Bob Tramburg, chief executive

officer at Vita Plus, said he has fol-

lowed a simple premise while man-

aging a successful livestock-nutri-

tion company for more than 25

years.

“Serve customers, make money,

and have fun,” Tramburg said.

“There are too many businesses that

try to make it way too complicated.

We just try to bring something that

is different and unique to our cus-

tomers and have fun doing it.”

Vita Plus is an employee-owned

livestock-nutrition company based

in Madison, with facilities in five

states and 45 dealers across the Midwest.

The company was founded by UW-Madi-

son colleagues Lyle Hill (Iota brother, #255)

and Wally Henderson in 1948 in a barn in

Fitchburg. Their idea was to take the latest

nutritional research out of the laboratory

and onto the farm.

Sixty-two years later, the company has

355 employees and manufactures and dis-

tributes about 375,000 tons of feed per year.

The company sells feed for dairy animals,

swine, and beef cattle through its owned

facilities and dealerships.

Vita Plus is one of Wisconsin’s largest

livestock-nutrition companies. Allan

Schultz, vice- president of technical ser-

vices, (Iota brother, #799) said the compa-

ny feeds about 300,000 dairy animals and

has a major presence in the swine industry

in neighboring states.

Tramburg, the stepson of co-founder Hill,

said Vita Plus doesn’t look anything like it

did when he joined the company in the late

1960s.

“The whole concept of farm-specific feed

and how we serve our customers has been

the big change,” Tramburg said.

“We help our customers with

problems they know they have

and problems they don’t even

know they have. That’s our job

when we get to the farm.”

Alan Gunderson, vice-president

of sales and marketing, (Iota

brother, #902) said the livestock-

feed industry has changed dra-

matically since he joined the com-

pany in 1979. He said some peo-

ple might remember when Vita

Plus sponsored the popular TV

dance show “Dairyland Jubilee”

in the 1960s and 1970s and tout-

ed its traditional Grist-N-Rich product.

Today, the company has about 350 standard

products.

“We used to sell Grist-N-Rich to everybody

because that was the basis they used for all their

herds,” Schultz said. “The standard off-the-rack

product would work for everybody. Today, with

the size of the herds and the amount of prod-

uct they buy, there is much more custom for-

mulation. Our nutritional consultants in the field

Justin Banach # 1470 graduated this past fall

semester with a degree in Biological Systems

Engineering specializing in Food Engineering.

He is currently attending graduate school at

Iowa State University studying Food Science

and Technology. He is working on a project to

modify milk protein concentrate to be used as

a functional ingredient. Brother Banach great-

ly enjoyed his undergraduate years with the Iota chapter. His favorite

memories include taking a John Deere 5425 for a trek up Bascom

Hill and breakfast with our cook, Earl, on Friday mornings. We wish

him success in his studies and look forward to his future endeavors.

Brent Clements, #1264, “It was difficult to see our family sell

our herd of Guernseys in 1994. Shortly thereafter, I invested in a

really great brood cow named Glen Brook Smokey Vivian with

Jon Lantz and Jason Danhof. She scored EX-93, made over 30,000

M, and became the dam of Lantz Farm Visa and Vilter thanks to the

great care of Jon Lantz and his family.

“In 1996, I graduated from the University of Wisconsin-Madison

followed by working at Bader-Rutter & Associates, then the largest

agricultural advertising and marketing agency in the U.S. From

there, I began working at an investment bank on Wall Street, and

then I decided to go back to graduate school at NYU. Within a

year, the bank transferred me to Chicago where I earned an MBA

from Northwestern University, Kellogg School of Management.

As a part of a contract with the firm, I agreed to complete the com-

pany’s executive rotational training program and relocate to Miami,

Fla., in 2001 to oversee the firm’s national small business lending

division. It was a great opportunity to provide loans to small busi-

nesses, including dairy farms seeking to expand or improve their

operations while maximizing the entrepreneurial spirit. We grew

the staff from over 200 to 3,000 and opened offices in Denver,

Boston, and Nevada.

