STATE OF THE HEART 4

What is EQ? A robust science has developed defining the concept of emotional intelligence; in 1990, professors Peter Salovey (Yale) and Jack Mayer (University of New Hampshire) published a paper explaining how emotions can assist thinking. Just as mathematical intelligence is the capability to accurately observe and use numerical data to solve challenges… emotional intelligence is the same with emotional data.

In simple terms:

Emotional intelligence is being smarter with feelings.

Instead of “heart over head” or “head over heart,” it’s about using our full capacity – integrating thinking and feeling so we can get great results.

In this report, data is based on the Six Seconds Model of Emotional Intelligence. This model includes eight specific competencies, divided into 3 major “Pursuits”:

Pursuit Competency Definition

Enhance Emotional Literacy Accurately identifying and interpreting both simple and compound feelings.

Know Yourself Self Awareness

Recognize Patterns Acknowledging frequently recurring reactions and behaviors.

Apply Consequential Thinking

Evaluating the costs and benefits of your choices.

Navigate Emotions Assessing, harnessing, and transforming emotions as a strategic resource.

Engage Intrinsic Motivation Gaining energy from personal values & commitments vs. being driven by external forces.

Choose Yourself Self Management

Exercise Optimism Taking a proactive perspective of hope and possibility.

Increase Empathy Recognizing and appropriately responding to others’ emotions. Give Yourself Self Direction

Pursue Noble Goals Connecting your daily choices with your overarching sense of purpose.

2011-2013

Data

Scores on “Total EQ” are declining globally:

In the specific EQ competencies, biggest drops 2011-2013:

Increase Empathy -2.1%

Navigate Emotions -1.4%

Exercise Optimism -1.4%

Implication

Google Trends show an approximate 25% increase in searches on “mindfulness” in this 3-year period. Yet EQ is going down. Could this be tied to dramatic increases in stress?1

Declines in Empathy mean people are less able to connect and collaborate. Declines in Navigate Emotions mean people are more volatile. Declines in Optimism mean people are less able to innovate. This is a dangerous combination in an era where change is needed.

Data

The 2011-2013 data show the Americas slightly ahead on overall EQ.2

Biggest gaps:

RP = Recognize Patterns noticing systems & behaviors

EIM = Engage Intrinsic Motivation lighting the fire inside

EO = Exercise Optimism seeing the possibilities, even in adversity

Implication

APAC: Lower scores on RP, EIM, and EO could combine; lack of awareness coupled with lack of risk taking and inner drive creates a jeopardy for getting stuck.

MEA: This profile matches Europe’s current economy; it suggests a drive to move forward, without a clear understanding of what creates the current reality (lower RP) and without confidence in success (EO).

Gender Gap

Previous research found women held the EQ advantage. No longer true in all areas of emotional intelligence.3

Implication

For some, it will be no surprise to see the graph to the right with nearly a mirror image. Yet these opposites are striking: Where women are strongest, men are weakest and visa versa.4

Greatest EQ strengths for “Ms. Average” are in making careful decisions and including others. “Chose Yourself” is the lowest macro area.

For “Mr. Average” it’s maintaining emotional balance and creating inner drive – and overall “Choose Yourself” is the highest area.

Older And… ? The biggest gaps between those over and under 40 years old: 5

EEL = Enhance Emotional Literacy naming and understanding feelings

PNG = Pursue Noble Goal putting your long-term purpose into action

Implication

Perhaps as we age, life experience teaches us about more emotions, and we have an expanded “sphere of concern” that requires us to consider those Noble Goals more deeply.

As in previous studies, we found little correlation between EQ and age in the “Choose Yourself” area. This suggests that if you want to become more intentional, to learn to respond instead of reacting, you can’t just wait to get older!

This graph shows the “Outcomes” – surprisingly, health is the biggest gap… but this includes mental health and the ability to cope with stress.

Influence is next. It’s easy to imagine that the younger crowd is typically less able to enroll others in their ideas, perhaps because of social bias, position and role – and perhaps because of experience.

EQ & Performance

A very strong correlation between emotional intelligence and key performance outcomes is evident. The outcome factors to the right are combined into a “Performance Outcome Score” shown on the vertical axis above. Emotional intelligence scores predict 50-60% of the variation in this performance score.6

As shown to the right, variation in the individual outcomes are also predicted by EQ scores.

