Trees on the move

Streetlife has gained extensive experience in professional

tree planters and Treetec® care systems over many years of close

partnershipwithleadingtreespecialists.Itscontemporaryand

innovative solutions continue the centuries-old tradition of

the Orangery and Hortus Botanicus Amsterdam in terms of both

aestheticsandtechniques.Theoptimumcareandnurtureof

thetreesarethecentralelementsofthisdevelopment.

Arguments to place trees in tree tubs are:

• Shortageofsufficientundergroundspace,asisthecasewith

underground car parks, roof gardens, underground services,

andhighgroundwaterlevels.

• Itisaninterestingandsympatheticwayofstructuringand

designingurbanspace.

• Itallowsagreatdegreeofflexibleandmultifunctionaluse.

Movablelargetreesdonotrequiretree-fellingpermission.

• Forsafetyreasons,importantbuildingscanbeequippedwith

atreetubvariantofaroadblock.

Streetlife’s new collection includes various tree planters and other

solutions for green roof terraces in addition to its products for

publicurbanspaces.Ultra-lightweighttreeplanters–withor

Treetec® BasicTreetec® Basic is a basic care kit for ensuring healthy growth in

treeplanters.Thekitconsistsofanoxygencirculationsystem,

Tree Tub Technology Yearsofresearchandexperiencewithcountlessurbanprojects

have resulted in the Treetec® system which is applied in

Streetlife’streetubs.Streetlifecollaborateswithalliancepartner

BSIBomenserviceBVinprojectsinvolvingsustainableandurban

greenery.TheTreetec® treecare system enables trees in tree tubs

todevelopproperly.Inthisway,youcanapplysustainable

greenery and urban trees at any urban location, building, parking

decks,viaductorroofterrace.

The Treetec® wall constructionensuressufficientthermal

insulationandpreventsdamagingvariationsintemperature.

Aswellaswater,treesalsorequireasufficientsupplyofoxygento

theirroots.TheTreetec® wall construction ensures oxygen

circulationaroundtherootballontheinsideofthetub.

EachStreetlifetreetubhasfacilitiestofixsmallandlargeroot

ballsinthetreetub.Treetec® root ball guying are supplied as

standard.Thisinvisibleroot ball anchoring prevents any

lop-sidedgrowthofthetree.

Every Streetlife tree tub is designed in such a way that the tub and

the tree are easily relocated.Dependingonthesizeofthetree

tub, this may be done with a fork-lift truck or with a crane

(withstandardcounterweightsorhoistingbandset).Oneshould

calculatefor1700kgperm3withadampsubstrate.

Trees in tubs require a measured composition of the substrate.

We have had success using a compound of potting compost and

sandsupplementedwithadditives.Werecommendusingground

covering,e.g.ivymattingortreegrids.Greengroundcovering

creates an aesthetically appealing effect, insulates the soil’s top

surface, and prevents it from drying out and dirt from

accumulating.

Compact urban spaces are in increasing need of sustainable

shrubberyandlandscapingondeckpatiosandroofs.However,

these structures are often limited to a maximum uniformly

distributedloadof500kg/m².Usinglightweightdeckingand

plantersfilledwithalow-densitysubstratesubstrateprovidesan

affordableandsustainablewaytoplanttreesonroofs.High-rise

buildingsaresubjecttohighwindloads.Oncetreetypesand

planters have been selected, Streetlife can provide advice about

wind load calculations based on statistical assumptions for

varioustreetypes.

Treetec® Basic and Treetec®BottomUparestandardizedtreecare

systems that can be integrated with Streetlife’s range of

professionaltreeplanters.Treetec® systems ensure adequate

insulation,oxygencirculation,rootballfixing,irrigationand

excesswaterdrainage.CapillarytubesintheTreetec® kit provide

improvedwatercirculationthatsignificantlyreducesthefrequency

with which watering and maintenance are required in the growing

season.

Streetlifeisspecializedinrealizinglargetreeislands.Hardurban

sitesareconvertedintopleasantplacestositandrelax.

