! You have been learning from the day you were born and will continue to do so throughout your life. You are never too old to acquire a new skill, you just might not be brave enough! If the worst you can do is fail then you will be no worse off than you are today. Learning new skills is always refreshing and can lead to an experience of personal renewal. Redefine yourself as a lifelong learner. With this new approach to life you can read, network, explore and embrace the opportunity to learn how to reinvent yourself.

Review your life now. Be curious. Seek to understand and try not to judge yourself or others. Reassure yourself that it’s okay to not know exactly what the future may hold and try to take the pressure off always having to get it right.

If you set yourself some new goals and priorities that genuinely interest and excite you, you will find that your life begins a new natural momentum. Try to avoid over-analysing things, take time to enjoy the company of friends and family, appreciating what you have around you. In no time you will find that you have a clearer or newer sense of direction and possibly even some excitement!

A young entrepreneur from Enfield has

scooped a national award after setting up a business that provides a digital ticketing solution for niche entertainment event organisers. Shoobs.com enables event organisers of all sizes to set up an online ticket http://shoobs.com/ ing, promotion and a social media platform to connect people to London’s most vibrant and hippest events.

Louise Broni-Mensah, was selected by a panel of judges and the public to be a Shell LiveWIRE Grand Ideas Award winner and worthy of £1,000 funding. Louise from Enfield went to Enfield County Girls School before working in the banking industry. After being made redundant and traveling

for a while Louise found that she was unable to find out about nights out and places to go in the area. She realized there are limited ways for smaller events to promote and sell tickets to the public.

“I was frustrated at the inefficient selling process faced by smaller event organisers, and set up Shoobs.com as my solution to make professional ticketing accessible to all organisers, regardless of size.” Louise told EN Magazine “The niche event market includes nightclubs and small gigs, which has largely been ignored by the ticketing industry, with players such as Ticketmaster focusing on the large events. Shoobs.com embraces these smaller events and provides a refreshing, innovative and connected approach to online

ticketing.”

“The website is predominantly aimed at young trendy 18-34 year olds who want to go out to trendy places. The audience are internet and text savvy and use the web and social media to find out what is going on and where and Shoobs.com fills the gap in allowing them to get tickets for events and gigs. I already have plans for expansion to include other cities outside the south east and to include ticketing for small venues including theaters.”

Her frustration was felt by Tim Campbell, the first winner of the BBC’s Apprentice, who provided financial investment in the business through the Bright Ideas Trust.

Event organisers can set

up a profile ticketing page on a unique web address and customize their ticket event pages with pictures, video and audio to bring their events to life. Shoobs provides access to intelligent data and reports to enable event organisers to keep track of their sales and build

their contact database. The service is completely free for event organisers, whilst Shoobs adds a small booking fee on top of the face value of the ticket.

Louise has also received support from the Enfield Enterprise’s Start Now Programme, where she received expert advice from business advisors and attended a number of business seminars.

Louise added “With growing youth unemployment and economic unrest, it may seem that there are little opportunities for today’s young generation. However, I encourage those with a business idea to take the plunge and go at it alone! Programmes like the Bright Ideas Trust, Shell LiveWire and StartNow can help you turn your business idea into reality. The financial boost of winning a Grand Ideas Award has been a huge help and will enable me to further develop Shoobs.com, but in the long run, it’s the credibility of winning an award like this that really makes a difference.”

The rhetoric about safety and security shows no sign of abating.

Nor do assurances that stadiums will be completed on time and easily accessible, transport links will be fine and most if not all remaining tickets will be snapped up by the big kickoff.

Never before has a World Cup been dominated by as much debate about organisation, infrastructure and the ability to cope as South Africa 2010. But then never before has a World Cup been staged on the African Continent.

Pretty soon the talking will stop, replaced by the acid test of whether South Africa can really pull it off and stage a tournament, off the pitch as much as on it, of which the world can be proud. It’s a tough ask. Sepp Blatter, the president of Fifa, knows it and so does Danny Jordaan, organising committee ceo and the public face of the World Cup who, for the best part of six years, has spoken at every

imaginable public forum to promote the tournament. The fact that the pair of them appear so defensive about the upcoming jamboree reflects a mood of anxiety that just won’t go away, however hard the organisers try to accentuate the positive rather than South Africa’s notorious crime rate.