“After more than 10 years, I recently became a partner in a pri-

vate equity firm rescuing small businesses and real estate projects

on the East Coast affected by the recession in Fort Lauderdale,

where I reside today. I enjoy following the latest Guernsey news

on the AGA website and have even watched the Guernsey show

at World Dairy Expo online. It was great to watch this year as one

of my former 4-H judging teammates and childhood neighbor, Lynn

Harbaugh, judged the show.”

The ingredients in the company’s products come from all over the

world, Gunderson said. Trace minerals often come from Asia and

Africa, and vitamins generally come from western Europe, China

and Asia.

Those global purchases require Vita Plus and other livestock-

feed companies to research the companies they buy from and their

products.

“We spend a lot of time and money checking those kinds of

things out so we can assure our customers that what they’re getting

is of the highest quality standards,” Gunderson said. “We partici-

pate in a third-party audit program called Safe Feed/Safe Food that

puts an emphasis on traceability. Vita Plus certainly recognizes

that the feed industry is part of the food industry. A lot of efforts

are made to make sure that the food we produce is safe, whole-

some, and dependable.

“We know where every pound of feed came from back to the

manufacturer. If there was a problem, we could quickly isolate it.

Traceability is a key word in our business at the present time.”

Tramburg said that in a competitive industry, Vita Plus has tried

to stay in front of potential customers and bring them something

that is “different, better and has value.”

“Farmers have to know that we’re not adding stuff to their rations

just to sell more product,” Tramburg said. “Our goal is not just to

maximize milk production but to maximize profitability at the farm

level.

Ken Von Rueden, manager of the Vita Plus facility in Dodgeville,

said Tramburg has allowed him to do his own thing at the

Dodgeville plant.

“We’ve been owned by Vita Plus for 20 years, and I have yet to

propose a project that didn’t get done,” Von Rueden said. “It’s a

great deal to have the Madison office for a resource but to also

have the independence to run the operation the way we think it

should be run at the local level. You know that when you make

decisions and in the work you do, you’re part owner.

“We don’t have all the resources of the ADMs and Cargills of

the world, but we have enough to provide a good product at a com-

petitive price. And it works.”

Vita Plus’s other Wisconsin facilities are in Columbus, Fall River,

Lake Mills, Loyal, and Madison.

Vita Plus advocated for agriculture in the fall of 2009 when jour-

nalist Michael Pollan was invited to UW-Madison as part of the

university’s “Big Read” program. In Pollan’s 2008 book, “In

Defense of Food: an Eater’s Manifesto,” he reviewed the effects of

large industrial agriculture on our eating habits .

Vita Plus organized a group of farmers and agribusiness repre-

sentatives to attend Pollan’s presentation and provided them with

green T-shirts with a slogan that said: “Eat food, be healthy, and

thank farmers.”

The company has since taken that effort farther with its “Thank

a Farmer” campaign on the side of its semitrailers. The first trail-

er, unveiled during this year’s World Dairy Expo, features the

images of six farm families, and a second trailer will hit the road

soon.

“For us, we were looking at what one or two things can we do

to make a difference,” said Marjorie Stieve, Vita Plus marketing ser-

vices manager. “It’s a positive thing that consumers are getting

more and more engaged in the discussion of food. We need to take

that as an opportunity and do what we can.”

In Memory of our Iota Brothers

Harris F. Babler, Iota # 296, died on January 15, 2011, in

Marshfield, Wis., at 94 years of age. He was born in Monticel-

lo, Wis., and studied at the University of Wisconsin where he

graduated with a bachelor of science degree in dairy science

and economics. He became a member of the Alpha Gamma Rho

Iota Chapter in 1937 where he served as noble ruler. Harris was

our oldest living Iota Chapter alumni member.

Harris started his career with the U.S.D.A. Commodity Cred-

it Cheese in Chicago. He traveled through the Midwest grad-

ing and inspecting cheese and then worked with the Borden

Company in Marshfield as procurement manager and retired in

1980.

Duane A. Miller, Iota #516, died on January 13, 2011, in

Madison. He entered the UW-Madison College of Agriculture

and graduated with a degree in animal husbandry. While at the

UW, he won the International Livestock Meat Judging Contest

and served as chairman of the Little International in 1954. He

was a member of the Iota Chapter of the AGR fraternity.

