What causes Alzheimer's Disease? As we grow older, certain changes

in brain tissue occur in all of us. But in people with Alzheimer's disease, the change occurs in large numbers of cells and in specific areas of the brain. Alzheimer's patients develop what are called amyloid plaques (abnormal clumps of protein) and neurofibrillary tangles (nerve cells that become tangled and dysfunctional). Certain chemicals responsible for transmitting nerve impulses in the brain are reduced. No one knows exactly why this happens, and research efforts are still under-way to discover the cause or causes of Alzheimer's.

What are the symptoms of Alzheim-er's Disease?

Alzheimer's disease usually comes on slowly, with a gradual deterioration

of memory and difficulty learning new information. The patient develops prob-lems in carrying out familiar tasks, un-derstanding concepts and taking care of grooming and household chores... Stayed turned next time for more about the symptoms of Alzheimer's!

Activities for seniors that won’t break the bank

Growing older doesn’t mean your lifestyle and daily activities have to slow down. There are many ac-tivities for seniors that are easy and affordable. From bird watching to book club to creating a work of art there is an abundance of low-cost activities out there. Many art galler-ies and concert venues frequently offer free senior admission days, concerts or other cultural events throughout the year. Li-braries in the area sponsor book clubs as well as guest lecturers. Exercise classes are another great op-tion through the YMCA or local senior centers. Staying active and engaged is paramount to seniors leading a healthy life in their retirement years. Many seniors find low-cost entertainment and opportunities to socialize through their community centers and churches. For those who live in assisted living com-munities, residents are able to stay active with a smorgasbord of activities

as well as shopping and entertainment outings. At the Arbor Company, our Engagement Directors are specially trained to coordinate activities for all levels of physical and cognitive ability including performances, art classes, computer classes, woodworking classes and many other enriching events. For more information about the exciting events going on in our community, con-tact Arbor Terrace at Crabapple at (770) 649-1009.

When it’s time to not drive(NAPSI)—Staying on the road to safety may be harder for many elderly drivers than they realize.

The DangerAccording to the National Highway

Traffic Safety Administration, senior citizens account for only 9 percent of the population but almost 14 percent of fatal traffic accidents.

As people age, their driving patterns change. Retirement, different sched-ules and new activities affect when and where they drive. Although most older adults drive safely because they have a lot of experience behind the wheel, when they are involved in crashes, they may be hurt more seriously than younger drivers.

Many see driving as an important part of staying independent, and people 70 and older tend to keep their licenses longer and drive more miles than in the past.

What To DoElderly drivers and the people who

care for them should have a trusted doctor check their eyes and reflexes to determine whether they should be driv-ing anymore.

If it seems a driver you care about should be off the road, listen to his or her concerns and feelings on the sub-ject. Explore the possibilities. Are there solutions that could keep him or her driving safely longer, such as getting new glasses or only driving during the day?

Try to arrange for alternative trans-portation so he doesn’t feel trapped at home. If she sells her car, remind her of the money she’ll save on insurance and maintenance—which can be used for buses and taxis.

Having this talk may not be easy but you could save a life.

Retirement News for

Research suggests more planning needed(NAPSI)—About 10,000 baby boom-

ers retire every day across America but research from the Insured Retirement Institute (IRI) has found they are losing confidence in their ability to attain fi-nancial security during their retirement years. A 2015 study by the IRI found that only 27 percent of boomers are highly confident their savings will last throughout retirement. This is the low-est level since 2011, when this annual study began.

Retirement planning experts say the lack of confidence could be the result of a combination of factors that have made saving for a secure retirement more difficult. These factors include longer life spans and thus potentially longer retirements, uncertainty with retirement programs such as Social Security and Medicare, and the rising cost of health care.

The survey found that many boom-ers have not risen to the challenge and have inadequate savings for retirement. As a result, they may need to work longer than planned or face steep cut-backs to make ends meet in retirement.

“Unfortunately, many baby boomers are unprepared for retirement and few can be absolutely certain their sav-

ings will last 20 to 30 years after they have stopped working,” IRI President and CEO Cathy Weatherford said. “But there’s some good news in our research.

We have found—overwhelmingly—that those who have developed a holis-tic retirement plan are by far the most confident and best positioned to attain a financially secure retirement.”

National Retirement Planning Week® 2016 is April 11 to 15. Given the benefits of having a comprehensive retirement plan in place to guide you to a secure retirement, Americans are encouraged to use this time to develop their own plan. Those who have already done so are urged to review and update their plans.

To help with the process, the Na-tional Retirement Planning Coalition established the website www.RetireOn-YourTerms.org, offering Americans of all ages the latest retirement planning information, tools and resources. The site organizes these resources based on life stages, ranging from students all the way to those in their 70s and beyond.

Those who require additional assis-tance and individualized guidance are

encouraged to consult with a financial professional. Financial advisers can

help you explore your retirement needs and develop a savings plan to get there.
