WHAT ARE EMERGING TECHNOLOGIES?
• For many of our students, social media has emerged
http://www.scribendi.com/advice/understanding_social_networking_websites.en.html
• What about emerging hardware?
A VISION IN TWO PARTS:
• Becoming part of the existing Digital Landscape
• Identifying themes in anticipation of future trends
• Keys:
• Access and Outreach• Aesthetics• Aggregation and Convergence

HOW DO WE CONVINCE RESEARCHERS TO USE THE LIBRARY’S RESOURCES?
• Outreach Reference?
• Information Commons?
• Digital Outreach!

DIGITAL OUTREACH:MEETING RESEARCHERS WHERE THEY ARE
• Librarians need not be in competition with free online resources
• Libraries must become part of the Digital Landscape
• Emerging technologies offer us tremendous opportunities to support meaningful research
• Like outreach reference, we need to go to researchers, rather than try to lure them to us.
A COLLECTION GATHERING DUST…
BECOMING PART OF THE DIGITAL LANDSCAPE:
• Wikipedia
• Flikr
• Issuu
MAINTAINING AWARENESS OF MULTIPLE AUDIENCES
KEY POINTS:
• Emerging technologies allow us to meet researchers where they spend a great deal of time—online!
• The allow us to draw researchers to us
• They allow us to correct problematic research strategies
• They allow us to facilitate collaborative communities.
BUT WHAT ABOUT EMERGING HARDWARE TECHNOLOGIES?

CONFLUENCE IS KING!
SHORT TERM GOALS?
• Smartphones replace ID cards
• CardStar
• Key Ring
http://www.swissarmylibrarian.net/2011/02/08/scanning-library-cards-on-smartphones/
• QR codes will allow us to connect Syllabi with subject guides
LONG TERM GOALS
• Smartphones will allow us to go “meta”
• They will allow us to aggregate existing metadata
• Enhance user experience!
THANKS!
