The E-flat Concerto K. 449
is one of the most unusual and
inventive of the piano concertos.
It is full of sophisticated
counterpoint, especially in the
last movement, but as always with Mozart, all the learning is couched in the
most simple-seeming and elegant wrapping. In letters to his father, Mozart
prided himself on this ability to write for the musical connoisseur and the casual
listener without compromising quality, and this work is shining proof of his
special genius.

RALPH VAUGHAN WILLIAMSBorn in Down Ampney, Gloucestershire, October 12, 1872Died in London, August 26, 1958
Fantasia on a Theme by Thomas Tallis
It is altogether fitting that one of the
greatest composers of twentieth-century
England should have been inspired by one
of the greatest musicians of the English
Renaissance to write a Fantasia. Vaughan
Williams’s Fantasia on a Theme by Thomas
Tallis has become one of his most famous
works, and the one in which he first found
his true voice as a composer.
Vaughan Williams had been
commissioned to edit a new edition of the
English Hymnal, and in searching through
folk-song and English church collections,
he came across nine melodies by Thomas
Tallis (approx. 1505-1585) written for the
1567 English Psalter. The Psalter was used
for only a few years, then suppressed, but
the tunes were preserved. One of these
tunes, written in the Phrygian mode (the
sequence of white notes on the piano
from E to E), caught Vaughan Williams’s
interest. In June 1910, he completed his
Fantasia on this theme, and conducted the
London Symphony in the world premiere
on September 6 in Gloucester Cathedral.
The theme combines simplicity,
strength, mysticism, serenity, eloquence

The English Hymnal.
Mario Bernardi led the NAC Orchestra in their first performance of Ralph Vaughan Williams’s Fantasia on a Theme by Thomas Tallis in 1976, and the Orchestra’s most recent performance took place in 2011 under the direction of Hannu Lintu. They also performed this work on their 1992 tour of Western Canada, and will play it again this season on their UK Tour.
Its ecclesiastical
nature strongly suggests a cathedral
setting for performance, and Vaughan
Williams responded by developing the
Renaissance predilection for the sonorous
use of multiple choirs, slowly changing
harmonies, echo effects, spacious chords
and profound silences.
The scoring, for strings alone, is divided
into three groups: a solo string quartet, a
small orchestra of nine players (Orchestra
II) and a large massed body of strings
(Orchestra I). The composer requested
in the score that the two orchestras be
spaced far apart if at all possible, allowing
for most effective realization of a wide
variety of acoustical groupings and effects.
His wife Ursula Vaughan Williams wrote: “It
seemed that his early love for architecture
and his historical knowledge were so deeply
assimilated that they were translated and
absorbed into the texture and the line of
the music.”
The Fantasia opens quietly with a few
tentative fragments of the theme. This
theme makes its first full appearance in
the veiled colours of unison second violins,
violas and cellos of Orchestra I. The theme is
repeated in brighter colours and with richer
figuration. A passage of antiphonal effects
follows, derived from the opening page;
this eventually subsides, leading into the
next main section. A solo viola sings a more
rhythmically energetic melody, derived
from the second strain of the Tallis theme.
It is repeated by the solo violin, then taken
up by the solo quartet with interjections
sometimes from Orchestra I, sometimes
Orchestra II, sometimes both together. The
theme is fragmented and worked into music
of soaring, exalted visions, culminating in
an impassioned climax by the combined
forces in a sumptuous nine-part texture.
(Orchestre I).

voix.
musicales.

The effect of this music is such that, to John
Fuller-Maitland, “it seems to lift one into
some unknown region of musical thought
and feeling. Throughout its course one is
never quite sure whether one is listening
to something very old or very new.” In the
concluding passages, the music dies away
in the imagined space of a vast cathedral.

