Hello IPSFers all around the region,

It's my pleasure to introduce this special "colorful" issue of IPSF EMRO newsletters, I

think you'll guess what's inside it from the title!

The idea of "What's up EMRO!" began when we IPSF EMRO RWG decided to

brand all our issues to be series of newsletters, as we previously issued our first

    newsletter's brand "EMROs Flying!".

In this issue you will find news and updates from the most of our associations in the

region, you'll find an article about the Tunisian association which has a colorful

vision of life. In Egypt, An EPSFer has an imaginary amazing interview with a reporter

about this year achievements and future strategy. Our Sudanese friends wrote about

their association's recent and future activities. The Iranian students' introduced their

association activities and the Executives. We received an article from Kuwaiti

students who did a lot of activities which are really numerous. Also Qatar society

wrote about its Breast cancer campaign plus their future plans.

Your continuous activities in your associations always assure that the pharmacy

profession has a bright future! As pharmacy students we are the future, so lets

make the future better together! Who will if not us, when will it be if not now?

I'd like to thank everyone who contributed by an article or effort to make this issue

    sees the light.

Let me invite you to join our Facebook group to get all our recent news and issues,

    plus all EMPS 2011 updates.

Wishing you a good time reading the newsletter!

    Greetings from beloved Egypt

ATEPAssociation Tunisienne des Etudiants en Pharmacie

    Dear friends,

Today, Im going to tell you about a dear friend of

mine. Her name is ATEP. She is 26 years old and the

one and only of her kind. She is from a coastal small

town of Tunisia called Monastir. Shes a very proud

Tunisian young lady who has a very colorful vision

    of life.

In fact, she is always dressed up in Green while

    meeting her friends from the Nature Committee;

they are not only ecology defendants but also

botanic geeks. They are running a recycling projectfor the plastic materials used in our laboratories at

the faculty and they are taking good care of the

    faculty gardens.

    4

This was the first marathon organized by ATEP, and

we are planning to make a new edition for next year

and other pharmacy students organizations through

    the world may do so.

She is beautiful in her deep Bluejacket when she

plays Sports. She is good at basket, football,

volleyball, handball, swimming, tennis and even

    Paintball!

Last October, ATEP organized the biggest event in

    Monastir: The Pharmarathon: A Students

marathon for Multiple Sclerosis. She wanted to

raise awareness of this disease that affects more

than one thousand of Tunisians. There were nearly

400 participants and the winners were rewarded

with interesting gifts. The departure was from our

faculty and the finishing line wasin the stadium ofMonastir.

ATEP flies intoBlue skyhorizons when it comes to

    the Professional Development committee. She

attends LIT Workshops every week and she is

preparing the first Patient Counseling Event in

Tunisia, next March. The finals will take place at the

Tunisian Pharmacy students congress that will hold

a scientific symposium on Chiral drugs and itstherapeutic effects

She wears her Red skirt during Public Health

campaigns. This past year, we witnessed her leading

different campaigns and raising awareness among

    students, public, little children, health

    professionals

The campaign counted AIDS, Tobacco, Diabetes,

Breast Cancer, Obesity and Malnutrition for Children

awareness as well as conferences about: Organsdonations, AIDS, Diabetes

She looks really nice in her Orange shirtduring her

Voluntary work with her friends from the

Humanitarian committee. Let me tell you that this

past week, she had her first humanitarian

campaign. In fact, after our revolution, many

families had nothing left: no job, no food So we

decided to organize a campaign in order to collectclothes, foods and financial support for them. It

was a successful step and we will start distributing

the donations in the upcoming weeks.

ATEP shines like a star in a Yellow dresswhen she

hangs out with her artistic friends from the Culture

committee that involves theatre actors, Arab music

lovers, a Rock music band, Dancers, Cinema

    enthusiasts

She also meets her friends from the Editorial board

of our magazine: LAPOTHICAIRE once a week to

    work on a biannual edition.

Her Pink shirt always reminds me of the happy

times we had during parties, concerts and travels

organized by the Leisure Committee. Every year,

she does her best in organizing a prom ball that is a

beautiful closure to five years of hard work and

    studies in the faculty.

Hopefully, ATEP will get the chance to organize the

    3rd

    or the 4th

edition of EMPS, and all of you can get

to visit our beautiful country and learn more about

this interesting young lady and her many friends.

    EPSFEGYPTIAN PHARMACEUTICAL STUDENTS' FEDERATION

    On 25th

August, after the elections of 2010-11, EPSFers (as we affectionately call ourselves) came to the

admission to declare their start. All the Executive Board members had their souls fired to work and from here

their journey began and they all started planning, organizing and coordinating the events.

Reporter: What was the first step?

