GATHERING: The Spirit Calls Us Together Prelude

Welcome and Announcements Call to Worship

Though our questions may overwhelm us, and our doubts stridently speak, We praise you, O God, for the gift of faith.

Though we may miss the signs of your life, and ignore the little resurrections all around us, We praise you, Divine Spirit, for the gift of faith.

Though we may constantly seek after proof, and refuse to believe without seeing, We praise you, O Christ, for the gift of faith.

Thank you, Great Mystery, for your life that transcends our understanding,

for your presence from which we can never flee,

for your resurrection which is never defeated,

and for the gift of faith that enables us to trust even in the midst of our doubts and fears. Amen.

Opening Hymn “That Easter Day with Joy Was Bright” ELW 384

That Easter day with joy was bright; the sun shone out with fairer light when, to their longing eyes restored, the apostles saw their risen Lord!

O Jesus, king of gentleness, with constant love our hearts possess; to you our lips will ever raise the tribute of our grateful praise.

O Christ, you are the Lord of all in this our Easter festival, for you will be our strength and shield from ev’ry weapon death can wield.

All praise, O risen Lord, we give to you, once dead but now alive! To God the Father equal praise, and God the Spirit, now we raise!

Greeting

Alleluia! Christ is risen. Christ is risen indeed! Alleluia!

The grace of our Lord Jesus Christ, the Love of God, and the fellowship of the Holy Spirit, be with you all. And also with you.

Hymn of Praise “Open Our Eyes, Lord”

Open our eyes, Lord; we want to see Jesus, to reach out and touch him, and say that we love him.

Open our ears, Lord, and help us to listen,

Open our eyes Lord, we want to see Jesus. (Repeat)

Prayer of the Day Mysterious and Divine Presence, too often our hearts burn within us because our bodies know before our minds that you are here working in us and through us in this world. Open our eyes, and help us recognize you in all places and in all people, for the sake of the one whose presence is never far, Jesus Christ. Amen.

WORD: We Hear God in Scripture & Preaching

Luke 24:13-35...Now on that same day two of Jesus’ disciples were going to a village called Emmaus, about seven miles from Jerusalem, 14and talking with each other about all these things that had happened. 15While they were talking and discussing, Jesus himself came near and went with them, 16but their eyes were kept from recognizing him. 17And he said to them, "What are you discussing with each other while you walk along?" They stood still, looking sad. 18Then one of them, whose name was Cleopas, answered him, "Are you the only stranger in Jerusalem who does not know the things that have taken place there in these days?" 19He asked them, "What things?" They replied, "The things about Jesus of Nazareth, who was a prophet mighty in deed and word before God and all the people, 20and how our chief priests and leaders handed him over to be condemned to death and crucified him. 21But we had hoped that he was the one to redeem Israel. Yes, and besides all this, it is now the third day since these things took place. 22Moreover, some women of our group astounded us. They were at the tomb early this morning, 23and when they did not find his body there, they came back and told us that they had indeed seen a vision of angels who said that he was alive. 24Some of those who were with us went to the tomb and found it just as the women had said; but they did not see him." 25Then he said to them, "Oh, how foolish you are, and how slow of heart to believe all that the prophets have declared! 26Was it not necessary that the Messiah should suffer these things and then enter into his glory?" 27Then beginning with Moses and all the prophets, he interpreted to them the things about himself in all the scriptures. 28As they came near the village to which they were going, he walked ahead as if he were going on. 29But they urged him strongly, saying, "Stay with us, because it is almost evening and the day is now nearly over." So he went in to stay with them. 30When he was at the table with them, he took bread, blessed and broke it, and gave it to them. 31Then their eyes were opened, and they recognized him; and he vanished from their sight. 32They said to each other, "Were not our hearts burning within us while he was talking to us on the road, while he was opening the scriptures to us?" 33That same hour they got up and returned to Jerusalem; and they found the eleven and their companions gathered together. 34They were saying, "The Lord has risen indeed, and he has appeared to Simon!" 35Then they told what had happened on the road, and how he had been made known to them in the breaking of the bread.

The Gospel of the Lord. Thanks be to God.

Hymn of the Day “O Master, Let Me Walk With You” ELW 818

O Master, let me walk with you in lowly paths of service true; tell me your secret; help me bear the strain of toil, the fret of care.

Help me the slow of heart to move by some clear winning word of love; teach me the wayward feet to stay, and guide them in the homeward way.

Teach me your patience; share with me a closer, dearer company, in work that keeps faith sweet and strong, in trust that triumphs over wrong.

In hope that sends a shining ray far down the future’s broad’ning way, in peace that only you can give; with you, O Master, let me live.

Prayers

As each petition concludes: “Hear us, O God.” please respond: “Your mercy is great.”

Lord’s Prayer Gathered into one by the Holy Spirit, let us pray as Jesus taught us. Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name, thy kingdom come, thy will be done, on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread; and forgive us our trespasses, as we forgive those who trespass against us; and lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. For thine is the kingdom, and the power, and the glory, forever and ever. Amen

Sharing God’s Peace The Peace of Christ be with you always.

And also with you.

MEAL: God Feeds us with the Presence of Jesus

“Remember Me”

On the night he was betrayed, he took the bread. After giving thanks, he broke it and said,

‘This is my body, broken for you, and as you eat it, remember Me. This is my body, broken for you, And as you eat it, remember Me.’

On the night he was betrayed, he took the cup. After giving thanks, he lifted it up.

‘This is my blood, poured out for you, and as you drink it, remember Me. This is my blood, poured out for you, And as you drink it, remember Me.’

So, we thank you for the wine and for the bread, For we see the life you gave and the blood you shed.

And we remember, your wondrous love. you gave your body, you shed your blood. And we remember, your wondrous love, you gave your body, you shed your blood.

Communion The body of Christ given for you. The blood of Christ shed for you.

SENDING: Being Loved, God Sends Us to Love

Blessing

Sending Hymn “Glorious Day (Living He Loved Me)”

One day when heaven was filled with His praises, one day when sin was as black as could be,

Jesus came forth to be born of a virgin, dealt among men my example is He. The Word became flesh and the light shined among us. His glory revealed.

(Chorus) Living He loved me, dying He saved me. Buried, He carried my sins far away.

Rising, He justified freely forever. One day He’s coming, O glorious day, O glorious day.

One day they led Him up Calv’ry’s mountain. One day they nailed Him to die on a tree.

Suffering anguish, despised and rejected, bearing our sins my Redeemer is He. The hand that healed nations stretched out on a tree and took the nails from me. (Chorus)

One day the grave could conceal Him no longer, one day the stone rolled away from the door.

Then he arose over death He had conquered. Now is ascended my Lord evermore. Death could not hold Him, the grave could not keep Him from rising again.

Living He loved me, dying He saved me. Buried, He carried my sins far away. Rising, He justified freely forever. One day He’s coming,

O glorious day, glorious day. O glorious day.

Dismissal

Be safe….Embrace grace. Christ is risen! Go in peace. Share the good news. Alleluia! Thanks be to God. Alleluia!
