EMP Protection An EMP (Electro Magnetic Pulse) is an instantaneous, high-intensity burst of electromagnetic energy caused by the rapid acceleration of charged particles. A burst of electromagnetic radiation that is usually caused by either a very high yield explosion - such as a nuclear detonation – or by a natural solar eruption that periodically emanates from our sun. The resulting high energy electromagnetic fields can produce electrical voltages so intense they have the potential to overload or decimate an entire electrical and technological infrastructure. DigiPlex EMP protected modules are compliant with the high international standards demanded for the protection of key infrastruture installations.

As society grows more reliant on electronic devices, so its vulnerability to an EMP occurrence. An EMP strike on a data centre need not be a malicious threat; it can be a normal phenomenon like a solar storm or a lightning strike. The consequences of an EMP strike destroying our electrical and/or ICT grid are far-reaching, with long lasting, crippling effects to our electronic dependent infrastructures. An EMP could destroy our way of life by taking out large portions of our infrastructure and no industry would be immune should such an event occur. So how should we protect your IT equipment?

Hardware and IT equipment are frequently exposed to actual damage, but have you considered whether it has any form of EMP protection, both of which can result in the loss of information data, should an incident occur. Understanding the potential and severe damage of an EMP attack is of paramount importance. Protection is essential.

DigiPlex offers this protection at ALL its data centres. Our standard solution for EMP protection, offered at all our DigiPlex data centres, is a six sided solid steel plated room built around the standard IT module giving a protection in compliance with the highest standards

Solar Flare

A solar flare is a sudden eruption of intense high energy radiation from the sun’s surface caused by a huge explosion on the surface of the sun. A solar flare could hit the earth like a lightning bolt and knock out all electrical and navigational equipment in key parts of the world or even a complete shutdown across the globe.

Technical

At all our Nordic data centres we have already built in several bespoke solutions for EMP protection in accordance with the IEC/IEEE recommended standards. These installations provide protection of up to 80dB in the frequency range 100 KHz to 18 GHz. An EMP protection room is built as a standard module and contains the standard IT housing functions for power and cooling. There are no space limitations for an EMP protected module and the sizes we offer are the same as for any other installation. However, as the cooling infrastructure is placed outside the EMP zone, careful planning is necessary before implementation, to ensure the best possible PUE utilization. Capacities for cooling larger installations requires larger outside space for the cooling infrastructure. The required space for an IT installation with EMP is about 10 to 15% more for the same number of racks.

All customer requirements are expertly managed by the professional DigiPlex team to ensure complete customer satisfaction and assurance.

Our installations are tested and certified and comply with std. IEEE 299-2006.
