World Facts:There are 2 Billion adherents to Christianity, and 30% of all Christians are Pentecostal or Charismatic.

In Brazil, Chile, China, Guatemala, Kenya, Philippines, Nigeria and many other nations, more than two-thirds of Protestants are Renewalists.

~ Tod Johnson, Pew Forum

The Renewal Movement grew 4x faster than global population last century. For the next 25 years, the rate should continue at 2x population growth.

~ Vinson Synan, Regent University

Pew Forum defines a “dedicated Christian” as one who attends Church, reads the Bible, and gives money regularly:

Christians... Spirit-empoweredThe Renewalist movement is growing without regard to denominational barriers. In some parts of the world, Empowered21 is witnessing renewal in traditional Christian populations. In other regions it is empowering fresh evangelism.

In Asia 47% of Christians are Spirit-empowered, but this only accounts for 3.2% of the total population. With 93% un-reached, Asia’s potential is in evangelism. In contrast, Europe claims to be 76% Christian but only 4% are Spirit-empowered.

Page 6: Empowered21 Executive Summary Booklet

Some religions have much younger populations, on average, than others. In part, the age differences reflect the geographic distribution of religious groups.

Those with a large share of adherents in fast-growing, developing countries tend to have younger populations. Those concentrated in China and in advanced industrial countries, where population growth is slower, tend to be older.

The median age of two major groups – Muslims (23 years) and Hindus (26) – is younger than the median age of the world’s overall population (28).

All the other groups are older than the global median.

Christians have a median age of 30, followed by members of other religions (32), adherents of folk or traditional religions (33), the religiously unaffiliated (34) and Buddhists (34).

Jews have the highest median age (36), more than a dozen years older than the youngest group, Muslims.

April 25-29, 2006 the International Center for Spiritual Renewal facilitated and hosted the Azusa Street Centennial. This one hundred year anniversary

celebration of the Azusa Street revival was attended by over 50,000 people from 106 different nations. The streams of Spirit-filled Christianity converged in Los Angeles to rejoice in a century of blessing on this movement that now numbers over 600 million people around the world.

In 2008, the new Oral Roberts University Board of Trustees began work on clarifying the mission of the university for 21st century ministry. An initiative was launched by

the Board of Trustees called Empowered21 and the International Center for Spiritual Renewal was asked to facilitate this process to focus on new generations and the power of the Holy Spirit. Immediately, it was discerned that the convergence of these dynamics was leading toward questions and answers that would serve the entire Spirit-filled movement. Empowered21 began to be understood as a natural kingdom-wide follow-up to the Azusa Street Centennial. The Azusa Centennial reflected on what God had done for the last 100 years and Empowered21 would focus on the future of the movement.

Page 8: Empowered21 Executive Summary Booklet

During 2009 and early 2010, Empowered21 held 17 unique conversation events around the world with leaders, scholars and new generation voices to

ascertain their insights into the issues facing the movement in the 21st Century. Over 500 people from 54 nations and over 15 different universities were involved in the conversations. Questions like: “What does it mean to be Spirit-empowered in the 21st century?” and “What steps can be taken to engage new generations in the Spirit-filled experience?” were asked.

This process revealed eight themes common to the conversation events as the top needs in the movement - in order of most commonly mentioned:

1 Need for Leadership Character – leaders who are transparent, filled with integrity, authentic, real, pure, and cleansed

2 Greater Biblical Literacy – knowledge of the Bible and an understanding of the purpose of the Holy Spirit, gifts of the Spirit, Spirit Baptism, etc.

3 Need for Spiritual Fathers and Mothers – role models and intergenerational unity to be called for globally

4 Resources – those harvest fields that seem to be ripest in the 21st Century are the most in need and should be resourced accordingly

5 Education – ministerial training and higher education

6 Contextualization – leadership native to the region being served

7 Transition of Leadership – new leadership of the movement which goes beyond the influence of the USA - moving East and South

8 Rise of Islam – intense pressure is being experienced by Spirit-empowered believers who are aggressive in evangelism on this frontier

To Empowered21

Conversation input and discoveries were used to inform the program of the first Empowered21: Global Congress on Holy Spirit Empowerment which was held in

Tulsa, OK, April 8- 11, 2010. The Congress focused on shaping the future of the Global Spirit-empowered movement by focusing on crucial issues facing the movement and connecting generations for intergenerational blessing and impartation. Over 10,000 people from 95 nations attended the April Congress where over 210 learning conversations and numerous general session events informed and connected them. It became obvious that the Congress was forming a launch base for further exploration.