The‘greenexperience’ofthecitizensisintensifiedinasimple

way.Itisagreeabletorelaxonthecurvedsittingedge;afterall,

everyoneenjoyssittingunderatree.

Years of experience have given rise to a Tree Isle system, in which

theclientcanadapttheformtotherequirements.

The CorTen wallshaveawarmallure.Thesustainablerust-forming

discouragesgraffitiandstickers.TheIslescanbeattractively

incorporated into the street paving by means of a permeable

rubberjointseveralcentimetreswide.Theintegrationofbenches

and wastepaper bins means no loose layout elements around the

Isle,whichgivesaneatappearanceandsimplifiesmaintenance.

CorTen steel edging is supported on base plates generally

positioned15cmbelowgroundlevel.Thewallsarelightweight

andtheshallowfoundationpreventsdamagetoexistingroots.

Thedepthorheightofthewallsmaybeadjusteddependingon

theelevationoftheground-levelpackageonaconcretedeck.

The R&R sitting edgeisintegratedintothesteel.Inthecaseof

curved sitting edges, the minimum outer radius is 3 metres and

thesittingwidth40,50or60cm.Thehardwoodbeamsprotrude

around5cmabovethesteel.Theyareinvisiblymountedandare

easytoreplace.Torealizeanevenseatheightof45to47cm,

theground-leveldrainageslopeshouldbelimited.

The Isles are often equipped with a tree substratum that is applied

inaslightlyconcavemanner.Streetlifeadvisestheuseof ground

creepers(suchasivyforexample)inmatformonthesubstratum.

Thisintensifiesthegreenexperience,andreducesmaintenance

aswellastheaccumulationofwaste.

With large trees, it may be necessary to have root ball anchorage.

The Tree Isles can be equipped with this type of integral

constructionifnecessary.

Le Corbusier Water Isle

TheNotreDameduHautchapelinRonchamp(France)–designed

bythefamousFranco-SwissarchitectLeCorbusier–isboth

asourceofinspirationandanartisticreference.Thechapelwas

builtbetween1950and1955,andformsamagnificent,sculptural

concrete structure that attracts both architecture and landscape

loversalike.

A concave, sloping concrete roof covers the entire chapel that

drainsatacentralpointviaaprotrudingspout.Rainwaterarcs

downintoamodernistdesignisleconstructedinunfinished

concrete.Theisleactsasanoverflowbasinfromwhichwaterflows

tosurroundingareas.

Streetlife’s Seating and Tree Isles form

unique landscaping elements that can be

used simply and effectively to create

anextremelypleasantoutdoorambience.

Functionallycombiningseatingand

shrubbery.Accordingtostudiesperformed

inDelft(Netherlands),suchelementshave

beenshowntohaveasignificanteffecton

increasing the time spent in, and improving

perceptionsabout,theseoutdoorspaces.

CorTen Steel

A warm and natural image is created with the application of CorTen

steelinpublicspace.CorTencanbeapplieduntreatedinoutdoor

spaces,sothatenvironment-unfriendlyzinclayersandchemical

paintlayerscanbeavoided.

CorTen is a low-alloy steel with a chrome, copper and nickel

additiveonwhichadenseandfirmrustlayerforms.Theairand

watertight patina is formed within six months and the steel does

notrustanyfurther.

StreetlifesuppliesvariousproductsinCorTen.Besidesthewarm

allure, CorTen has a number of other advantages:

environment-friendly,littletroublefromstickersandgraffiti,

lively change of colour from orange and brown, any repairs and

adjustmentstotheCorTenconstructionbecomeinvisiblein

thecourseoftime,duetothenaturalrustingprocess.

The Angel of the North, made entirely of CorTen steel,

isalandmarknearNewcastleinthenorthofEngland.TheCorTen

constructionis20metrestallandthewingsare54metreswide.

Long and Big Green Benches are innovative approaches to

These benches are extremely robust, but can still be moved
