Five Banks Hired toManage CIL Selloff

SINGAPORE Five Indian

investment banks in-

cluding ICICI Securities

and SBI Capital have been

hired to manage a 10% stake divest-

ment in state-owned Coal India (CIL),

IFR, a Thomson Reuters publication

reported on Thursday, citing two

sources close to the deal.Other banks

who have been hired to manage the

offering are Axis Capital, JM Fi-

nancial and Kotak Investment Bank-

ing, IFR, said. Eight banks including

HSBC had submitted bids for the deal.

theme for Indian banks, as asset-

and banks look to revive credit

GDP outlook,” Fitch said. “There will

be challenges for state-owned banks

in particular, given weak core capital-

isation and expectations of slow

earnings recovery due to high credit

costs,” it added. Public sector banks

require .̀ 2.40 lakh crore capital by

2018 to meet Basel III norms.

Mumbai: Shares of tile makerscould be under focus in the nextfew months as the revision in gaspricing contract between Qatar’sRasGas and Petronet LNG willbenefit these companies.

Tile manufacturers like KajariaCeramics, Prism Cement, Soma-ny Ceramics, Cera Sanitarywareand HSIL could be beneficiariesas power and fuel costs amount tonearly 30% of sales revenues ofthese companies, said analysts.

“Tile companies’ EBITDA(earnings before interest taxesdepreciation and amortisation)margin could expand by 400 bpswith the lower gas prices as therevision in contracts would imp-ly 30-40% reduction in price oflong term gas contracts for tilescompanies” said Samir Tul-shan, analyst, JM Financial.

JM Financial said shares of toptiles companies could return 20-45% in the next one year.

Gas pricing contract betweenRasGas and Petronet LNG willbe revised where the gas pricingformula would changed to three-month average price of a basketof Japanese crude oil prices asagainst five years currently.

These companies draw be-tween 30-50% of total gas re-quirement from long-term con-tracts. Price revision of thesecontracts could lead to EBITDAor operating profit margin ex-pansion by 100-400 basis points(1-4%). Shares of some of thetiles companies have rallied in

the last three months on expecta-tion that the Goods and Sales Tax(GST) would be passed in the win-ter session of the Parliament.

While shares of Kajaria and Nit-co shares surged over 30% in thelast one month as against theSensex gains of 1%, HSIL hasgained by 11% during this period.

GST could also be a gamechanger for the sector that hassizeable unorganised participa-tion and high taxation struc-ture, said analysts.

“GST is likely to address the in-

efficient competitive pressure anindirect tax framework has creat-ed by removing disparity in statelevel taxes and double taxation”said Vikas Mantri, analyst, ICICISecurities.

“GST, when implemented prop-erly, will create a level playingfield where unorganised playerswill not be able take advantage ofcash transactions.”

FDA-Beaten DRL: Buy or Sell?

NO IMMEDIATE SUCCOUR:Historically, stern FDA action has led to a setback on the bourses. Depending on the gravity of the action, stocks of Ipca Labs, Cadila Healthcare and Wockhardt have shown varying degrees of recovery after the initial correction, indicating that recovery could take months.

SOME RISKS ARE CALCULATED: Sun Pharma acquired Ranbaxy knowing well the regulatory quagmires that it was stuck in. Dr Reddy’s Labs launched the generic of the heart burn pill Nexium in purple colour, the same colour as the one sold by innovator AstraZeneca. These have been calculated risks, which may cost the companies in case they go awry. However, in a globalised pharma landscape, these are risks worth taking.

GOVERNANCE TO BE TESTED: As Indian pharma achieves scale through organic and inorganic expansion, they are likely to suffer hurdles like action from regulators, lawsuits and stiff competition. This is a transition phase as they work to match US standards while using Indian infrastructure, workforce and quality control. DRL will be tested on how it overcomes these impediments. It also means increase in legal and compliance costs.

CHANGE NEEDED IN INVESTOR PERCEPTION:Investors need to change the way they have traditionally viewed pharma stocks – from evergreen business stories to ones that are globally evolving in a competitive and regulatory environment. They have to brace themselves for uncertainty and volatility in these stocks.

PROSPECTS FOR DRL: A negative FDA action or lawsuit does not per se make DRL a bad stock. The company has a strong pipeline of drugs to be launched in the US and invests signifi cantly in R&D. Investors need to keep a close watch as warning letters have the potential to escalate into import bans. While majority of the analysts are bullish, the number of ‘buy’ calls have dipped 35% in three weeks. It is better to avoid DRL till there is a clear sign of FDA issue not escalating.

Spokespersons of the Anil Amba-ni-led Reliance Group told ET“there is no development”. Offi-cials on the French side told ET,on condition of anonymity, thatthe agreement between Rafaleand an Indian partner will be onthe lines of the 2012 agreementbetween the French companyand the Mukesh Ambani-led Re-liance Industries.

The NDA government had refor-matted the UPA government deal andordered 36 aircraft, instead of 126.

The Rafale fighter deal, whichwill bring in at least $4.5 billioninto ‘Make in India’ projects asper the contract being negotiat-ed, is set to involve a third produc-tion line for the aircraft in India,French officials have told ET.

While two lines for the fighterare currently active in France atthe same facility, a third line in In-dia would take care of export or-ders for the fighters and also pos-sible future orders by the IndianNavy and Air Force. The line

would also support the produc-tion of a low-cost variant of the‘Falcon’ executive jet for the Indi-an and Asian markets.

“It will not be possible to roll outany of the 36 fighters being ac-quired by India from the produc-tion line as it would take time toset up but future orders, includ-ing exports, will be fulfilled withthe new line,” a person involvedin the discussions has told ET.

“At most, the final painting of thelast ten aircraft to be delivered toIndia could be carried out at the In-dian assembly line. This itself is a

very high technology process asthe fighter has a special anti-radarcoat,” the person added.

Besides the joint production fa-cilities in India, the French sideis also set to transfer some keytechnologies to DRDO that wouldbenefit the Light Combat Air-craft (LCA) project. A completelist of the technology to be trans-ferred is being finalised butwould include several systems tomake the LCA more effective.

Technology to be transferred in-cludes the air intake system forthe fighter, an undercarriage for

the naval variant of the LCA, cut-ting edge radar absorbing paint-ing technology as well as an inte-grated production line softwareand management system for thefighter aircraft.

While the main Rafale contractis likely to be signed this finan-cial year, as was reported by ET, aseparate contract for armamentsystems will be signed at a laterdate with French companyMBDA. A partnership for trans-fer of technology and productioncould be inked with the DefenceResearch and Development Labo-ratory (DRDL) that specialises inadvanced armaments.

Engineer-General StephaneReb, Director of the Internation-al Directorate of the DGA (Gener-al Directorate for Armament) ofthe French Ministry of Defence isin New Delhi this week to finalisethe inter-governmental agree-ment draft that is likely to besigned before January 26 whenFrench President François Hol-lande will visit India as the ChiefGuest at the Republic Day Parade.
