PBA wants books for food baskets The Arkansas Tech Agri Club is holding its annual Poinsettia Sale Thursday and Friday, Dec. 4-5, at the Tech greenhouse at Red Hill Farm from 8 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. each day. ATU Agri Club sells poinsettias embers of People for a Better Atkins have announced that the marshals for the Atkins Christmas Parade will be the Atkins Red Devils Team Choice: Jake Pack, Sawyer Shan- non, Cody Colburn and Colton Barton. Their chauffeurs will be Bro Price, Roy Pitts and Scott Daily. The parade, sponsored by PBA and Teen BPA, will be Monday, Dec. 8, starting at 6 p.m. The theme of the parade is “Silver Bells.” Cash prizes will be awarded the top three floats: 1st place $150, 2nd place $125 and 3rd place $100. There is no entry fee. All floats should be at the Catholic Hall at 5 p.m. to line up. No four-wheelers are allowed unless they are pull- ing an approved float. The parade will start at Catholic Hall, exit out to the right on Main Street, right on Church Street to Sexton Foods, left up to the nursing home. Participants may dispurse at the football field. Christmas in the Park The signs for Christmas in the Park in memory or in honor of loved ones are being prepared. The cost to order a new sign is $10 and the dead- line is Dec. 12. To repeat a sign from last year costs $5. The deadline to pay for a renewal is Dec. 15. Signs may be purchased at Elmo Haney Pharmacy or by calling David Lindsey at 641- 2647 or J. L. Austin at 641- 7225. Christmas baskets Preparations for the Christ- mas baskets are under way. Those wishing to apply to receive a basket should do so by Dec. 5. Applications may be picked up at the Atkins U. S. Post Office. The baskets will be given away Saturday, Dec. 13, start- ing about 8 a.m. Helpers should arrive at 7:30 a.m. Those wishing to help put the baskets together should go to the Atkins Riding Club building about 6 p.m. on Dec. 11 and 12. Pat Duvall does a lot of the planning and preparation for this event. FBLA and Beta Club students usually help make up the baskets along with 4-H members. Mary Cole is in charge of children’s books to go in the baskets. The baskets will also con- tain fresh poultry and many packaged foods, as well as toys. Old and new — Retiring Atkins Police Chief Charles Martin sits with incoming Chief Tim Whittenburg, who took office in Novemer. Martin will become chief deputy sheriff when Aaron Duvall takes office as county sheriff in January. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention of the U.S. Department of Health and Human services has issued a Water Fluori- dation Quality Award to the Atkins Water System for its “consistent and professional adjustment of water fluoride content to optimum level for oral health for 12 consistent months.” Fluoride is a “safe and effective method to prevent tooth decay, improving the oral health of community residents of all ages,” the award states. The award was sent to the city through Dr. Roy Bratton, local dentist. Water System receives quality award Waste Management has announced a large item collec- tion, planned for Monday, Dec. 8, for customers in the Atkins city limits. Customers are asked to place all items within 3 feet of the curb and have them out before 6 a.m. on Dec. 8. Items that will be accepted: Bedding and furniture and simi- lar large items. Items that will not be accepted: Tires; latex paint in liquid form (mix with kitty litter or dirt to make it solid); lead-based paint; anything pre- viously containing freon (air conditioners, freezers, refrig- erators); white goods such as washers, dryers, stoves, water heaters; crossties; anything in liquid form; pesticides; batter- ies; burn barrels that contain burned debris. Waste Management to hold large-item pickup in Atkins The Pope County Cattlemen’s Association will meet this Sat- urday, Dec. 6, at 6 p.m. at the Russellville First Assembly of God Church fellowship hall for its annual Christmas party. The meat and bread will be furnished by PCCA. Members are asked to bring potluck side dishes – vegetables, salads, etc. and/ or desserts. All members and their families are encouraged to attend. A visit from St. Nick is expected. The drawing for the PCCA Scholarship Fundraiser year- ling ½ Angus- ½ Fleckvieh Simmental heifer or $500 cash will be held at the meet- ing. PCCA holiday party features heifer prize The Russellville Wal-Mart was evacuated and closed for about an hour and 24 minutes around noon Monday after the 911 office received a bomb threat. Russellville police said the building was evacuated at about 12:30 p.m. and the store was reopened at 1:54 p.m. after the Pope County Sheriff’s canine unit failed to find any suspicious objects. The Russellville Police Department is investigating the source of the bomb threat, which is a Class A misdemeanor, with a penalty of up to a year in prison and a $1,000 fine.
