norm, replaced by contingent workers such as freelancers and part-time workers. The long-term trend of hiring contingent

workers will continue to accelerate with more than 90 percent of large corporations planning to substantially increase their use of a

flexible workforce.

arrangements – defined as temporary help agency workers, on-call workers, contract workers, and independent contractors or freelancers – rose from 10.1 percent in February 2005 to 15.8

percent in late 2015.

EMPLOYMENT TRENDS Current trends could lead to a net

employment impact of more than 5.1 million jobs lost to disruptive labour market

changes over the period 2015–2020, with a total loss of 7.1 million jobs—two thirds of which are concentrated in routine white collar office functions, such as Office and

Administrative roles—and a total gain of 2 million jobs…

Recent discussions about the employment impact of disruptive change have often been polarized

between those who foresee limitless opportunities in newly emerging job categories and prospects that

improve workers’ productivity and liberate them from routine work, and those that foresee massive

labour substitution and displacement of jobs.

Both are possible.
