Packaging In The Nutshell

Traditional

“Packaging is the technology of enclosing or protecting products

for distribution, storage, sale, and use. Packaging also refers to theprocess of design, evaluation, and production of packages.

Packaging can be described as a coordinated system of preparing

goods for transport, warehousing, logistics, sale, and end use.source from Wipedia : http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Packaging_and_labeling

New Generation

“Packaging in the real world require information to be c o n t a i n e d

and data communicable when needed. It efficient the h a n d l i n g

processes for logistics and transportation by providing the rightgoods, right condition, right time, right place, right quantity, right

cost to the right customer” – Thomas Yeo, LHT Holdings Ltd

Types & Materials Of Packaging LHT Sustainable PackagingA. NEA license waste wood collection centre

B. Recycled waste wood into wood chips

C. Sales of wood chips to renewable energy plant

D. At LHT, wood chips were undergone a high-pressure and high-temperature steaming process before becoming into an engineer compressed wood known as “Technical Wood”, a substitute wood.

E. TW shares similar characteristics of natural solid wood but has the added advantage of being pest and fungus-resistant, in accordance to the international standard.

F. A Life Cycle Assessment (LCA) conducted by SIMTech to assess, quantify and compare the environmental impacts of recycled technical wood

G. TW used as components for making pallets, crates & boxes. End of life it can be recycled and biodegradable.

Innovative PackagingLHT categorize it as “ Innovative Process Products Conversion” series, it fast gaining a strong foothold in the arena of green products that are designed and produced to reduce carbon footprints. The pallets provide innovative packing solutions that helps customers reduce waste, thereby contributing to the reduction of carbon emissions.

Environmental Consideration

“Deforestation is a major cause of climate change because it releases huge amounts

of carbon into the atmosphere contributing to the greenhouse effect.”

– Greenpeace International. March 13, 2006

Corporate Social Responsibility - LHT

“We are always conscious of our role in the conservation of natural resources. Recycling is one

of many efforts that reflect our commitment towards mitigating climate change and deforestation”

Established in 1977, started manufacturing quality natural wood pallets, boxes & crates. Today,

LHT manufactures 30 per cent natural wood pallets and 70 per cent of “Innovative Process

Product Conversion (IPPC) pallets which are partial or wholly make from waste wood materials.

New Generation – Transport-Packaging

TraditionalISPM 15 “Regulation of wood packaging material in international trade” affects all

wood packaging materials (pallets, crates, dunnages, etc) requiring that they be

debarked and then heat treated or fumigated.

New GenerationLHT “innovative process product conversion” pallets are made of combination of

laminated veneer lumber (LVL) and technical wood. These engineered wood products

undergone stringent process, high steam and high press which technically justified of

eliminating the wood pests during the process.

“some days all pallets may make this way using process wood ”

A Global Approach For I.O.T – EPCglobal

Global Standard One, or GS1 is a joint venture between formerly EAN

International and formerly the Uniform Code Council (UCC) is the corporation

where all UPC and EAN with the goal of developing global standards for the use of

RFID, as well as other visibility-enhancing standards, in the open supply chain.

GS1 an international organization, not-for-profit, neutral, works with communities of

trading partners, industry organizations, governments and technology providers

and responds to their business needs through the adoption and implementation of

global standards.

EPCglobal, a subsidiary of GS1, with its primary research partner Auto ID Labs to

design and develop of industry-driven standards for the Electronic Product Code™

(EPC) to support the use of Radio Frequency Identification (RFID) in today's fast-

moving, information rich, trading networks known as the EPCglobal Networks.

The EPCglobal Network uses RFID tags and readers to pass unique identifiers

affixed to individual items in the supply chain, whether the item be a pallet, crate,

box or individual unit.

EPC(Electronic Product Code)

A unique number that identifies a specific item in the supply chain

EPC Tag RFID tag that encoded with EPC number for the purposes of automatically identifying and tracking tags attached to objects

EPC Reader Software that sorts and manages data coming in from the EPC readers.

EPC Middleware Software that sorts and manages data coming in from the EPC readers

ONS(Object Naming Service)

Similar to Domain Name Service, that direct EPC queries to the location where informationassociated with that EPC-related can be accessed by authorized users.

EPCIS(EPC Information Service)

Defines standard interfaces to enable EPC-related data to be captured and subsequently to be queried which leverages security technology including authentication and access control.

Electronic Product Code is the unique object identifier (license plate) on the tag

A pointer to information about the item contains:

i. Header - which identifies the length, type, structure, version and generation of EPC

ii. EPC Manager Number - which identifies the company or company entity

iii. Object Class - similar to a stock keeping unit or SKU

iv. Serial Number - which is the specific instance of the Object Class being tagged

v. GTIN and other EAN.UCC keys can be used to construct unique EPC numbers

What is Electronic Product Code™ (EPC) ?

The Electronic Product Code™ (EPC) is the next generation of product identification. The EPC is a simple, compact “license plate” that uniquely identifies objects (items, cases, pallets, locations, etc.) in the supply chain – Source from FAQ EPCglobal network

New Generation – EPC / RFID Labeling

How EPC / RFID Standard – source from : http://www.gs1.org/how-epcrfid-works

The Electronic Product Code is a unique serial number tagged to a product in the form of a memory chip. Attached to the chip is a radio antenna which transmits the EPC as a radio wave to a Radio Frequency Identification (RFID) reader when prompted. The reader can be handheld and needs to be within range of the EPC tag. Objects in a shop or warehouse can obstruct the radio wave, but – unlike barcode technology – there doesn’t need to be a direct line of sight between the tag and the reader.

The EPC contains a wealth of product information, such as manufacturer, country of origin, use-by date, shipment and retail destination. Once the EPC has been captured by the RFID reader, it can be sent to a database and shared with trading partners.

“The Pioneer RFID Pallet Based On EPCIS

Summary

Environmental impacts from consuming raw materials havebeen the concern of many manufacturers. As a major woodenpallet manufacturer in Singapore, LHT Holdings, addressesthis issue by utilizing waste-wood over natural wood as theirprimary production material and converted it into substitutewood patent as “technical wood” as its final product.

LHT Gpac™ pallets are LHT’s latest product. Similar to thetechnical wood, GPac™ pallets are made of woodchips, driedand pressed into various shapes and sizes and biodegradable.

Under the regulation ISPM 15 require all wood packagingmaterials (WPM) to be heat-treated / fumigated forinternational trade. LHT had come up an ingenious way, underit flagship “innovative process products conversion” seriesusing it “technical wood” and other process wood for its pallets, boxes & crates making that do not away the heat-treated /fumigated process.

Development of EPCIS is the core element that based on GS1EPC/RFID standard for supporting the tracking and tracingprocess to enabled EPC-related data sharing within andacross enterprises, EPCIS provides important new capabilitiesto improve efficiency, security, as well to improve global supplychain visibility.
