Empson and Co has been a leading Italian wine exporter for almost fifty years. It was founded by Neil and Maria Empson whose main goal has always been to import the beauty and culture of Italy all over the world through its finest wines.

OUR STORY

Maria fell for Italy when she attended the Academy of Fine Arts in Florence, vowing to one day return. Years later, when exploring Europe with her husband Neil Empson, New Zealand born and bred, she fell in love all over again alongside Neil. The young, ambitious couple saw the potential in the many stunning regions of the country and in the quality wines produced using traditional Old World techniques combined with contemporary knowledge.

The enterprising pair quickly set up a wine export business in Milan and began scouring the Italian countryside for wineries to export, first to the USA. Neil and Maria knew there was a budding market for fine Italian wines overseas, they just needed to find the rights ones. Their goals were clear from the start: They wanted to bring consistent, quality, family-owned and boutique wineries that shared their passion to the world, essentially highlighting all Italy has to offer.

Having successfully represented some of the best Italian wineries overseas, the pioneering company continues to enjoy its position as a foremost exporter in an ever more dynamic and growing industry, with a portfolio of top wines from all over Italy, Chile and New Zealand.

Daughter and fellow tastemaker Tara Empson shares her parents’ drive and dedication and has recently taken over the reins, after managing client relations and the American and New Zealand markets for over thirteen years. Her main goal is to continue to promote and strengthen Empson and Co.’s portfolio, which is already available in twenty-eight countries.

Founded in 1980 by Romano Marengo, Ca’ Rome’ is located in Barbaresco in Piedmont. Ca’ Rome’ is home to classic red winemaking and quality wines. Today, the winery has 17 acres under vine, and Giuseppe Marengo acts as the winemaker.

Bongiovanni was founded in 1950 by Giovanni Bongiovanni, a grass-roots man with a profound instinct for soil potential. Today the estate is run by Davide Mozzone, who also acts as the winemaker. The winery has 17 acres under vine.

Marcarini was founded in the 1850s in the province of Cuneo. Today the winery is owned by Manuel Marchetti and his children with Armando Cordero acting as the winemaker. Marcarini currently has 42 acres under vine including several grand, historic crus.

Gaudio Bricco Mondalino was founded in 1973 in the province of Alessandria. The Gaudio family has been making wine for three centuries, and today the winery is owned by the Mauro Gaudio, Beatrice, and family. Gaudio Bricco Mondalino currently has 44.5 acres under vine.

Poderi Luigi Einaudi was founded in 1897 by Luigi Einaudi, who would later go on to be Italy’s first president. Today the estate is run by his great-grandson Matteo Sardagna, winemaker Giuseppe Caviola, and a team of young winemakers. Located in Dogliani, the winery has 111 acres under vine.

Founded in 1936, Costaripa is located in Moniga del Garda in Lombardy. The owner and winemaker, Mattia Vezzola, focuses on maximizing the potential of indigenous grapes like Groppello and Marzemino. Mattia with his children, Nicole and Gerardo, run the winery.

Reversanti was established in 2005. The vineyards are located in Castiglione Falletto, Barolo, La Morra, and the Barbaresco and Barbera communes. The winery focuses on showcasing each terroir to highlight the nuances of the crus of Piedmont.

Founded in 1982, Bortoluzzi Winery is located in Gradisca d’Isonzo in Friuli-Venezia Giulia. The owners include Alessio, sales manager, Alberto, vineyard manager, and Angela who deals with administration and accounting and their parents, Giovanni and Mireide Bortoluzzi.

The story of Molo 8 began in 1921 with Quitico Decordi Sr. who ran a small eatery and made wines to serve in his restaurant. The acclaim for the wines was so great that the family started focusing on winemaking, moving from simple house wine to crafting artisanal wines produced from local grapes.

Canella was founded in 1947 by Luciano Canella and was one of the first state-of-the-art winery specializing in Prosecco. Augusto Dal Cero founded Corte Giacobbe in 1934 after purchasing his first three hectares. Today the winery is run by Augusto’s grandchildren, Davide, Alberto, Francesca, and Nico. The winery has grown to encompass 99 acres and sits between two extinct volcanos.