EPSFer: We started with the Leaders in Training (LIT) IPSF

Professional Development event, to unleash all our hidden

potentials and start a correct basis as we tacked all the basic skills

    we need to start work.

Reporter:Well done and great fresh start how about October

in Egypt and all fighting breast cancer we have been hearing, what

    was your role?

EPSFer: The Second Race for the Cure in the Pyramids, yes indeed

we participated and supported all the women suffering from the

    disease.

Reporter: Last year by the same timing we heard that EPSF

launched a conference? What was your contribution this year?

EPSFer: Indeed we followed our tradition as we launched the 15th

National Annual Conference that took place in El Mansoura. It was

a great opportunity for all of Egypt's pharmacy students to meet

and exchange their thoughts. The conference main theme was to

"Fight smoking and Physical dependence". Also there was the EPSF

    21st

General Assembly where the elections and reports.

Reporter: So the winter Season started, what were your activities

    during November and December?

EPSFer: Well yes the weather started to change but our souls

remained all on fire. We put all our energy in organizing the WorldPneumonia Day, 12

thNovember. For the first time in Egypt the

Pneumonia awareness campaign was organized by EPSF national

and local Public Health teams. Three weeks before the World

Pneumonia Day EPSF prepared the information, designed

publications, distributed it all around Egypt then the teams started

the awareness campaign in Malls, Universities, Clubs, Pharmacies,

Pediatric hospitals, primary schools and streets in more than 25

city in Egypt, our target was the children everywhere.

    7/17

Reporter:That was indeed an Enormous Event, how about the rest

    of the month?

EPSFer: The TPSS "Tanta Pharmaceutical Scientific Society" had the

honor to organize World Diabetes Day. It was held in the University

Medical Campus and in collaboration with IFMSA-Egypt

International Federation Medical Students' Association using the

EPSF Posters and Flyers were distributed everywhere raising theawareness. In addition, they measured blood glucose for the people

    who desired.

Reporter:Targeting two Disease in such short time, how awesome is

that! Did you target any other prevalent diseases?

    EPSFer: Certainly, 12th

December was the World AIDS Day. This year

EPSF in a collaboration with UNAIDS and many world and national

organizations provide health care organized a great celebration for

this event In El-Gezira Youth Club in Cairo, it was an open day whichhave several activities, awareness and games for youth.

Reporter:Thats Excellent to know, so what else have you worked

    on?

EPSFer: As Pharmacists we are the main source of information of

drugs and any related condition, and People will always refer to

pharmacists as health care providers, thus we must be prepared for

this, as the future favors the prepared mind. So by applying the

Clinical Skills Event (CSE), throughout all the local associations we

launched a fundamental key to prepare the future pharmacist the

    world expects.

Reporter: Yes! But exams are coming up! What are your future plans?

EPSFer:Planning is the main key to success so we shall follow our agenda for the second semester. We already

started hanging the Step On The Way Banners. Step On The Wayis a huge educational program that takes place

in the mid year vacation but due to the political circumstances it shall be postponed to the next semester. We

    will also put a clear plan to the Future Pharmacist Program, the huge course which offers two packages;

Marketing oriented pharmacist or a Clinical orientated pharmacist, which will be done in collaboration with

different hospitals and accredited universities and take a month.

Reporter: Good! I think the current political events had greatly

    affected your activities or plans!

EPSFer:Absolutely! I'd like to surprise you that we have two Turkish

students enjoying their time in Egypt. They came at 24 January and

will stay till the middle of February, they got a safe training in

Children's Cancer Hospital and visit a lot of places in Cairo, and they

go and empower awareness as much as they can.

EPSFer:Yeah sure but when you have the will you find the way, we will

also carry on the Patient Counseling Event ( PCE ) that always takes

place during the second semester. We shall all improve our skills

    IPHSAIranian Pharmaceutical STUDENTS' Association

    Iranian Pharmaceutical Students Association

(IPhSA) is a non political NGO representing Iranian

pharmaceutical students all over the country withmore than 400 full members and many more active

students helping us voluntary. The aim of the

organization is to establish a network of pharmacy

students in Iran in order to encourage them to

improve their profession as a major part in the

health system. We try to achieve our goals through

different activities, such as public health campaigns,

national and local symposiums, short-term courses,

local and national research projects, etc.

Being one of the 20 largest and most populated

countries in the world, Iran has long geographical

distances and vast cultural and social gaps between

students of 13 different pharmacy schools. Thus

there are plenty of remarkable potentials for a

national pharmacy students association like IPhSA.

In order to get the best results from all these

potential, the executives of IPhSA are mostly

    elected for two year terms.

