CULTURE16
Emporia is the Official Founding City of Veteran’s Day! Emporia celebrated the first Veterans Day in 1953, just before congress made it a National Holiday in 1954. The idea came from Emporian Alvin J. King, who suggested the renaming of Armistice Day. Emporia Congressman Ed Rees and president Dwight D. Eisenhower, also of Kansas, took the final steps to create this reverent holiday.
For over 65 years, Emporia has paid special homage to all Veterans. Our Veterans Tribute Celebration in November culminates with a parade and memorial service. In 2011, Emporia was honored to be a top 6 finalist in Rand McNally’s “Most Patriotic City” contest.

HISTORY18
Our StoryDescribed as “the loveliest site in the world for a town,” Emporia was founded by five men from Lawrence in 1857, when Kansas was still a territory battling over slavery.
The town charter prohibited gambling and the sale of liquor, making Emporia the first prohibition town in the world, 61 years before National Prohibition. Touting a squeaky clean image and free-state values, Emporia sprang up quickly. By the 1880s, Emporia had established a teacher’s college and was a thriving railroad and ranching hub. Several of our intact downtown buildings date to this time period.
Historic Downtown Emporia300-1200 block of Commercial StRecently designated as a Historic District, downtown Emporia is the place to go for local nightlife, cuisine, coffee, antiques and boutiques. Many architectural features of our historic buildings have been retained or are in the process of restoration.

A Kansas WonderVoted one of the Eight Wonders of Kansas, the Flint Hills are a special, magical place. Located west of Emporia, and extending north and south for several hundred miles, the Flint Hills are one of the last remaining tallgrass prairie eco-systems in the world. They are especially beautiful in spring after the annual burns, when lush green grass and wildflowers begin to bloom. (8wonders.org)
