Mini-grant leads Alexander to establish a Chandler youth reading club Last summer the City of Chandler awarded Erica Alexander with a $955 Human Relations Commission Diversity Education Mini-Grant. WIth it, she founded Club READ (Reading Experiences Appreci-ating Diversity) for students in grades 2-12 who attend school and/or reside in Chandler. The purpose of the summer reading club is to facilitate opportunities for youth to identify, read and describe mul-ticultural literature that increases cultural awareness and sensitivity through various activities. Exposing them to literature that they would not necessarily be introduced to in the school setting is crucial. Last summer, 21 students read Scottsdale author Jewell Parker Rhodes’ most recent book Sugar and either Fast Sam Cool Clyde and Stuff or Monster. This summer, students will focus on the Civil Rights Move-ment and will be reading The Watsons Go to Birmingham or Eyes on the Prize: America’s Civil Rights Years, 1954-1965.