    Activities

    1. Education and Practice ActivitiesDue to our short history in collaborations with IPSF,

not all of the projects of IPhSA are done exactly in

the same pattern of the federation. Thus we have

been trying to match the formats and also start the

    new activities.

Only in this IPhSA year (starting mid October) we

had 5 meetings and an LIT programme in Tehran

and we are planning on having more in the future.

    2. Public Health ActivitiesIPhSA has a lot of successful experiences

considering public health activities in Iran, held in

parks, shopping centers and public schools. Thisyear we are planning to do General Health

Information campaign in 4 schools in Tehran and

we believe that the first step to have a healthy

country is giving basic and minor health information

    to the children.

    3. Student Exchange ProgramAlthough we are young in SEP and have some

obstacles beyond our control, but the SEP team

believes with some more effort and newly updatedmaterials there can be hopes of better days for the

    Iranian student exchange programs.

    4. Other ActivitiesIPhSA tries to spread the spirit of IPSF, as an

international active federation, around the nation

and also is aiming to improve the personal and

professional skills of all the pharmaceutical

students in Iran. With these goals, IPhSAs

publication committee manages translation groupswhich are translating booklets from IPSF and also

non IPSF materials. Scientific texts are being

    translated as well.

    KPSSKuwait pharmacy student society

KPSS was founded in 1999 to be the official representative of all pharmacy students in Kuwait University as

There is only one school of pharmacy in Kuwait which provides bachelors degree in pharmacy after completion

of full time five years courses.

Annually in October, KPSS members are elected democratically to serve and help future pharmacists in

different aspects to become professional pharmacists in Kuwait.

KPSS accomplishments throughout the past years are enormous. And this

year KPSS has attempted to provide various activities for pharmacy

    students.

IPSF World Congress and EMPS 2010:

    We have participated in 1st

Eastern Mediterranean PharmaceuticalSymposium (EMPS 2010) which was hosted by Jordan Pharmaceutical

Student Association in Amman Jordan from 10th

    to 14th

    July 2010, which I

    personally attended.

Our Society also took part in the 56th

IPSF World Congress which was held

    in Slovenia from 2nd

    to 12th

    August 2010.

    Health Awareness Campaigns:

KPSS understands the importance of establishing health awarenesscampaigns and all the advantages it brings for the students and public. The

first health awareness campaign was "Cancer Day". A lecture was given

about cancer especially breast cancer and the importance of early screening

and it also encouraged pharmacy students to promote health issues to their

    families and friends.

The second health campaign was "Diabetes Day". Many educational

brochures regarding diabetes disease, treatment options and healthy

diabetic food recipes were distributed. KPSS also provided blood glucose

measuring booth which was equipped with the latest most specific andsensitive glucose measuring kit. In addition, Dina and Lina's Diet Center

which is considered one of the most famous diet centers in Kuwait,

participated and provided samples of appropriate diabetic food that can

help diabetic patients control their eating habits and they granted 10%

    discount vouchers for students.

    Educational Courses for Students:

KPSS organized chemistry and free Anatomy sessions in the morgue, as well

as essay correction sessions for English and Pharmacology courses. In

addition, KPSS provided video recording and editing sessions for patient

counseling role play which was part of Pharmacy Practice course.

    13

    14/17

The student society formulated and distributed review questions for most of

the courses for all pharmacy students.

    Social Activities:

KPSS organized the Annual Foot ball Tournament for pharmacy male

students, which was held in Mishref Field. The tournament was sponsored by

Wataniya Telecom Company and the winning team received 300KD. In

addition, a barbeque trip to Shuwaikh Beach was arranged.

    Spring Holiday Activities:

To show the students the great importance of voluntary work, KPSS invited

Mr.Abdulrahman Al-Fraih, member of Red Crescent Society in Kuwait, to give

orientation session about voluntary work and its impact on human level as

    well as on international level.

    Communication Programs:

"Your Opinion Matters" was the name of the campaign KPSS launched for pharmacy students. This campaign

aims to open a platform for students to send any suggestions through KPSS email or hot line.

KPSS is composed of six committees (freshman, student, social, cultural, media and international). KPSS opened

the door for any pharmacy student who is willing to register in any of its six committees in the campaign "Hand

by Hand" to serve the students more efficiently and effectively.

    Celebration Activities:

To celebrate the end of mid-term exams, a buffet that included delicious food was served for the students.

Additionally, KPSS posted congratulations posters for pharmacy students who made the pilgrimage.

    Student Activities:

"White Coat Ceremony" program, arranged for first year

students, includes students performing the Oath of

Pharmacy in presence of the Dean of the faculty and the

head of each department. KPSS provided each student with

Kuwait Drug Index Book (KDI), lab coat, name tag, note pads,

pens and mugs as a welcome gift.