Among the most sympathetic supporters of South Africa 2010 is the former Tottenham Hotspur captain Gary Mabbutt who spends a good deal of time in the country. Gary recently came to Enfield as host of one of the Spurs Legends evenings that are becoming must-see events in the borough. He believes there is too much negativity about the World Cup. “When South Africa were pulled out of the envelope and announced to the world as host nation, there was a lot of negativity and pessimism that Africa couldn’t and wouldn’t do it,” says Gary. “I would say that six years down the road, a lot of those feelings have been put to one side. What people fail to appreciate is that South Africa is doing it 15 years after becoming a democracy. What the country has achieved in that time is absolutely phenomenal. Of course there are risks but 9 million tourists go there every year and there are very few horror stories.”

Debate is intensifying in pubs and homes across the country in terms of who ends up winning the month-long tournament that starts on June 11. European champions Spain and five-time World Cup winners Brazil are the outright favourites and understandably so given the depth of talent in their respective

squads. But Brazil are more likely to win on home soil in four years’ time and not many teams win European and World titles back to back. So can England squeeze in the back door and bring the World Cup home for the first time since 1966? Before every major tournament England’s refrain is the same: we really can win it this time. To be fair, a superb qualifying campaign, the prodigious form of Wayne Rooney and perfect weather conditions in South Africa have given England genuine hope.

Manager Fabio Capello, the Alf Ramsey of his generation, has certainly restored self-belief and will hope that negative headlines involving the likes of John Terry and Ashley Cole will not overshadow the job in hand. Injuries to key players have added to Capello’s problems but despite those setbacks England’s prospects remain strong - provided Rooney can carry his domestic form into the finals. If he does, we could finally bury two generations of false hope and disappointment and emulate the heroes of 1966. But it’s a big “if”. Striking back-up to Rooney remains a major concern. Don’t just take my word for it. “In our day if either Roger Hunt or I wasn’t playing we had Jimmy Greaves,” says Geoff Hurst, hat-trick hero of that memorable 1966 final against West Germany. “If Rooney is out we are a bit light. We aren’t quite blessed with real depth up front. On the other hand, while you can’t possibly envisage England

Will 44 years of hurt come to an end in

winning the World Cup without Rooney, we did it without Jimmy. They

key thing for us was team spirit and camaraderie and Capello has done much

the same.”

The goalkeeping situation is another area where doubts persist. In years gone by England had one - or even two - obvious contenders for the position. Now it’s a question of selecting the best of a decent but certainly not outstanding bunch since the best keepers in the Premiership are invariably foreign. Paul Robinson, the former Spurs man, has been mysteriously omitted by Capello who promised to pick players on form yet overlooked the Blackburn keeper. David James is vastly experienced, sensational on his day but still prone to lapses of concentration; Robert Green is untested at the highest level while Joe Hart is hugely talented yet a novice on the international stage.

Matches will be staged at 10 stadiums with teams separated into eight groups of four. England have been handed a relatively trouble-free group - on paper at least - longside the USA, Slovenia and Algeria but then it gets more difficult.

So who am I going for? I genuinely think England have a strong chance if Spain and Brazil are below-par. The French are still locked in mediocrity, Argentina has the players - not least Lionel Messi - but could shoot themselves in the foot

with Diego Maradona in charge. Germany will be a challenge for anyone, as they always are, and reigning champions Italy will not give up their title lightly. Watch Holland and Didier Drogba’s Ivory Coast, both dangerous floaters. Two things I CAN

promise you - plenty of drama on the field and heaps of colour off it.

Andrew Warshaw is an Enfield-based football journalist who will be attending his eighth World Cup.

“Right, from tomorrow I am going to start a diet, cut out junk food, lose weight and get fit”.

If I lost a pound for every time I have said this to myself and lasted no more than a couple of days, I would probably need to put weight on, not lose it!

So why is it that some people can lose weight? But not me! More

realistically why can my brother eat a meal and two desserts and lose weight but I only have to look at a pudding and the weight appears to pile on?

With the sun finally putting in an appearance and the big jumpers being relegated to the top shelf and T-shirts replacing them for summer. The need to look good is back again and yes I have

bought into the stereotype and for me looking goods means slim.

So what are the options? I know that telling myself and being healthy, eating my five a day fruit and vegetables, will only last a few days and then the chocolate bars or packets of crisps will get the better of me, so what can I try?