The International Center for Spiritual Renewal was asked to solidify and expand Empowered21 following the Global Congress, and Empowered21 was transferred

to the Center in the summer of 2010. As the governing and fiduciary entity, the ICFSR assigned inspirational oversight of Empowered21 to the E21 Global Council. This relationship allows the Empowered21 movement to move quickly toward its goals while retaining accountability for its vision and transparency in its finance.

Three years later, at the request of the ICFSR board, stewardship of Empowered21 is returning to Oral Roberts University. The Empowered21 network now spans

the entire globe and its vision includes reaching every person on Earth. Reuniting Empowered21 with ORU brings this global network alongside the scholarship and next-generation vibrancy of a premier Spirit-empowered Christian university.

Empowered21 is now witnessing a convergence and collaboration of Spirit-empowered ministries around the world. A series of regional Empowered21

leadership teams have formed to focus on unique issues faced by Spirit-empowered churches operating within disparate socioeconomic climates. The entire network is able to benefit from best practices and growth in individual regions.

Further research within the Empowered21 network has identified five highly important trends where the Spirit-empowered Church is most likely

to grow and positively influence the world. They are:

1) experience a fresh, historic outpouring of the Holy Spirit

2) increase in leadership development within Spirit-empowered churches

3) be increasingly known for meeting human needs in the community

4) see an increase in the practice of divine healing

5) be more open for newer expressions of Spirit-empowered ministry

j A Local Church Experience to Connect the Generations i

GENERATIONSE X P E R I E N C E

The Generations Weekend Experience is designed to provide a replicable model for local churches to answer the new generation cry for spiritual fathers and mothers. The goal is ultimately for mentoring and spiritual parenting to take place within the church.

The weekend contains a variety of presentation styles including small group discussion, teaching, music, fellowship, expert panels, individual interaction and and impartation moments. The weekend is intentional in connecting the generations.

Three areas show strong growth upon completion of the Weekend:

(1) Understanding of the Biblical Terminology and Process for Inter-generational Mentoring

(2) Sense of Personal Well-Being and Enrichment Through Increased Inter-generational Connections

(3 Desire and Intentionality for Intergenerational Relationship.

Grace North Foursquare Church in Anthem, Arizona helped conduct the first Generations Weekend. Three generations were engaged; the youngest participant being 15 years old and the oldest 78.

North Cleveland Church of God in Tennessee made the Experience their own. People from 12 to 82 years old exchanged stories, studied the Bible, and laughed together. A precious time of impartation came at the conclusion of the weekend as old and young washed each other’s hands and prayed for one another.

scholars, building a foundation on the word of godTASK: To reflect on the theological challenges Spirit-empowered Christianity faces in the 21st Century.

In July 2013, a group of select international scholars came together at Alpha-Crucis College in downtown Parramatta, a large suburb of Sydney, Australia, to inform, deepen, and make more efficacious the goals and purposes of all E21 initiatives. Scholars are being added to the Consultation every year. Their work will culminate with a presentation of a four-volume publication on Pentecostalism and a theological track at Jerusalem 2015.

Page 30: Empowered21 Executive Summary Booklet

Set forth by the Global Council to assist in forming an outcome based model for Spirit-empowered discipleship and address issues such as...

• What should a Spirit-empowered disciple look like in the 21st century?

• What are the appropriate stages of spiritual development for children, youth and new believers?

• What steps can churches take to enhance their development of disciples?

This requires the Holy Spirit leading us into...fresh, frequent Encounters with Jesus, intentional times of Experiencing Scripture, andpurposeful Engagement in Fellowship.

Numerous reports indicate a “break down”between stages 2 and 3 where what was Explored and Embraced has not become part of every day life and thus not part of a believer’s identity.
