Amy Desjardin, after no longer being able to host her Eas- ter egg hunts in Hilton Beach due to the pandemic, decided to start a new Christmas event that is both pandemic and family friend- ly and spanned almost the entire island. The St. Joseph Island Elf Hunt had 40 families participate in a week long search to spot the Elf on the Shelf hiding amongst the Christmas decorations in their yard. Even more people participated in the search which, although main- ly centered around Hilton Beach and Richards Landing, there were elf hous- es virtually every- where. We checked out a few ourselves, and were surprised how difficult some were. 10/10 hard on a couple, while others were quite easy. just to see the Christmas decorations.

Spreading holiday cheer and joy was what the event was about. Amy tells us “Many of the par-ticipants who hid the elves also sent wonderful messages about seeing the joy in the children’s faces when they spotted the elves.” Amy certain-ly spent a lot of time and effort organizing the event and creating the map, but she is very quick to mention “I want to make sure to give a proper recognition to everyone who participated in hid-ing the elves and donating prizes. They deserve the credit, without them, this event wouldn’t have succeeded.” John & Marlene Gibbs, Bill & Cheryl Batman, Chris & Cindy Hore (Tiltin’ Hilton), Judy Connell, Julie & Chris Comirand, Phil Hopper & Peggie Buchanan (Harmony School House), Tom & Lori Desjardin, Kir & Tom Young, Patricia Dumas, The Mackay-Coutu Fam-ily all donated to the prizes including a karaoke machine that was the last prize given out. While the prizes were for the children participating, Amy mentions many adults did sign up too and asked not to be included in the draws so that kids would win.

While personally the challenge was a little diffi-cult, this is why the event was a week long, with the elves being placed outside between 5-9pm the darkness made it even harder. Amy did say some changes will be made next year – so if you missed this year’s there’s always the future to look forward to. So don’t feel bad if you couldn’t spot them all.

It did make for some great Christmas light watch-ing, not only from the families who participated but others all over the island. Our pictures didn’t come out great in colour, they’re going to print even worse. If you haven’t been out to check out all the Christmas lights and displays on the island, you can still do that now even though the contest is over. 40 houses participated in the Elf Hunt,

From The St. Joseph & Area Food Bank

The volunteers and clients of the St. Joseph Island and area Foodbank wish to express their sincere thanks for all the monetary donations and food items received this year. Support of local businesses, churches, organizations, clubs, town-ships, local schools and by individual donors has enabled us to keep the Foodbank operating during this difficult year. Rising grocery bills, loss of a job, illness during the ongoing pandemic found many people and their families in need of extra support that we were able to provide in our small way.

We are so pleased that again this Christmas season we are able to give out gift bags filled with extra treats as well as a turkey or ham besides the regular food items.

The Foodbank is open every Wednesday 1-3 at Harmony-St. Mark’s United Church in Richards Landing. We continue to follow all the Covid regulations as required by Algoma Public Health so masking and physical distancing are strictly enforced.

Food donations may be dropped off during open-ing hours. Cheques made out to Harmony-St. Mark’s United Church with “Foodbank donation” in the memo line may be mailed to Harmony-St. Mark’s, PO Box 216, Richards Landing, ON, P0R 1J0. A tax receipt will then be issued.