It is a fact that the word “exercise” still remains a dirty word for many but it is a proven fact that someone who wants to lose weight, should aim for 30 minutes of moderate

exercise, five days per week such as walking, cycling or even gardening! It is also generally agreed that successful weight loss is usually sustained by combining dietary, psychological and exercise programmes and being supported by a group of like-minded people can be a major help. However there is no getting away from it exercise is GOOD.

We’ve probably all walked past our local gym or checked out the adverts and thought, I really must go and enquire about joining. However we then come up with any old excuse not to do so. If you do defy lethargy and actually make it through the door there is a world of exercise that can be tailored to your requirements such as classes, machines, pools and poles (yes pole dancing is a legitimate exercise).

One of the latest crazes which I am told works well for people with busy lives or those that do not want to spend much time in the gym are Power Plates, on which it is claimed you can achieve the equivalent of 60 minutes exercise in 10 minutes!

Vibration training is an exciting development in the health and fitness industry and benefits all ages and fitness levels and more importantly uses almost 100% of a body’s muscle. A user changes position repeatedly to work different muscle groups and some machines also have stretching and massaging routines. The machine itself does not improve

your overall strength or aerobic exercise capacity but IT DOES TONE! Add this to a cardio routine to burn calories and you’re on your way to the body of your dreams.

How good are these machines? Well, they were originally designed in the 1960s by Russian scientist Vladimir Narzarov for Cosmonauts who used it to prevent muscle and bone wastage in space – It

must of worked because Russians still hold the world record for staying in space 240 days!

In addition, Olympic trainer Guus Van der Meer, developed the machine further for the fitness sector in 1999 under the brand name “Power Plate”. If it’s good enough for Olympic trainees, I’m thinking it’s got to be good for the likes me.

Top UK doctors have revealed surprising weight loss ‘secrets’ recently, stating you do not have to cut your calorific intake necessarily to lose pounds.

“By actively monitoring calorie expenditure as well as calorie intake, it’s possible to lose weight without feeling hungry and to focus on strengthening muscles and building stamina at the same time. By concentrating on these factors, as well as your psychological relationship with food, it is possible to lose weight much more easily and to do so in a safer and more effective way,” says Mr. Christopher Pring, Consultant Upper GI, Laparoscopic & Bariatric surgeon at Spire Gatwick Park Hospital, one of the UK’s leading private hospitals and is a leader in the area of weight management.

In other words, if you aim to expend 500kcal more than you take in each day, losing 1-2lbs per week is achievable and realistic. So not everything you love has to end up in the waste bin or labelled “for the thin people of the house only” but

“you do not have to cut your calorific intake lose

pounds”

Page 22: EN Magazine June 2010

22

do remember healthy is still better, so try and mix your indulgences with more fruit, vegetables and salad.

Mr. Christopher Pring’s top tips include:

30 minutes of intense activity (whatever floats your boat) five days a week

Do not snack between meals

Check the calories on food labels, as many “light” products are actually full of calories

Try to join a support group – it’s easier to share the ‘fight’ with others

Track your calorie intake and usage; for example if you are attending a big dinner party, to balance your intake make sure you fit in some extra exercise to balance the calories out.

Now you may think that this is all common sense but weight gain can also be due to underlying emotional issues. There is usually a bit more to a weight problem than simply ‘eating too much’ Learning to distinguish between physical and emotional hunger is absolutely key to staying slim and understanding why you overeat will mean that you are less likely to return to old habits when you have achieved your desired weight.

A recent survey by weight-loss management specialists, Lighter Life, revealed that more than a third of women on a diet are ‘secret scoffers’; a massive 7 million of the nation’s ladies apparently watching their waistlines, are hiding food or eating in secret.

Heather Newham, Lighterlife counsellor for Enfield & Waltham Abbey lists some of the reasons people give for losing weight:

Improve their sex lifeImprove their confidenceBe able to look in the mirrorWant to feature in photographsTo enjoy swimming Not to be asked if they’re pregnantWalk 10 miles rather than 10 stepsCome off medicationPlay sports/games with the kidsBuy clothes from High street stores

“Many of our clients can identify with several of these statements and when they join LigherLife they want to put their weight issues and all these negative comments behind them as quickly as possible”.