Spotlight: Effectiveness

Effectiveness refers to the individual’s ability to produce important results efficiently. Globally, 46.5% of the variation in Effectiveness scores are predicted by EQ scores. In each region, EQ predicts:

AMER 41.7%

EMEA 44.6%

APAC 49.5%

EQ is most powerfully predictive of performance in APAC – the region that also

has the lowest EQ scores overall.

STATE OF THE HEART 13

Brain Styles 101 We know that emotional intelligence requires the rational and emotions networks of your brain to work together – to think about feelings and feel about thoughts. People learn how to do this, and due to the principle of neuroplasticity, the brain changes itself over time. We developed the term “Brain Style” to consider a person’s current pattern for processing and using both emotional and rational data.

Brain Style is based on three elements:

Focus: Does this brain prefer data that is analytical or emotional?

Decisions: Does this brain tend towards protection or innovation?

Drive: Is this brain more motivated by the practical or the idealistic?

Using opposite extremes of these three scales yields eight styles:

Scientist: Accurate, Careful, Precise Visionary: Passionate, Transformative, Long-term Inventor: Analytical, Creative, Open Guardian: Caring, Careful, Pragmatic Strategist: Precise, Careful, Future-oriented Superhero: Committed, Creative, Real-world Deliverer: Task-oriented, Generative, Practical Sage: Caring, Protective, Future-oriented

“Brain Style”: a picture of how the emotional and rational parts of your brain are working together.

Most frequent Brain Styles:

AMER: Deliverer - Task-oriented, Generative, Practical

EMEA: Sage - Caring, Protective, Future-oriented

APAC: Sage - Caring, Protective, Future-oriented

Implication

All the Brain Styles offer pros and cons; what styles are key for a region to reach the next stage of development?

World wide, the least frequent Brain Style is Visionary. In a world with significant chaos and challenge, it’s important to have people who can see a better future. Perhaps we need people with this Brain Style?

Least frequent Brain Styles:

AMER: Scientist – Accurate, Careful, Precise

EMEA: Inventor - Analytical, Creative, Open

APAC: Visionary – Passionate, Transformative, Long-term

Brain Talents

The Competencies for the Future

Page 18: Emotional Intelligence Insights 2011-2014 - Six …...Emotional intelligence means “smarter with feelings.” Details on page 4 It matters. See page 9 Globally, emotional intelligence

STATE OF THE HEART 18

Based on analysis of the Six Seconds Emotional Intelligence Assessment and over 2000 open-text comments about leadership performance, the “Brain Apps” are:

The 18 key competencies to create the future.

“Brain Apps” describe unique, powerful capabilities to create positive change. Grounded in research, these capabilities are essential for us to flourish in complex times – at work, in school, in life. The competencies of emotional intelligence are woven into these “Apps” as key factors to drive each talent.

Brain Apps

“App” is a metaphor to describe capability. What does your brain like to do?

What functions are easy and smooth for your brain?

Page 19: Emotional Intelligence Insights 2011-2014 - Six …...Emotional intelligence means “smarter with feelings.” Details on page 4 It matters. See page 9 Globally, emotional intelligence

STATE OF THE HEART 19

There are no overlaps between the top talents of each region, generating nine unique strengths. These icons are color-coded to match the “Pursuits” of emotional intelligence that are most closely linked to the talents. Thus in AMER and EMEA, 2/3 talents are linked to the area of AWARENESS. In APAC 2/3 are linked to the area of INTENTION.

Implication

As stress increases, there is often increased pressure to conform. Yet, in an increasingly globalizing and complex world, to create innovation we need multiple views.

If handled poorly, divergence leads to judgment: “They are different, so they are wrong.”

If handled well, divergence leads to breakthrough: “They are different, so let’s learn.”

To capitalize on the plurality shown by the nine different “Apps” across the world, we need to become better at using one another’s strengths.

About Six Seconds

Six Seconds is a global organization supporting people to create positive change – everywhere - all the time.

What if a billion people were practicing emotional intelligence?

We would connect with ourselves and each other. We would have the skills to make more careful choices by learning to respond, instead of react. We would thrive.

Would you like to be part of making that world?

Through 15 years of global experience and extensive research, we’ve found that the scientifically-based skills of emotional intelligence (EQ) are essential for change.

These skills are learnable, and predict stronger effectiveness, influence, decision making, health, relationships, and quality of life (data). Therefore, our vision is that by 2039:

one billion people will be practicing the skills of emotional

intelligence.

