• Founded in 1979 by the President’s Council on Sports and Fitness, a non-profit organization

• NAHF mission is to improve the quality of life for individuals in the United States through the promotion of physical fitness, sports and healthy lifestyles.

What is Employee Health & Fitness Month?

• Created by the National Association for Health & Fitness (NAHF) and ACTIVE Life

• Employee Health & Fitness Month (EHFM) is both a national and international invitation to encourage workplaces to engage in wellness activities.

• The goal of EHFM is to promote the benefits of a healthy lifestyle to employers and their employees through worksite health promotion activities and environments.

What is Employee Health & Fitness Month?

• EHMF is held during the month of May each year.

• EHFM employers will challenge their employees to create Healthy Moments, form Healthy Groups, and/or develop a Culminating Project.

• Participants will be able to log these activities on the EHFM website throughout the month, allowing employers and employees to track, share, and promote their individual and group activities.

Why change Employee Health & Fitness to a Month?

• From 1989-2010, tens of thousands of employees engaged in National Employee Health & Fitness Day.

• Healthy behavior change takes time to develop into lifestyle habits.

• In 2011, NAHF and ACTIVE Life, re-designed for a full month – and added an international focus – would lead to healthier lifestyles and sustainable behavior change worldwide.

What is Demand Healthy Week (DHW)?

• Demand Healthy Week, presented by ACTIVE Life, (May 2-8, 2011) is EHFM’s kick-off event!

• This week will challenge everyone, not just employers and employees, to create and share moments of health, consume healthy products, and call for healthy change in their communities.

How To Participate

• Visit www.healthandfitnessmonth.org to register. Find information/ideas for Moments, Groups and Projects and to sign up/participate for FREE!

• Employers should register their worksite and then invite employees to register as individual members of their worksite.

• Healthy Moments, Groups, and Projects will be logged on the EHFM website throughout the month, allowing employers and employees to track, share, and promote their individual and group activities.

Healthy Moments

• Focused on the individual, Healthy Moments are occasions of healthy eating, physical activity, or personal/environmental health.

• Examples of Healthy Moments include:– Walking to work

– Trying a new healthy recipe

– Cooking dinner at home instead of eating out

– Learning healthy baking substitutions for common ingredients

– Planting an extra row in a backyard garden to harvest and share with a local food pantry

– Signing up for an exercise class

Healthy Groups

• Healthy Groups are small groups of employees who gather to participate in an activity intended to last beyond EHFM.

• Examples of Healthy Groups include:– Creating lunchtime exercise groups who meet during mealtimes to

walk, run, or bike.– Forming commuter groups who bike or walk to and from work

together.– Establishing healthy meal clubs that share lunch recipes, cook for one

another once a week, and distribute healthy snacks to each other throughout the day.

– Starting intramural athletic teams or joining community athletic leagues including soccer, softball, or kickball.

A Culminating Project

• The Culminating Project is an event or series of events that promote health through the whole company or community.

• Examples include:– Planning a company 3K or 5K race

– Planting a community garden

– Adopting a company-wide physical activity or tobacco cessation policy

– Facilitating “brown bag lunches” open to the community during which a program emphasizing health and fitness is presented

National Physical Activity Plan (NPAP)

• Employee Health and Fitness Month would be a perfect fit into the foundation of Business and Industry Societal Sector of the National Physical Activity Plan www.nationalphysicalactivityplan.org

• 8 sectors were developed for NPAP containing 44 strategies.

• 8 high-level, common strategies among all sectors is present in the EHFM initiative.1. Educate people, organizations and society on how to become more

physically active.

2. Develop partnerships that create synergies in implementing initiatives and in reinforcing the importance and methodologies associated with physical activity.

3. Communicate, promote and advocate the importance and methodologies associated with physical activity. Make a compelling and urgent case for increasing physical activity.

4. Develop and acquire resources needed to support initiates, activities and project tasks.

National Physical Activity Plan (NPAP)

5. Establish standards, monitor progress and measure performance including in terms of the “how to” approaches to influence people to become physically active.

6. Develop programs disseminate implement and maintain physical activity programs.

7. Create legislation at all levels through advocacy.

8. Integrate all NPAP programs within each sector; integrate strategies and initiatives with other organizations, eg. Health care providers, colleges, etc.

Conclusion

• The National Physical Activity Plan is a living, evolving document and Employee Health and Fitness Month is a powerful, thoughtful initiative. Together our success can be defined as doing the right things and doing things right!
