Stan by Eminem is a good example of illustration in a music video, as the video clearly portrays the lyrics. The song is about a Stan, a fan of Slim Shady, who is devoted to him and keeps writing letters to talk to him. However, Slim doesn’t write back and Stan ends up killing himself over it.

MISE-EN-SCENE• The clothing that Stan wears is scruffy, which justifies

that he is poor and lives a rough life.• The props consists of pictures of Slim and letters to

him, which illustrates that he is obsessed with Eminem and he looks up to him.

• The lighting is dark which adheres to the style of the song being quite dark.

CAMERAWORK• The close-ups in the video highlights Stan’s emotions

when he is writing the song and how it angers him.• The long shots denote Stan’s room where he has a

wall dedicated to Slim, this is also described in the song but the visual of it makes it more concerning.

EDITING• The video uses cutting to the beat, which is where

the shot changes in time with the beat.