To support positive change, we’ve developed transformational, globally relevant, and scientific tools and methods. These solutions are used by large entities such as HSBC, FedEx, the US Navy, Emaar, Lenovo… by schools and community organizations… and by individuals around the globe. Our work has been featured in O Magazine, The Today Show, Discovery Channel, Chief Learning Officer, and many other publications in 10 languages. Six Seconds is the first and largest organization 100% dedicated to the development of emotional intelligence, a powerful toolset to support people to create positive change — everywhere, all the time.

The network includes over 50,000 members, and we have offices and representatives in over 25 countries. We run a “lab school” to develop transformational education, and we share the key learnings with the world. From our start in 1997 through 2012, our network has supported over half a million people to practice EQ — and made many more aware of EQ. Success! And: To reach one billion, we need to go further.

Would you be part of it?

STATE OF THE HEART 25

The State of the Heart report is created from the Six Seconds Emotional Intelligence Assessment, or SEI, database.

About the SEI8

The SEI (Six Seconds Emotional Intelligence assessment – Adult Version) was developed to assess the emotional intelligence based on an action model that distinguishes three pursuits and eight EQ components:

The SEI is published by Six Seconds, an Emotional Intelligence Network that offers training, assessments and products suitable to business and educational needs. The tool authors are Joshua Freedman, Massimiliano Ghini, Lorenzo Fariselli, and Anabel Jensen. SEI was originally published May 1, 2005.

Validity

Survey statements are randomly ordered so as not to be leading in responses to a five-point, interval (Likert) scale, which enhances accuracy in assessment. The SEI reports on three built-in validity indicators associated with survey completion, namely Positive Impression indicators, Answer Style correction and a test of answer Coherence.

Descriptive statistics based on the norm group of the SEI-AV, EQ components and Outcomes of Performance comply well with validation guidelines. The SEI is validated through Factorial Analysis; the eight EQ components render fair construct validity. Good concurrent validity is demonstrated by the EQ components that explain 68.97% of the Life Outcomes in a regression model. Cronbach’s coefficient alpha ranges from 0.64-0.82 based on a small number of items per EQ component, indicating satisfactory reliability. 9

Languages

Statistical analysis of ongoing data collection over time will ensure that the SEI remains actual, fair and unbiased towards diverse populations. Responding to large project demand, the SEI has been translated to other languages, e.g., Arabic, Australian, Chinese, English (US and UK), French, German, Indonesian, Italian, Japanese, Lithuanian, Portuguese, Spanish (CO and SP).

STATE OF THE HEART 26

About the Sample Population

The SEI database includes over 75,000 people from over 50 countries. The State of the Heart Report considers a sample population of assessment data from 2011-2013, adjusted and scored using a single international norm to provide a basis for global comparisons.

State of the Heart Sample

To develop a meaningful global sample, we analyzed the SEI norm base of 75,000+ assessments to identify the demographic profiles of the three global regions and other comparisons identified in this report. Using a random sampling protocol, the State of the Heart sample was developed to mirror the demographics of each world region.

The random sampling from our very large data set creates a even sample that provides an effective basis for comparisons. The resulting sample is 12,804 individual balanced by region, gender, age -- and year from 2011, 2012, and 2013.

The SOH sample group was scored using Six Seconds' international norm, a robust algorithm that includes 15 different normative scales.

Notes

1 Stress increasing; see Stress, Health & Emotional Intelligence: www.6seconds.org/2013/04/12/stress-health-emotional-intelligence/ 2 The EIM gap between AMER & EMEA is not statistically significant. The other gaps are statistically significant. All figures are statistically significant unless indicated otherwise. 3 The gender gaps above between AMER and APAC are not statistically significant. 4 Other than on EEL & RP, these gaps are statistically significant. 5 These gaps are statistically significant except on “Quality of Life” and “Relationships” which are not. 6 The predictive relationship is modeled through a “forward stepwise regression” yielding an combined R2 score; individual competencies and “Apps” are modeled through an individual regression. 7 There is a statistically consistent distribution of Brain Styles between those under 40 and over 40 years of age. 8 For information about SEI, or Sixseconds Emotional Intelligence, assessment, see www.6seconds.org/tools/sei 9 See the SEI Technical Manual, available online at www.6seconds.org/tools/sei/research
