Most merciful God, we confess that we are captive to sin and

cannot free ourselves. We have sinned against you in thought,

word, and deed, by what we have done and by what we have

left undone. We have not loved you with our whole heart; we

have not loved our neighbors as ourselves. For the sake of your

Son, Jesus Christ, have mercy on us. Forgive us, renew us, and

lead us, so that we may delight in your will and walk in your

ways, to the glory of your holy name. Amen.

APOSTLES CREED

I believe in God, the Father almighty,

creator of heaven and earth.

I believe in Jesus Christ, God's only Son, our Lord,

who was conceived by the Holy Spirit,

born of the virgin Mary,

suffered under Pontius Pilate,

was crucified, died, and was buried;

he descended to the dead.*

On the third day he rose again;

he ascended into heaven,

he is seated at the right hand of the Father,

and he will come to judge the living and the dead.

I believe in the Holy Spirit,

the holy catholic church,

the communion of saints,

the forgiveness of sins,

the resurrection of the body,

and the life everlasting. Amen.

*Or, "he descended into hell," another translation of this text in widespread use.

NICENE CREED We believe in one God,

the Father, the Almighty,

maker of heaven and earth,

of all that is, seen and unseen.

We believe in one Lord, Jesus Christ,

the only Son of God,

eternally begotten of the Father,

God from God, Light from Light,

true God from true God,

begotten, not made,

of one Being with the Father;

through him all things were made.

For us and for our salvation

he came down from heaven,

was incarnate of the Holy Spirit and the virgin Mary

Page 8: ELW = Evangelical Lutheran Worship WOV = With … = Evangelical Lutheran Worship WOV = With One Voice ... sin in the presence of God and of one another. ... We believe in one holy

Page 8

and became truly human.

For our sake he was crucified under Pontius Pilate;

he suffered death and was buried.

On the third day he rose again

in accordance with the scriptures;

he ascended into heaven

and is seated at the right hand of the Father.

He will come again in glory to judge the living and the dead,

and his kingdom will have no end.

We believe in the Holy Spirit, the Lord, the giver of life,

who proceeds from the Father and the Son,*

who with the Father and the Son is worshiped and glorified,

who has spoken through the prophets.

We believe in one holy catholic and apostolic church.

We acknowledge one baptism for the forgiveness of sins.

We look for the resurrection of the dead,

and the life of the world to come. Amen.

*Or, "who proceeds from the Father." The phrase "and the Son" is a later addition to the creed.

PRAYERS OF INTERCESSION Each portion of the prayer will end with these words:

…Lord in your mercy OR …let us pray OR …hear us, O God

Hear our prayer. Have mercy, your mercy

O God. Is great.

When the prayers conclude all say: Amen

PEACE The peace of Christ be with you always. And also with you.

The ministers and congregation may greet one another in the name of the Lord.

Peace be with you. Peace be with you.

THANKSGIVING AT THE TABLE (Seasonal) or may be

omitted

WORDS OF INSTITUTION

In the night in which he was betrayed, our Lord Jesus took bread,

and gave thanks; broke it, and gave it to his disciples, saying:

Take and eat; this is my body, given for you.

Do this for the remembrance of me.

Again, after supper, he took the cup, gave thanks, and gave it for

all to drink, saying: This cup is the new covenant in my blood,

shed for you and for all people for the forgiveness of sin.

Do this for the remembrance of me.

LORD'S PRAYER

Our Father, who art in heaven,

hallowed be thy name,

thy kingdom come,

thy will be done,

on earth as it is in heaven.

Give us this day our daily bread;

and forgive us our trespasses,

as we forgive those

who trespass against us;

and lead us not into temptation,

but deliver us from evil.

For thine is the kingdom,

and the power, and the glory,

forever and ever. Amen

Romans Chapter 12

I appeal to you therefore, brothers and sisters, by the mercies of God, to present

your bodies as a living sacrifice, holy and acceptable to God, which is your

spiritual worship. 2Do not be conformed to this world, but be transformed by the

renewing of your minds, so that you may discern what is the will of God — what is

good and acceptable and perfect. 3For by the grace given to me I say to everyone among you not to think of yourself

more highly than you ought to think, but to think with sober judgment, each

according to the measure of faith that God has assigned. 4For as in one body we

have many members, and not all the members have the same function, 5so we,

who are many, are one body in Christ, and individually we are members one of

another. 6We have gifts that differ according to the grace given to us: prophecy, in

proportion to faith; 7ministry, in ministering; the teacher, in teaching; 8the

exhorter, in exhortation; the giver, in generosity; the leader, in diligence; the

compassionate, in cheerfulness. 9Let love be genuine; hate what is evil, hold fast to what is good; 10love one another

with mutual affection; outdo one another in showing honor. 11Do not lag in zeal,

be ardent in spirit, serve the Lord. 12Rejoice in hope, be patient in suffering,

persevere in prayer. 13Contribute to the needs of the saints; extend hospitality to

strangers. 14Bless those who persecute you; bless and do not curse them. 15Rejoice with

those who rejoice, weep with those who weep. 16Live in harmony with one another;

do not be haughty, but associate with the lowly; do not claim to be wiser than you

are. 17Do not repay anyone evil for evil, but take thought for what is noble in the

sight of all. 18If it is possible, so far as it depends on you, live peaceably with all. 19Beloved, never avenge yourselves, but leave room for the wrath of God; for it is

written, "Vengeance is mine, I will repay, says the Lord." 20No, "if your enemies are

hungry, feed them; if they are thirsty, give them something to drink; for by doing

this you will heap burning coals on their heads." 21Do not be overcome by evil, but

overcome evil with good.