Piano Concerto No. 14 in E-flat major, K. 449
Nearly all of Mozart’s piano concertos were
written for his own use as soloist, but No.
14 is an exception. This was intended for
one of his star pupils, Barbara (Babette)
Ployer, daughter of a prosperous Viennese
financier. At the time, Mozart was just
reaching the height of fame and popularity
in Vienna, which he called “the land of the
piano.” In 1784 alone, he wrote no fewer
8 Follow the tour: NACOTOUR.ca
than six piano concertos, of which K. 449
is the first. These were followed by three
more in each of the following two years.
Since this concerto was written for
a student, the piano writing is not as
extroverted and difficult as in some of the
preceding works. Many listeners, in fact,
find a warmth and intimacy in this concerto
far greater than in its forerunners. Even
the key, E-flat major, suggested to some
of Mozart’s contemporaries thoughts of
night, love, devotion and solemnity, as
opposed to the concepts embodied in such
“public” keys as C and D. Despite its original
purpose, however, Mozart himself gave the
premiere performance at a benefit concert
on March 17, 1784. “It won extraordinary
applause,” he reported.
In a letter comparing K. 449 with its
three successors (K. 450, 451 and 453),
Mozart described it as being “in an entirely
different style and written more for a
small than a large orchestra.” Though it
is perfectly acceptable to perform K. 449
with a full string section, as is commonly
done, its intimate character and modest
orchestral forces (only pairs of oboes
and horns, in addition to strings) render
the concerto equally agreeable to being
heard within the context of a chamber
music program, either with or without the
four winds whose parts are almost always
doubled by the strings anyway. The same
principle applies to the three previous
concertos, K. 413, 414 and 415 (Nos. 11, 12
and 13), all of which were written with the
piano ».
Bon nombre d’auditeurs
ensemble ». Bien que le K. 449 se prête
parfaitement à une interprétation avec une
pleine section de cordes, comme cela se
fait communément, son caractère intime
et sa composition orchestrale modeste
(seules deux paires de hautbois ajoutées
aux cordes) rendent l’œuvre tout aussi
Mozart’s Piano Concerto No. 14 has been interpreted twice before by the NAC Orchestra, in 1978, with Anton Kuerti at the piano and Mario Bernardi on the podium, and in 2006, with Stephen Hough at the piano and Carlos Kalmar on the podium.

malice », tandis qu’Alfred Einstein l’a jugé
« d’une beauté troublée ». Philip Radcliffe
intention that amateur pianists without
access to a full orchestral ensemble might
also enjoy playing them at home with
whatever few string players might be on
hand.
Although K. 449 is one of the least-
known of Mozart’s mature piano concertos,
it has no lack of distinctive features. The
first movement is notable for its nearly
equal partnership between soloist and
orchestra, the latter’s role being far more
than mere “accompaniment.”
The Andantino boasts numerous
unusual modulations within a movement
that has been described by Cuthbert
Girdlestone as “calm and guileless” and
by Alfred Einstein as “troubled beauty.”
Philip Radcliffe finds that “beneath its
polished exterior there is a decided
undercurrent of restlessness that fits
well with the wayward and independent
character of the first movement.” This is
followed by one of Mozart’s most original
and ambitious movements to date, full of
contrapuntal textures, playful dialogues
and propelled by a memorable principal
theme. It is only a short step from here to
opera buffa, with real characters cavorting
about on the stage.

RICHARD STRAUSSBorn in Munich, June 11, 1864Died in Garmisch-Partenkirchen, September 8, 1949
Burleske in D minor for Piano and Orchestra
The Burleske is one of Strauss’s few pre-
Don Juan works to maintain a toehold
in the repertoire. It is also his only work
for solo piano and orchestra, despite the
composer’s outstanding ability at the
keyboard. To concertgoers who know
Strauss only through the tone poems
(Till Eulenspiegel, Don Juan, Also sprach
Zarathustra, etc.) or operas (Salome,
Elektra, Der Rosenkavalier, etc.), the
Burleske sounds remarkably unlike
Strauss and much more like a blend of
Brahmsian textures, Mendelssohnian
fluency and Lisztian virtuosity. Then there
is the classical form of the work, which
adheres closely to the sonata-allegro
principle in use since the days of Haydn
and Mozart – definitely not a feature of
Strauss’s better-known works. And what of
the timpani – four of them (highly unusual
in nineteenth-century music) – which rise
to the status of a second soloist and even
play tunes?
Strauss wrote the Burleske in 1885-
1886 at the age of 21. He had not yet
broken out of the mould into which he had
been cast by his arch-conservative father,
who saw to it that his son received only
the most proper and tradition-bound

(Till Eulenspiegel, Don Juan, Also sprach
Stephanie Sebastian was the soloist for the NAC Orchestra’s first performance of Richard Strauss’s Burleske, given in 1972 under the direction of Mario Bernardi. Kirill Kondrashin led the Orchestra’s most recent interpretation of this work in 1976, with Marek Jablonski at the piano.

