HOLY REDEEMER PARISH ELLWOOD CITY, PENNSYLVANIA

Support all Catholic Education: “Great Beginnings last a lifetime.”

This weekend we are celebrating Father’s Day and we will be thanking God for the gifts of our fathers. We will also be praying for those men who are fathers. May God grant them the graces they need to be faith filled men who strive to raise their families to the Lord. In the Scripture Lessons, that have been designated for our weekday worship, one verse from the Gospel of Matthew (5:20) reminded me of the splendid way St. Joseph influenced the Lord Jesus. In that verse, Jesus speaks a wisdom that reveals a deeply mature spirituality. “I tell you, unless your righteousness surpasses that of the scribes and Pharisees, you will not enter the kingdom of heaven.” Most hear this verse as a criticism of the scribes and Pharisees. The Bible tells us that Righteousness is one of the chief attributes of God. Its meaning concerns proper conduct. For example, in the Book of Job, we learn that Job is a person who is perfect in righteousness. So, a righteous person not only does the correct thing for other people but also follows the laws of God and the Church. In Luke 17:10, Jesus shares a similar lesson, “When you have done all that was commanded, say this, “’We are useless servants; for we have done only what was commanded of us.’” I really believe that Jesus learned this wisdom from St. Joseph. When Mary was found with child, the Law of God commanded that such women be stoned to death. As Joseph fell asleep praying to God, he received grace filled insight to go beyond the Law for the sake of righteousness. The Ten Commandments and the teachings of the Lord Jesus are only starting points. Like Joseph, we must go from daily life to the Word of God, and from the Word of God back into daily life. As we pray about ways that our Lord’s words can be the beginning of a deeper experience of Christian living, we are invited to reflect on how St. Joseph lived by the Word of God. More specifically, how living faithfully led him to go beyond the letter of the Law, for the sake of righteousness and to please God. Fathers like St. Joseph teach lessons that bring their families to God. May God Bless you. Happy Father’s Day.

A Prayer for Fathers

God our Father, we give you thanks and praise for fathers young and old. We pray for young fathers, newly embracing their vocation; May they find the courage and perseverance to

balance work, family and faith in joy and sacrifice. We pray for our own fathers who have supported and challenged us; May they continue to lead in strong and gentle ways. We remember fathers around the world whose children are lost or suffering; May they know that the God of compassion walks with them in their sorrow. We pray for men who are not fathers but still mentor and guide us with fatherly love and advice. We remember fathers, grandfathers, and great-grandfathers who are no longer with us but who live forever in our memory and nourish us with their love. AMEN

REMEMBER LORD and welcome into your kingdom those who have died, especially Gustave “Hutch” Tetmire and Nick Patsy Rocco. May their souls and all the souls of the faithful departed, Rest in Peace. Amen. Please pray for the consolation of those who mourn.

The Army of the Lord

A man was coming out of church one Easter morning, and the pastor was standing at the door as always to shake hands. He grabbed the man by the hand and pulled him aside. The pastor said to him, “Son, we need you to join the Army of the Lord!” The man replied, “I’m already in the Army of the Lord, Father.” “Then how come I don’t see you except at Christmas and Easter?” the pastor questioned. He whispered back, “I’m in the secret service.”

EVERYDAY STEWARDSHIP - RECOGNIZE GOD IN YOUR ORDINARY MOMENTS

Will You Say Yes? You find yourself in the difficult situation of being accused of blasphemy and confronting possible execution. Your crime is believing in Jesus Christ. The question is then asked of you, “Are you a Christian, a follower of the one named Jesus Christ?” Your answer may very well dictate what happens to you next. What is your answer? It is probably easier to answer this question when the scenario is make-believe. All of us want to believe that we would say yes to the question of belief in Jesus, but strange things happen when humans panic in the face

of extreme stress. As we reflect on what we would say, there are those all over the world who are being asked that very same question. It is a question that was asked of many in the first centuries of the Church. Those who respond “yes” are considered martyrs and saints. We might not usually think of all this in terms of good stewardship living. However, our faith is also a gift we have received from God to cultivate, grow, and share with others. The more interesting question than the one posed above is, “Would an accuser even think of asking you such a question?” Would you have cultivated, grown, and shared your faith enough that anyone would even consider you worthy of asking the question? They might assume you don’t know Jesus Christ at all. I don’t like conflict and do not seek out conflict, but I would rather someone ask the first question posed than assume there is no reason to confront me in the first place. — Tracy Earl Welliver, MTS