Bottled by the Canella family, Canella Specialty Wine Cocktails focus on combining zesty bubbles with succulent fruit to make colorful cocktails. The wine cocktails are low in alcohol and have no artificial flavoring or chemical tampering.

Cignale was founded in 1981 by Neil and Maria Empson when they decided they wanted to craft their own Super Tuscan wine. They chose wine producer and friends, Alessandro “Sandro” François and his wife Antonietta, to partner with on this winery.

Carpineta Fontalpino was founded in 1967 by Italo Cresti. The estate sits just outside Siena in the area famed for an 800-year-old battle between Florence and Siena and has 27 acres under vine. Today the winery is run by Italo’s children Gioia and Filippo.

Founded in 1962, Boscarelli is located in Montepulciano in Tuscany. Paola De Ferrari Corradi owns the estate alongside her two sons, Luca and Nicolò. Together they have achieved an unbroken track record of vintage-to-vintage consistency and quality that has lasted over half a century.

Marchesi Pancrazi was founded in 1975 in the province of Florence. The winery is owned by Giuseppe Pancrazi. Marchesi Pancrazi currently has 51 acres under vine. The vineyards contain high concentrations of iron in the soil, essential to producing complex Pinot Noir.

Fuligni was founded in 1923 in the province of Siena. Today the winery is owned by Roberto Fuligni, and the winemaker is Paolo Vagaggini. Fuligni currently has 25 acres under vine. The Fuligni range is a complete cross-section of Montalcino offerings: Rosso, Brunello, and a Super Tuscan.

Conti Costanti was founded in 1555 in the province of Siena. Today, Andrea Costanti owns the winery, and Vittorio Fiore acts as the winemaker. Costanti currently has 25 acres under vine with an average yearly production of about 60,000 bottles.

Terrabianca was founded in 1988 by Roberto Guldener in the Chianti Classico and Maremma regions of Tuscany. Vittorio Fiore acts as the winemaker. The property covers 569 acres of vineyards, olive groves, and woodland.

Neil and Maria Empson have always favored Tuscany as a winemaking region. Pairing with friend and winemaker, Franco Bernabei, Supremus is crafted from some of the best vineyards sites in Maremma, Colline Pisance, Colli Fiorentini and Chianti Classico.

Monte Antico was founded in 1977 by Neil and Maria Empson as a dedication to their love of Tuscany. Franco Bernabei, a longtime friend of the Empsons, acts as the winemaker and works with the Empsons to style the wine which is a blend of Sangiovese, Cabernet Sauvignon, and Merlot.

Bucci winery was founded in the 1700s and is located in Ostra Vetere, Marche. The owner, Ampelio Bucci, is flanked by oenologist Giorgio Grai. Together, they have worked to maintain the best of Marche’s winemaking tradition while revolutionizing some of Italy’s old winemaking ideas.

Founded in 1988 by Neil and Maria Empson, Toscolo was a labor of love for the Empsons who wanted to express their longtime passion for the Chianti region. They called on friend and world-renowned winemaker, Franco Bernabei to help style the wines, combining fruit and finesse.

Il Feuduccio Winery was founded by Gaetano Lamaletto in 1995 in the province of Chieti in the region of Abruzzo. Today Il Feuduccio is proudly run by the founder’s son, Camillo Lamaletto, and the founder’s grandson, Gaetano. The total surface under vine is 133 acres.

The wines from Abruzzo became famous in the 16th century, thanks to Princess Margaret of Austria. Fantini, located in Ortona, tries to capture that history and bring it to consumers worldwide. The winery currently has 9,884 acres under vine.

Peter Heilbron founded Bellafonte in 2007 after falling in love with Umbria. Located in Bevagna, the winery focuses on local varieties while creating minimal impact on the environment. The total area under vine is 17 acres.

Matané was founded in 2008 as an exploration of Southern Italy’s winemaking potential. Before the winery was founded Neil, Maria, and Tara Empson looked for the right terroir in the area. They discovered some of the finest and oldest vineyards in Daunia region.