A Ballad of Canada.
This work was co-commissioned by
the National Arts Centre Orchestra and
the Edmonton Symphony Orchestra
in celebration of the composer’s 75th
birthday. The world premiere was given by
the NAC Orchestra on June 9, 2011. The
25-minute work for chorus and orchestra
employs verses by four Canadian poets:
Ralph Gustafson, John McCrae, E.J. Pratt
and Carl Hare. The composer has written:
“The quiet and the vastness of Canada’s
far Northwest are celebrated in the opening
setting, “In the Yukon.” The Northern Lights
arch gloriously over the scene. The last
of the five movements, “Newfoundland,”
takes us to the eastern end of the country,
where the Atlantic meets the lonely and
grand shores of that province. Between
these two more expansive essays of “The
Land,” we turn to Canada in time of trial.
Two wars: the First World War (“In Flanders
Fields”) and the Afghanistan War of 2002,
which continues unabated [Forsyth writing
in 2011]. The Waverley Road Bridge spans
the “Highway of Heroes” in Ontario, where
The NAC Orchestra has performed Malcolm Forsyth’s A Ballad of Canada once before, when they gave the world premiere in 2011 under the direction of Pinchas Zukerman. The ensemble will perform the work again this fall in London, on their UK Tour.

a cortège passes, bearing the coffins of
fallen soldiers from that conflict. The
centrepiece of this set commemorates
a natural disaster all too common off the
rocky crags in the frozen Atlantic. In 1898,
the SS Greenland brought in the corpses
of 25 seamen to St. John’s, frozen on the
sea ice. In the finale (“Here the tides flow,
and here they ebb . . .”), the wildness of
Canada’s eastern shore is pictured. A final
crashing wave, a flickering of the Northern
Lights, and the music vanishes.”

sauvage de cette province. Entre ces
deux descriptions plus vastes du pays, on
évoque le Canada pendant les épreuves.
Deux guerres : la Première Guerre mondiale
(« Au champ d’honneur ») et la guerre
en Afghanistan qui continue de faire
rage depuis 2002 [écrivait Forsyth en
2011]. Sur le pont du chemin Waverley
qui enjambe ‘l’Autoroute des héros’
en Ontario, on assiste au passage
d’un cortège funèbre, celui de soldats
morts au cours de ce conflit. La partie
centrale de cette suite commémore une
catastrophe naturelle malheureusement
trop courante au large des côtes rocheuses
de Terre-Neuve, dans les eaux froides
de l’Atlantique. En 1898, Le navire SS
Greenland ramenait à St. John’s les
dépouilles de 25 marins morts en mer et
encore gelés. Le finale (‘Here the tides flow,
and here they ebb…’), dépeint le caractère

PART I: THE LAND
I In the Yukon (Ralph Gustafson, 1909-1995)Here all is a beginning. I saw a salmon jump, Again and again, against the current,The timbered hills a background, wooded green Unpushed through; the salmon jumped, silver. ...............at the end of the summerThe leap for dying. Moose came down to the water
edgeTo drink and the salmon turned silver arcs.At night, the northern lights played, great over
country..................They were green,....... And great grandeur, over the north.
PART II: CANADA IN TIME OF TRIAL II In Flanders Fields (John McCrae, 1872-1918)In Flanders fields the poppies blowBetween the crosses, row on row,That mark our place; and in the skyThe larks, still bravely singing, flyScarce heard amid the guns below.
We are the Dead. Short days agoWe lived, felt dawn, saw sunset glow, Loved, and were loved, and now we lie In Flanders fields!
Take up our quarrel with the foe: To you from failing hands we throwThe torch; be yours to hold it high,If ye break faith with us who dieWe shall not sleep, though poppies growIn Flanders fields.

III The Toll of the Bells (E. J. Pratt, 1882-1964)The ritual of the guns, and at the mastThe flag half-high, and as the cortege passed, All that remained by our dumb hearts unspoken. And what within the band’s low requiem fails Of final tribute, shall at altar-rails.........soon be offered them.
But neither trumpet-blast, nor the hoarse din Of guns, nor the drooped signals from those muteBanners, could find a language to saluteThe frozen bodies that the ship brought in.
IV On the Waverley Road Bridge (Carl Hare, 1932-)In the funeral convoyThe mother of the fallen soldier Waves up to us with delicate fingers Wrist etched in blackThe hand absent-minded in its griefHer son no longer in her armsAs mine is nowGazing up at me with wondering eyes. How could I bear such loss?Stay closer to me.
PART III: THE LAND V Newfoundland (E. J. Pratt, 1882-1964) Here the tides flow, and here they ebb,Not with that dull unsinewed tread of watersHeld under bonds to movearound unpeopled shores —Moon-driven through a timeless circuitOf invasion and retreat; But with a lusty stroke of lifePounding at stubborn gates,That they might runWithin the sluices of men’s hearts,And teach the sea’s strong voiceTo learn the harmonies of new floods.

