A Quick Guide to the GAme of RuGby SevenS

Rugby is a sport that has millions of fans across the world.

The basic idea of rugby is that each team moves the ball to the opposing team’s end of the pitch. When they reach the line they must put the ball down for a ‘try’, or they can kick the ball through the goal posts for a goal.

The players can pick up, carry, kick and pass the ball (although they can only throw it backwards to a player behind them). When a player is carrying the ball forwards the opposing players are allowed to stop them by tackling them to the ground.

A team in Rugby Union has 15 players. Sevens is a shortened version of Rugby Union. There are less players and shorter games but the matches are still played on a full-size pitch.

There are 7 players to a team, instead of 15.A team consists of 3 forwards and 4 backs.

Each match is 7 minutes per half, with 1 minute for half time in between.

Finals are 10 minutes each half, with 2 minutes for half time.

If knockout matches are still undecided, 5 minute halves of extra time are played.

There are 4 different ways to score points in rugby.

1. A TRY is scored when a player touches the ball down onto the pitch behind the goal line. A try is worth 5 points.

2. A CONVERSION is taken after a try is scored, when a player attempts to kick the ball between the posts. You have 1 attempt at a conversion following a try being scored. Kicking the ball between the posts for a conversion is worth 2 points.

3. A PENALTY is awarded by the referee as a sanction against a team that has broken the rules. A penalty kick is an opportunity to kick the ball between the posts for a penalty goal. A successful kick is worth 3 points.

4. A DROP-GOAL is when a player drop-kicks the ball between the posts from running play. This is also worth 3 points.