LighterLife has helped clients lose almost 100,000 stone (equivalent to the weight of 600 family cars), so far this year using a VLCD method (very low calorie diet), that has proven to be very effective at tackling obesity and high cholesterol. LighterLife challenge and encourage people to help themselves and make them understand that they are not alone. For further information about LighterLife call Heather Newham on 020 83664443 or visitwww.lighterlife.com.

Pat Cooper local distributor of Herbalife products also emphasises the benefits of exercise. Her top tips for losing weight are:

The correct amount of protein will stop you feeling hungry and will ensure that you shape up as you lose the weight – no saggy bits – by ensuring you only lose fat, and not lean muscle tissue.

Drinking 2 litres of water per day will keep your metabolism revved up and quell hunger pangs, as will green tea, whereas normal tea and coffee will dehydrate you and slow down your metabolism, making it harder to lose the weight.

Don’t drop your calorie intake below 1200 calories for a woman, 1500 for a man. If you do, you slow down your metabolic rate, as your body thinks it’s heading for a famine, and then you wont burn off the calories.

Step up your metabolism by exercising www.slimmingworld.com0844 897 8000*when you buy a 12 week Countdown course 24 May to 12 June

for 30 minutes daily – even brisk walking will be good – you increase muscle, which burns off more calories and helps to lose weight.

Herbalife products are not available in shops – because the distributors work closely with customers to tailor their program based on their BMI and to motivate and encourage them to make sure they get the result they want, with the support and initial consultation carried out for free.

Doctors at Herbalife, research all of their products and conduct clinical trials, and are involved at the highest level in the obesity issues around the world – this year sponsoring and presenting at a Global Nutrition Conference that focussed on obesity prevention in both adults and children.

Herbalife products enable you to slim down without feeling hungry - and to have more energy while you are losing the weight. A Herbalife Formula 1 shake has more calcium than 6-ounces of plain yogurt, more protein than a roasted chicken thigh, more vitamin A than a mango, more vitamin C than a banana,

more fibre than a half-cup of broccoli and as much iron as a half cup of black beans. Fresh or frozen fruit added to the shakes offer even more vitamins and minerals as well as fibre. For further information about Herbalife call Pat Cooper on 0208 245 3856 orwww.being-well.co.uk

Reluctant you may be when you start a weight loss regime but once you start seeing results, there’s nothing better. Think about it today and give it a go tomorrow.

Ant and Dick are the cheeky chappies who know everything

there is to know about putting your wedding together. They have been planning weddings and events for many years. They have appeared on many TV shows, from Richard & Judy to a week’s residency on Ireland Am. They have been seen live on stage at the National Wedding show in London and Birmingham, as well as hosting the biggest wedding show in Northern Ireland, The Wedding Extravaganza. They write for

White Wedding Pages Magazine and manage several smaller wedding shows in Northern Ireland. We have persuaded them to give us the benefit of their advice, give you some hints and tips and answer a few you’re wedding planning problems.

The bridal gown is perhaps the most important decision in the wedding planning process; follow this advice when shopping for a gown and you will get the look that’s right for you and the most

flattering.

For women that have an hourglass shape, a strapless or off-the-shoulder gown is just right. When shopping for a strapless gown, lean towards the one-piece gowns instead of two-piece gowns. A two-piece gown can result in splitting you into two figures. Bias-cut and straight designs are not best for hourglass figures. They will usually pull the eye to areas of the body that you want to minimize. These types of dresses are better suited for tall women. The bride with an hourglass shape will want

to accentuate her curves. Avoid heavily beaded dresses that can tend to make the bride appear heavier.

Women with a pear shaped figure have smaller shoulders and upper body than lower body. A pear shaped bride should wear shoulder pads or puffy sleeves. This bride should avoid any type of body hugging gown, full skirts, or cuts that make the upper body appear even smaller or the lower body larger

If you have a short and petite figure, there are many options. Shoestring straps and off-the-shoulder gowns will work the best. A Cinderella gown will look beautiful and will add a touch of romance. Straight gowns tend to not look as nice on a short and petite figure. If you have already fallen in love with a straight wedding gown, offset it with a full veil. Wearing the right shoes can also add height if a petite bride would like to appear taller. Keep in mind, however, that you may not want to be in high heels all night. Switching shoes will affect the way your dress hits the floor, keep that in mind when selecting your gown.