Here the winds blow,And here they die,Not with that wild, exotic rageThat vainly sweeps untrodden shores, But with familiar breathHolding a partnership with life, Resonant with the hopes of spring.
Here the cragsMeet with winds and tides —Not with that blind interchangeOf blow for blowThat spills the thunder of insentient seas; But with the mind that reads assault, Stiffening the muscles of the waves.
Tide and wind and crag, Sea-weed and sea-shell And broken rudder — And the story is toldOf human veins and pulses,Of dreams that survive the night.

monde entier.
Intitulé IN PACE, le
programme soulignera le 100e anniversaire
du déclenchement de la Première Guerre
mondiale et comportera une nouvelle pièce
de Christopher Hossfeld.
Chef d’orchestre et compositeur
établi à Montréal, M. Hossfeld a dirigé des
formations chorales et instrumentales aux
États-Unis et au Canada, et préparé des
chœurs pour des programmes dirigés par
Trevor Pinnock et Michael Zaugg. Il travaille
actuellement avec la jeune compagnie
montréalaise Opera da Camera et avec le
collectif vocal One Equall Musick, qu’il a
fondé en 2011. Ses compositions ont été
interprétées un peu partout en Amérique
du Nord, notamment au Kennedy Center à
Washington et au Jordan Hall à Boston.

Ewashko SingersLaurence Ewashkodirector/chef de chœur
Formed in 1992 for a live broadcast marking
50 years of Radio Canada International, the
Ewashko Singers have developed into one
of the most flexible vocal ensembles in the
National Capital Region.
From Beethoven, Mahler and Verdi
to Richard Rodgers and Howard Shore,
they skilfully perform music across a wide
range of genres and languages. Highlights
this season include Christmas with a Twist,
featuring Jonathan Estabrooks, a special
Valentine’s Day concert with the renowned
Canadian Chamber Choir, and the Canadian
premiere of Roman Hurko’s Liturgy No. 3
(English) – The Divine Liturgy of St. John
Chrysostom. Next spring, they go on tour
to New York City to perform more works
by Roman Hurko, at the invitation of the
composer.
In addition to their own concert series,
the Ewashko Singers regularly combine
their vocal talent with other choirs for
performances with the National Arts
Centre Orchestra. In December they sing
Messiah, and next June they cap off a
long and fruitful partnership with Maestro
Pinchas Zuckerman, singing Beethoven’s
Ninth for him one last time.
figurent Christmas with a Twist, mettant en
vedette Jonathan Estabrooks, un concert
spécial de la Saint-Valentin avec le Chœur
de chambre du Canada, et la première
canadienne de Liturgy No. 3 – The Divine
Liturgy of St. John Chrysostom (en anglais)
œuvres à New York le printemps prochain.

The choir was recently featured in Brahms’s
Schicksalslied, Mozart’s Requiem, Those

Tobi Hunt McCoy is enjoying another year
as Season Stage Manager with the National
Arts Centre Orchestra. In past seasons, Ms.
McCoy co-produced (Canadian content)
the Pops show On the Air with Jack Everly,
and stage managed the Lord of the Rings
Symphony, Mendelssohn’s A Midsummer
Night’s Dream with Christopher Plummer,
and much of the NAC Orchestra’s
educational and Pops programming.
Additional professional duties have
included bracing the backstage doors
against the almighty power of Richard
Strauss, Yannick Nézet-Séguin and the
air conditioning system at Montreal’s La
Maison Symphonique, guest conducting
the NAC Orchestra in rehearsal for the
Black & White Opera Soiree, providing air-
guitar support during the Led Zeppelin
tribute concert, shepherding numerous
choruses to and from the rehearsal hall,
backstage lip-synching to the Classical
Mystery Tour’s Beatles Tribute, utilising
her creative Vancouver French with the
combined choral and orchestral forces in
Mahler’s Eighth Symphony, teaching the
company of Disco Days and Boogie Nights
how to curl, and duck wrangling for the
Mysterioso Pops concert.
She is excited to be back teaching
English and Drama at Lisgar Collegiate.
Pho