After military service, Duane was a cattle buyer for Rath Pack-

ing and then American Beef Packers, both located in Iowa.

Duane and his family moved back to his hometown of Oregon,

Wis., where he farmed and later developed housing subdivi-

sions. In 1991, Duane retired from farming and started full time

in real estate at which he was still actively working at this death.

Duane was very involved in farming and the Holstein cattle

community. He had served on the World Dairy Expo Board, the

Dane County Fair Board, the Dane County Holstein Breeders

Board, and was an active 4-H leader for many years

Dairy Expo – WINNER

During the 2010 Dairy Expo show,

AGR had a booth for all AGR broth-

ers and friends from across the

nation to stop by and say hello.

They were requested to sign up for

Facilities and Finance Committee Reports on Progress

In March 2010 the Madison Fire Department increased our occu-

pancy level from 49 to 85 people to cover some of our larger gath-

erings.

The chapter rent of the 2011-2012 year was adjusted to $92,500.

This small increase over last year will help pay for future mainte-

nance updates such as new carpeting for the Chapter Room, bath-

room improvements, and possibly a new pier. The cost to live in the

AGR house is about $7,065, in the dorms about $7,217 and in the

apartments about $6,445 which includes out-of-house dues of $480.

Perhaps those out-of-house dues are too low as it lowers the incen-

tive to stay in the house.

AGR Chapter House summer rental was more successful than

previous years; however, the Alumni Corporation still sustained a

loss of $ 3,684 which is shared 50 percent by the Chapter. This

loss includes three months of property insurance, bank loans, and

property taxes which is very hard to overcome when the house is

not fully occupied.

This fall a laptop computer owned by one of our freshman broth-

ers was stolen from the house. This loss was not covered by any

insurance policy. After much discussion, the Foundation and the

Corporation Board paid for a portion of this one-time loss. From

now on, all brothers living in the house must maintain a renter’s

insurance policy.

The best news of the day is that our cook, Earl Krueger, wants to

stay for another four years before retiring.

Alan Koepke, Facilities & Financial Committee Chair

Chapter Development Making headway

Exciting times are always occurring at the chapter house and with

the chapter development committee. We have just completed the

new officer transition meeting with a little twist compared to pre-

vious transition meetings. Past goal setting sessions had just the

incoming officers gather with some alumni advisors. This year,

we asked some of the outgoing officers to join also at Bill and

Leslie Hantke’s house for a day of fun activities and planning dis-

cussions. Having the outgoing officers involved brought some

great insight for the new officers and alumni about the past year

and thoughts on how to approach the future. I am excited with all

the enthusiasm and great ideas that were shared and would like to

encourage everyone who has the opportunity to visit to inquire on

what is occurring.

Along with this insight, the Insight’s program has also been intro-

duced. Insight’s is an educational tool that teaches us about our

personalities and how we think as well as interact with different

personalities. You may have heard of similar programs such as

Myers-Brigs and Keirsey Temperament. We are fortunate to have

Brother Bob Hagenow being well versed in training about Insight’s

and willing to spend some time helping us identify some opportu-

nities to build brotherhood. To help describe the program it is help-

ful to think of the colors of fiery red (driven), cool blue (analytical),

earthy green (compassionate), and sunshine yellow (sociable).

These colors signify different traits that describe our natural and

adaptive personalities. Something to note is that we are all differ-

ent combinations of each of these colors. Many businesses utilize

this knowledge when building teams and in gaining this knowl-

edge earlier, we are hoping to strengthen the Iota team.

These items have been part of our more recent activities. In the

past year we have also had some great discussion on scholarships,

building on the Big Brother program, recruitment efforts, and con-

tinuing to build on our overall brotherhood. We welcome all that

want to join in on these efforts to contribute their thoughts to con-

tact us. If anyone is interested in being involved or has questions

feel free to contact me by email at [email protected] or

phone 920-960-7083.

