Ellis / Fodel Genealogy

The Ellis/Fodel legacy originated in Hardine, Lebanon with the Shehwen (Ellis), Deeb, and Fodelfamilies. The Shehwen name has been identified in a Families of Hardine document found on theinternet.

These families were Maronites. In 1860, the Hardine Maronites were plundered and massacred byDruze Moslems. As a result of persecution, emigration to the US began in 1886. The largestpopulation of Hardine immigrants settled in Wilkes-Barre, PA.

Marian George and John Moses Deeb lived and died in Hardine, Lebanon. Their children included Julia,

Josephine. Paul Deeb died at age 19 in the sinking of the Titanic on April 15, 1912 along with 11 other

Hardine, Lebanon citizens. David, the youngest, drowned in Sydney, Australia about 1934.

Elias and Marian Sarkis (from the town of Aitneet, Lebanon) Fodel lived and died in Hardine, Lebanon.

They had 5 children - Abdoo Elias Fodel, twin brothers, and 2 sisters - Kareema, and Zakea.

Abdoo received an advanced education in Lebanon and spoke Arabic and French fluently. He

immigrated to the US through Canada and Michigan in 1913.

It is reported that the original family name is phonetically pronounced “Foytha”. Due to language

differences and accents, the name was recorded as Fodel when Abdoo immigrated to the US.

Abdoo worked in a restaurant in Detroit, MI and eventually arrived in Wilkes-Barre, PA after spending

some time in Pittsburgh, PA.

George Leo Shehwen was born on June 20, 1870 in Hardine, Lebanon. He changed his name to

Ellis when he immigrated to the US around 1900. George’s first wife Susanne died in a fire. George

and Susanne had one daughter – Anna Shehwen, born May 28, 1893 in Hardine, Lebanon. Anna

was raised by the grandmother Shehwen (George’s Grandmother).

Julia John Deeb was born in Hardine, Lebanon on August 6, 1884. It is believed she immigrated to

the US around 1900.

George and Julia knew each other in Lebanon, but it is not known if they immigrated together.

They were married in Wilkes-Barre, PA October 29, 1903. Their children: Emmaline, Mary,

Frances, Rosemary, Leo, and Paul. They also had a son and a daughter who died at birth.

George passed on January 31, 1926. At the time of Julia’s death on February 17, 1966, she was

survived by 32 grandchildren, 37 great-grandchildren, and 2 great-great grandchildren

Julia and George are interred in St. Mary's Cemetery - Hanover Township, PA. The Ellis and

Shehwen surnames appear on the tombstone.

Emmaline Veronica Ellis was born on August 4, 1904 in Wilkes-Barre, PA. She was also named

Kamalai (this was her paternal grandmother’s name).

Abdoo Elias Fodel was born in Hardin, Lebanon on May 19, 1894. He immigrated to the US through

Canada and Michigan in 1913. He and Emmaline married on August 16, 1923 at St. George Maronite

Church in Wilkes-Barre, PA and later moved to Blakeslee, PA in 1924, Wilkes-Barre, PA in 1941, and

Baltimore, MD in 1943.

Emmaline was active as a volunteer in the Catholic church throughout her adult life. First in the

Pocono area and later at Our Lady of Fatima in Baltimore. Emmaline was also active in the Moose

and the Navy Mothers’.

Abdoo passed on January 6, 1966 and Emmaline passed on May 31, 1990. They are both interred in

the Gardens of Faith Cemetery in Baltimore County, MD.

Their children include Leo, Marian, Jackie, George, Abdoo (Junior), Frederick, Ronald, David.

Allen Russell Gerhardt (Rusty) was born on August 13, 1950 in Baltimore, MD. He attended Parkville HS,

then Clemson University, SC where he earned a BA degree in 1972.

At Clemson, Rusty received various awards including NCAA Baseball All American, 4 time All Atlantic

Coast Conference Pitcher, Atlantic Coast Conference All Time 50th Anniversary Team, and the National

Baseball Congress Player of the Year (Wichita, KS). He was inducted in the Clemson Athletic Hall of

Fame.

In 1974, Rusty signed a professional contract with the San Diego Padres and pitched for 8 seasons.

Afterwards, he held the position of Player Development Field Manager with the Padres. He then moved

on to Pitching Instructor with the Texas Rangers. In 1989, Rusty joined the Major League Baseball

Scouting Bureau as North Texas Area Scout. He is currently in that position and has been an instructor

at the MLB Scout Development School since 1999.

George Ellis Fodel was born on August 5, 1930. Naming him George caused controversy in the Ellis family

due to the fact that the grandfather’s name, by family tradition, was reserved for the first son of the eldest

son. Despite all this, the eldest son (Leo) did name his first son after his father (George Ellis).

George served in the US Navy from 1948 – 1952 then married Marie Cecelia Sroka on January 6, 1952. Their

children include George Francis (Butch), Deborah Marie, Karen Cecilia, Jeffrey Michael, and Brian

George.

George was an ironworker by trade and a lifelong member of Ironworkers Local Union #16 in Baltimore,

MD. He retired in 1995.

Marie passed on February 25, 2009 and is interred at St. Stanislaus cemetery. George passed on April 28,

2009 and is interred at St. Stanislaus cemetery.

for many years as a bookkeeper in the garment industry

Mary was a life member of the St. George Maronite Catholic Church on Loomis St. in Wilkes-Barre. She

was also the organist at the St. Theresa Novena and active in church functions for 72 years. She was a

member of the altar and rosary society and the recipient of the Massabki medal.

Mary passed on March 25, 1999 and is interred in St. Mary's Cemetery - Hanover Township, PA.