Carlo Hauner Sr. founded Hauner winery in 1968 on the Island of Salina in the Aeolian Islands and Vulcano. Today the winery is run by Carlo’s son, Carlo Hauner Jr. The winery currently has 49 acres of land under vine on mineral-rich volcanic soil and has also planted vineyards in Vulcano.

Le Casematte was founded in 2008 by Gianfranco Sabbatino in Faro Superiore. Gianfranco is a man that is passionate about wine and Sicily. He was able to combine both when he began producing Faro wine a 100% native appellation. Today the winery has 17 acres under vine.

Vigneti del Vulture was founded in 2009 on the slopes of Monte Vulture. The winery focuses on showcasing Basilicata’s native varietals, namely Aglianico, Greco, and Fiano, and bringing them to the international market. Owned by the Farnese Group with Dennis Verdecchia acting as the winemaker.

Vigneti Zabù sits on a hill, Sambuca di Sicilia, located in the Belice Valley. The location of Lake Arancio nearby tempers the hot Sicilian summers creating an ideal microclimate. Founded in 2007, the winery employs Giuseppe Alfano Burruano to act as the winemaker.

Pietradolce was established in 2005 on the Northern slopes of Etna. The vineyards are composed of stony, sandy loam, with abundant mineral elements. The soil is the result of the numerous eruptions by Mount Etna, which makes the wines unique.

Musìta was founded in the late 1800s by Don Ignazia in Salmei. The location’s hot, dry climate produces grapes with excellent aromatics. Today, the winery is now in its fifth-generation and is 100% family-run. There are 125 acres under vine.

Neil and Maria Empson founded Shardana with the help of Santadi’s winemaking team and world-renowned winemaker, the late Giacomo Tachis. Santadi’s location near the seafront provides outstanding terroir for the vineyards and produces grapes with bewitching complexity.

Founded in 1960, Cantina Santadi is located in the province of Cagliari in the small town of Santadi. The President Antonello Pilloni works alongside General Manager, Raffaele Cani to produce wines deeply rooted in Sulcis terroir.

Jankara Winery was founded by Renato and Angela Spanu in 2006 when they purchased 21 acres of virgin hillside soil in the prestigious sub-zone called Vena di San Leonardo. Today the winery has 11 acres under vine. The Spanus are now flanked by legendary winemaker Gianni Menotti.

Main Divide is the second winery of the Donaldson Family. The fruit comes from local growers who provide grapes that express unique regional and varietal characters. The Donaldson family works closely with these growers and has significant input into the vineyards’ management.

Escarpment was founded in 1998 in Martinborough. From the beginning, Larry McKenna has acted as the winemaker. Under Larry’s leadership, the team aims to reward wine lovers with progressive and suggestive wines that encourage them to venture to the edge of wine appreciation.

Corofin is an artisan family wine company in Marlborough, New Zealand launched in 2014 by Mike and Anna Paterson. Their sole ambition is to transmit the voice of the land and the season through crafting small single block wines from pinot noir and chardonnay grapes.

Pegasus Bay was founded in the mid-1980s by Ivan and Chris Donaldson and their four sons. The winemaker is the eldest son, Matt Donaldson. The Pegasus Bay Philosophy has always been to grow grapes of the highest quality that fully express the unique characters of their vineyard.

Aldo Olivier Gramola, who has been producing grapes and wine since 1975, founded Falernia in 1998. The Falernia project was born after he and his cousin Giorgio Flessati, famed Italian oenologist, joined forces. The winery is located in the Elqui Valley region of Chile.

Founded by Neil and Maria Empson, Seven Terraces is a tribute to the couple’s love for wine. A native Kiwi, Neil takes pride in his heritage and the evolution in the quality of Kiwi wines. The Empsons decided to bottle these approachable and fruit-forward wines as a dedication to the terroirs of New Zealand.

Wild Sardinia is located in the Province of Oristano in Sardinia. When the owner, Flavio Porcu, decided to start his project here, he knew what he wanted to create, a product that reflects its location and is made from high-quality ingredients with elegant packaging.

Founded in 1924 in Neive, Levi Distillery was run by Romano and Lidia Levi. The Grappas that are produced there are known for the freshness of the pomace and the Distillery’s use of direct-fire stills. Additionally, Romano was known for hand painting the label of every bottle of grappa produced.