The ideal gown for a bride with a square shape will be one that creates curves, or, create the illusion of curves. The neckline of the dress should be beaded, or the upper part of the bodice should be beaded. Bigger skirts and sleeves are also ways to add curves. The square figured bride should avoid sheath or clingy dresses that contribute nothing to the illusion of creating curves.

No wedding is complete without a groom right? Don’t worry we never forget the groom. So here is some advice on how to survive the planning process and look good and feel relaxed on the day.

Start planning early. The earlier you figure out the style of wedding suit you are looking for, the sooner you can put down a deposit. Booking in advance often gets you a nice discount, and if your hiring with the rest of the groomsmen with Moss Bros or Young’s, you should get the Grooms outfit for free.

Make sure you involve your bride. No matter what we believe about equality of the sexes, your wedding day is really about your bride. Your job is to treat her to the fairytale princess fantasy that she’s been dreaming of since she was eight, as long as your budget allows it. Pick your battles wisely, remembering that every concession you make at this stage of the relationship pays off threefold in the honeymoon suite.

Go online or bring photos you have

collected online to your local suit hire company or tailor. Even if your not comfortable purchasing clothes online, do your homework about designers and retailers and choose one that reflects your style.

Your groomsmen have to buy or rent their own outfits. So, keep it real. Find a price point that works for all the guys on your list. Even if they really want to be a part of your special day, one of your groomsmen might have to turn down your offer if moneys tight. Thats why its so important to look for the best possible deal.

Dont suck in that gut. You are not trying to escape from a trap like Harry Houdini. Your tailor has the skill to make you look superb no matter what shape your body is in. Let the real you hang out during your fitting sessions. If you are holding something in, the bulges in your jacket will betray you on your wedding day.

Micromanage your the ushers. One of the most common causes of wedding stress for grooms is the tendency for at least one of the groomsmen to lose track of their schedule, miss their suit fittings, or even fail to pick up their wedding day attire. Keep a timetable of important deadlines that gives you a day or two of extra wiggle room if you need it. Then, connect with your tailor or your suit hire shop to make sure your guys are all on track. Dont wait

for catastrophe to strike on your wedding day!

Pay close attention to the details, especially as you get closer to your wedding day. Remember that your special event will be as well documented and as scrutinized as any reality tv show, so stay on top of the little things. As girly as it sounds, treating yourself to a simple manicure a day or two before the wedding will make your hands look good and keep your nails from catching on your suit or her gown. Take your wedding shoes to a professional shoe shine for a flawless shoeshine. And purchase a lint roller just for the occasion.

Enjoy how great you look. Your wedding day is one of the few times in your life where you’ll be looking fabulous in front of a large group of people. Your wedding suit is not just there for the sake of tradition, though. Work it! Learn to graciously accept compliments, and revel in the amazement at how well you cleaned up. If you need any other validation, just check the expression on your brides face. If she cant figure out whether she wants your clothes off or on, your tailor did an excellent job.

From all the planning we have done over the years, and the questions Brides are always asking us we have created the following Top Ten Tips.

1. Book the venue well in advance

2. Do not buy the first dress that looks nice on you and don’t go dress shopping

too early!! The chances are temperature changes, weight loss or gain and theme may vary a few times before the final decisions are made

3. If you have a regular hairdresser try

to ensure they do your hair for the big day as the trust will be greater, they know your style and hair etc.

4. Do not get caught up in etiquette etc. This is your day, you decide the orders!!

5. Don’t be pressured into having people as guests that you don’t want, be polite but firm!!

6. If arriving in a classic car or by horse and carriage ensure plenty of time is allocated for mishaps it is better to circle the block a few times rather than miss your ceremony... time slots are often very tight!!

7. DELEGATE!!! The pressure of planning a wedding is immense!! Ensure you have a team of trustworthy people at the helm!!

8. Plan stag and hen nights for about a month before the big day!! Practical jokes or accidents do happen!!!

9. Never accept the first price offered for goods or services, they expect you to bargain!!

10. If planning an outdoor wedding have a contingency plan for weather changes!

We have tried to give you a good start to planning your very special day, but there are many more things you have to think about. If you would like more help in planning your day, you can email us, or just go to our website where we have lots more advice www.antanddick.com – Remember enjoy your day, don’t let the planning get to you or take over.

Good Luck Ant and Dick. X x x
