SEPTEMBER 2018 Dear Residents, Family and Friends of Glenbrooke Fall is upon us! I hope you have enjoyed the summer and have taken the opportunity to take a dip in our pool. If not, it’s never too late to relax and lounge around while enjoying the Florida sunshine. We will be celebrating Labor Day with a barbeque. Come join us as we close out the summer and look forward to some cooler weather in the next few months. Bring a friend or your family! It’s a pleasure to serve you! Gina Bell Executive Director If My Body Were A Car If my body were a car, this is the time I would be thinking about trading it in for a newer model. I’ve got bumps and dents and scratches in my finish, and my paint job is getting a little dull. But that’s not the worst of it. My headlights are out of focus, and it’s especially hard to see things up close. My traction is not as graceful as it once was. I slip and slide and skid and bump into things even in the best of weather. My whitewalls are stained with varicose veins. It takes me hours to reach my maximum speed. My fuel burns inefficiently. But here’s the worst of it.... Almost every time I sneeze, cough or laugh, either my radiator leaks or my exhaust backfires. Resident Spotlight Our Resident Spotlight goes to two very special people, Jim and Betty Gaidry. They have been volunteers with the Red Cross for more than 20 years as phone consultants. The saddest part of their job is the post evacuations, knowing the hardships these people are going through. Jim and Betty just celebrated their 50 Wedding Anniversary; Congratulations! They sing at their church, volunteer at the community center, pick up garbage around campus and clean the pool in their down time. Jim also performs with “The Downstagers.” We were able to see them perform in June; what a wonderful group. We are so lucky to have these two at Glenbrooke! When you see Betty and Jim, please congratulate them. Employee of the Month Kudos to Plarita (Rita) Lewit who has been selected as Glenbrooke’s September Team Member of the Month. Rita can be seen serving and assisting residents in the dining room. Her supervisor and co- workers describe her as super sweet, funny and having a wonderful personality. She is organized and quickly learned her job. Rita has a seven year old still at home to take care of, and her husband is now retired. She is glad to settle down a little after years of traveling. Next time you’re in the Dining Room, congratulate Rita for this worthy recognition. Rita, your kindness to the residents has not gone unnoticed. Happy 74th Birthday, Smokey Bear Smokey Bear is one of the most recognizable figures in America, ranking right beside Mickey Mouse and Santa Claus. In 1947, the iconic motto now associated with Smokey Bear was coined: “Remember, only you can prevent forest fires.” Smokey is one of two people in the entire country who has his own zip code. The zip code 20252 belongs to Smokey the Bear and no other resident. The only other person who can claim a zip code for themselves is the President of the United States. 20252 is in New Hampshire. Happy Birthday, Smokey! Submitted by Eleanor