Jon Rasmussen, Chapter Development Committee Chair

Communications CommitteeRevamps Website

This past year, the AGR communications committee began process

of revamping the website this past April. As we moved through

the process, we began moving the content throughout the summer

and finished moving material in October. College brothers did

almost all the work. However, Brother Anson Goldade, #1245,

provided oversight and assistance. The new site went live in Novem-

ber. Here are some of the new capabilities:

• Able to organize committees and boards on the website, includ-

ing minutes, agendas, discussions, and broadcast emails.

• Event calendars — Ability to publish upcoming events to the

website, including committee and board meetings.

• Will be able to publish Crescent online and provide archives of

previous Crescents.

• Better content editing capabilities. No longer have to engage

vendor for most changes we want to do to the site.

• Ability to customize forms. Example would be forms for per-

spective members requesting more information. Many more

applications over time.

• Centralized directory of all alumni and actives. Each person

can customize their profile with the most current information.

• Ability to submit news articles online.

Moving forward, we plan to have current standing committees,

boards, and actives begin using and understanding tools on site.

Likewise, we plan to engage other alumni to begin updating their

profiles. Also, we would like to use the website to manage com-

mittee, board, and college activities. Posting of information online

for all users to see. However, the public wouldn't have access, only

registered Iota users (alumni and actives). Long-term, we would

like to build communities of interest using the alumni directory.

For example, a community of alumni focused on a specific indus-

try. Provides ability to leverage the power of the alumni network.

During the recent 10-hour-long officer transition meeting, the

previous and new officers reviewed their successes and challenges

during the 2010 year. They discussed and established new goals

for the chapter and each officer positions and what they can do to

Build a Better Iota Chapter in the coming year. The officers are to

be congratulated for their professionalism and maturity shown dur-

ing this meeting, and we wish them another successful year of

leadership for the Iota Chapter.

In addition the officers discussed the results of a Personality Pro-

file Assessment which was sponsored by our Educational Foun-

dation and Bill and Leslie Hantke. Each officer had previously

completed the profile evaluation as part of a leadership training

presentation given by Bob Hagenow. The results are helping each

officer identify his own unique leadership and communication style

and will serve as a valuable tool for the new officer team and their

future careers.

Another important result of this session was the creation of the

new “We CARE” Iota Chapter Vision. Each letter in We CARE

stands for an important AGR value.

●CommuNICATE the goals, values and responsibilities of

being an AGR member

●ACCouNTAblE for your actions and words that will affect

and Bill Hantke for their assistance. Also a special thank you to

Leslie Hantke and Ruth Drye for the great lunch and dinner prepa-

The Iota Chapter Founders Day event will be held on Saturday,

March 26, 2011. We will be inviting all our 50-40-30-20-10-year

alumni members to attend and be honored at our awards banquet.

We will again be joined by the AWA alumni women during the

evening’s social time and awards banquet. It should be fun to talk

with many of your brothers and AWA friends.

Mark your calendar, and plan to attend our 2011 Founders Day

event.

Several Iota brothers and alumni made the long trip to Califor-

nia to cheer for their UW - Badgers football team. Everyone had

a great time in spite of the cold California weather and the out-

come of the game.

This January, Iota Broth-

er Jacob Brey of Door Coun-

ty was chosen as Wiscon-

sin’s Outstanding Holstein

Boy and Danae Bauer of

Waupaca County was named

Outstanding Holstein Girl

which is the most prestigious

honor given by the Wiscon-

sin Holstein Association to

a junior member. Brey is the

son of Bill and Clarice Brey

of Sturgeon Bay. Brother

Brey attributes his success

to his family and working on

his family’s farm. “I think

growing up on a dairy farm

builds a work ethic into you.

It builds your character. It

gave me responsibilities, and I grew into those responsibilities.”

Brother Brey received a full education in dairy from participating

in Junior Holsteins, FFA, 4-H, and Badger Dairy Club, and was

involved in dairybowl and dairy judging. He is majoring in dairy

science with a business emphasis. In his other accomplishments,

he was selected as a National Distinguished Junior member final-

ist this past summer at the National Holstein Convention and serves

on the WHA Junior Activities Committee.
